The Dead Ends take the form of gray tombstones with bats circling round it.
In gameplay, the Dead End can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Reaper Metal Sonic. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Dead End if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned users.
When used, a tombstone will be dropped some distance ahead of the user's current location and in front of the player currently in front of them. If the user is in first place however, the Dead End will drop down behind the user. Touching a Dead End with a playable character (including the user) will cause them to freeze instantly. Frozen opponents are unable to jump, slide, use their items or change path. This effect will last for a short amount of time or until the player gets hit by an obstacle or falls into a bottomless pit. The Dead Ends can be upgraded for each individual user by leveling them to levels 4, 10 and 16, increasing the chance of picking up three Dead Ends and the duration a hit character stays frozen.
To avoid Dead Ends, the player must either jump over them or run on an opposite lane to them.
