All right then! Let's test 'em out! — Dark Sonic

Template:Character (Sonic X) Dark Sonic (ダーク・ソニック, Dāku Sonikku^?) is Sonic's darker form. His first appearance was in the 67th episode of the TV show Sonic X when he sees Cosmo scared and Chris is injured by Black Narcissus of the Metarex. Sonic uses his anger to achieve this state, and possibly the energy from the hundreds of fake Chaos Emeralds around him. While in this state, Sonic shows his fury by destroying the two prototype Metarex that Black Narcissus pits against him in order to test his strength and speed.

Appearance and colors

Sonic achieved this form by channeling his rage and anger from seeing Chris passed out, and Cosmo being scared. As such, "Dark Sonic" is completely consumed by it. He quickly destroys both of the machines the Metarex were using to test Sonic and takes a sadistic pleasure in doing so (indicated by his mad cackling and evil grin). Sonic powers down when he is calmed by Doctor Eggman who says Sonic normally acts much better and more positive than this.

The events leading to Sonic's transformation into Dark Sonic are paralleled in Sonic and the Secret Rings, resulting in Sonic becoming the extremely similar Darkspine Sonic, but more darker like dark-blue.

Theories

thumb|left|300px It is presumed that Sonic also absorbed the energy of the fake Chaos Emeralds he was previously knocked into on the Metarex ship, giving him the power to transform into Dark Sonic. The fake emeralds are later destroyed and Dark Sonic is never seen again, lending credence to the theory. Conversely, this is the only time in the series where Sonic expresses genuine rage, so it is unknown whether or not the Fake Emeralds acted as a catalyst to his transformation or if he accomplished it through pure rage. Another theory is that Sonic absorbed the negative energies of the Chaos Emeralds rather than the usual positive energy (similar to how Chaos became Perfect Chaos due to absorbing the negative energies).

Powers and Abilities

Dark Sonic looks similar to Super Sonic except he has a bluish-black color, a blue aura, and no pupils or eye color when he is at maximum power. He demonstrates incredible speed, as he tears through a robot multiple times, simply by dashing through it, while appearing only as a blur (though this could just be him ripping through it with his fists). He also has super strength as he makes dents in metal, and also caves in a robot's face with one punch (it's unknown what kind of metal the robot was made of). It's possible that he also had augmented Dark Powers, as he disappeared several times in his battle with the Metarex, and reappeared right behind them, but this could also be due to him traveling at lightspeed.

Trivia

• Some fans refer to Dark Sonic as "Dark Super Sonic" (because his appearance resembles Super Sonic at some points) but Dark Sonic is more commonly heard. SEGA has not given any official name for this transformation
• Right when Sonic turns Dark, his voice seems to get a bit lower.
• This is the only time Dark Sonic is seen in action. A possible reason for this is the huge amount of effort to get Sonic angry.
• Dark Sonic and Darkspine Sonic are similar in that they are both Super transformations that were provoked by negative emotions and their very look is similar.
• Dark Sonic is very popular in fan-made media.
• Although Eggman said that he has "never seen you (Sonic) this angry before". He did not seem to be surprised by or afraid of the transformation.
• One of Sonic's alternate costumes in Super Smash Bros. Brawl has a strong resemblance of Dark Sonic.
• When Dark Sonic shows his face for the first time, it sounds like the Sonic X theme for Shadow the Hedgehog plays shortly before Dark Sonic takes off into battle.
