Denizen 1998 (市民1998[1] Shimin 1998?, lit. "Citizen 1998"), also known as New Yoke City Big the Cat, is a character that appears in the animated series Sonic Prime. He is an alternate version of Big the Cat from the world of New Yoke City who part of a Resistance to help fight the forces of the Chaos Council.

Appearance[]

Denizen 1998 is a doppelgänger of his mainstream counterpart, albeit with some notable differences. As such, he is a very large and burly anthropomorphic cat with the majority of his body covered in purple fur with dark violet stripes running up his arms and long tail with the end frayed. Denizen 1998 has extra tufts of fur on his ears and cheeks. His attire consists of an amber patrol cap, a tattered tan ringer tee with amber highlights on the collar and pocket, and a pair of brown overalls with a broken left strap, with an amber cloth tied around his waist. He also wears amber gloves and black steel-toed sandals, each adorned with black and yellow hazard stripes. Additionally, a white egg logo can be seen on his cap and shirt pocket.

Denizen 1998 lived a peaceful life in Green Hill until it was invaded and destroyed by Eggforcers. The remains were paved over by the Chaos Council, transforming the forest into a totalitarian cityscape under their rule.

When he first entered New Yoke City, Sonic the Hedgehog initially mistook Denizen 1998 for Big the Cat. After Sonic inadvertently alerted patrolling Eggforcers, Denizen 1998 quickly fled. Soon after, a Security Drone interrogated Denizen 1998 about the incident before the city was struck by a sudden power outage. Due to the machines not working anymore, Denizen started to hit them, realizing he enjoyed it. One day while fishing, he spotted Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks being thrown out of the city's capital and carried them to safety, joining the Resistance in their fight against the Chaos Council. During the big battle in the city streets, Denizen helped the Resistance shooting robots with a gun.

Season two[]

Now as a part of the Resistance, Denizen accompanies Sonic, Rebel and Knucks in their mission. He shows he knows how to fight, doing so with his body and using guns.

When Nine rotates the city after the Shatterspaces starts to collapse, Denizen is seen hanging for his life. Sonic fails to save him, but luckily for him, Prim makes it in time. He is confused when he meets Hangry. Denizen is later seen at the Yoke, where he shelters from the chaos along with everyone else. He and Froggy follow the Resistance to the Grim to assist Sonic in the battle against Nine. Like all his other counterparts, he is not very strong in battle, but tries to help. He gets really scared when Nine creates Grim Big, a giant war machine. He hides and doesn't even try to fight it. When the battle is finally over, Denizen and the others break into Nine's lab to face him one last time.

Personality[]

Denizen 1998 is a quiet person who initially preferred keeping out of trouble, being uncomfortable when a displaced Sonic hugged him upon confusing him for his mainstream counterpart. When not under surveillance, however, Denizen 1998 is kind, helping strangers in need without hesitation. After joining the Resistance, Denizen 1998 began openly standing up against the Chaos Council and their machines.

Much like his mainstream counterpart, Denizen 1998 enjoys fishing and cares for his Froggy.

Powers and abilities[]

Denizen 1998 has some strength to pull down a security drone and lifting an average Eggforcer. He is also handy with laser guns like one the Jumbo Eggforcer's laser cannons.

  • Denizen 1998's name is a reference to original Japanese release date of Sonic Adventure, the game in which Big made his first appearance.
