The Death Egg Robot (デスエッグロボ Desu Eggu Robo?) is the first boss in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. In this stage, Classic Sonic fights the Death Egg Robot thus making the fight a callback to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Gameplay[]

The battle is split into two phases; the first phase requires Sonic to get behind the Death Egg Robot to hit its unarmored posterior as they ride up an elevator. The Death Egg Robot's pattern in the first phase can be summarized as follows:

  • Firstly, the Death Egg Robot moves forwards by a couple of steps and take aim at Sonic, which is signified by a red target reticle following Sonic. After a short while, the Death Egg Robot will launch its arm.
  • Afterwards, the Death Egg Robot will jump forwards in a short distance.
  • If the player is behind the Death Egg Robot, it will jump vertically while turning around to face the player, then (or otherwise) it will repeat its attack pattern.

As such, whenever the Death Egg Robot jumps, it is the player's opportunity to get behind the robot and use Sonic's Spin Jump to hit its unarmored posterior, which is the only way to progress this fight. After the Death Egg Robot is hit twice, the fight proceeds to the second phase where the elevator finally reaches its destination into a new room of the Death Egg. The Death Egg Robot will jump once more, then upon landing, it will launch Sonic into the outer platforming area in the foreground.

As with the first phase, the Death Egg Robot will attempt to aim its arm at Sonic before launching it. The arm will also destroy platforms, if aimed while Sonic is standing on them. To progress through the fight, the player must have Sonic step on a switch to make a nearby Dimensional Bomb spawn, then trick the Death Egg Robot into punching the said explosive, which will temporarily immobilize the arm long enough for Sonic to run or jump up onto the arm and attack the robot's head. Hitting the Death Egg Robot two more times (a total of four times) will finally defeat it.

Hard mode[]

On Hard mode, the Death Egg Robot is much faster at shooting its arms at Sonic and must be hit four times whilst on the elevator as opposed to two. In the second phase, there are fewer bombs and all the switches are placed on platforms above the bombs, making it harder to get close to them without setting them off. This time, it takes a total of six hits to defeat the Death Egg Robot.

Ranking[]

The following are the suggested clear times for achieving a high enough score to achieve each Rank. Maximum time that can be buffered by Ring Bonus are listed as well. To get an S-Rank, the player must achieve a high enough score for A-Rank, along with a Perfect Bonus by clearing the stage without retrying.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first boss fight in Sonic Generations to appear in any trailer, but not the first to be announced officially. This honor goes to Big Arm, a boss in the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.
  • This is the only boss in the game that was originally fought by Sonic in his normal form, as Perfect Chaos was fought by Super Sonic and Egg Dragoon was fought by the Werehog.
  • In the original battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and redone in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, after Sonic destroyed the Death Egg Robot the space station started to explode. However, the Death Egg does not begin to explode after Classic Sonic defeated the mech in Sonic Generations.
  • In a pre-release video, it is also called the "Death Egg Walker."[1] It is unknown if this was considered as an official term, or if the person doing the overview came up with the name on the spot.
  • This suit is notably larger than either of its two predecessors. Also, rather than firing its arms, it extends them.
  • The player is able to beat the boss without needing to be sent to the second phase. After reaching to the bomb area, the player needs to perform a Spin Dash underneath the boss' feet. Upon being crushed, the player will be sent sideways. Depending on which direction the boss is facing, the player can go behind and hit it.
  • The background score of the fight itself is an orchestral rendition of the original boss fight music from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with a tinge of bass guitar which chimes in, when the second phase begins.
