The Dark Legion Complex[1], also known as the Dark Legion Base[2], or Chrome Gadget[note 1], is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a destroyed complex on Angel Island, formerly used as a hidden fortress for the Dark Legion.

Description[]

DLcomplex1

The original appearance of the Dark Legion Complex, from Knuckles the Echidna #3.

In its original appearance, the Dark Legion Complex had the external design of a dome-shaped bunker, disguised to look like a grassy hill on Angel Island. Through use of a long metal beam, the fake hill could be raised off of the island to become a tower, at the cost of its disguise. On its interior, this version of the Complex featured a hanger bay for saucers and tanks, a great hall with a theater-like appearance, three "alpha chutes" for emergency exit, and another emergency exit composed of a ladder and a hatch to the outside world.[3]

When Julie-Su returned to the base after its destruction, its ruins curiously appeared entirely different from its previous design. Instead of being a disguised metal dome, this version of the complex resembled a ruined fortress, adorned with statues resembling Enerjak. On its interior, it featured barracks for the legionnaires, a command center, and an armory, all connected by a network of tunnels.[4]

History[]

Past[]

The Dark Legion Complex (along with several other unnamed structures on the Angel Island) were built "long ago" by Moritori Rex to serve as hidden bases whenever the Dark Legion needed them. As the years passed, the Complex and the other bases were secretly be maintained by Moritori, who was masking his involvement by posing as the Guardian Tobor during those periods.[5][6]

Some time later, the Dark Legion (then under the control of Grandmaster Kragok and Kommisar Lien-Da) seemingly escaped the Twilight Cage, and regrouped at the complex for planning. Julie-Su was also brought to the base at this time, albeit under heavy surveillance from Kragok and Lien-Da. Julie-Su and the Legion spent several days at the complex, but were apparently pulled back to the Twilight Cage after a while.[4][note 2]

Modern usage and destruction[]

During another Dark Legion invasion of the island, Kragok once again rallied his soldiers and Mechanauts to the Dark Legion Complex, using it as a hangar for the Legion's vehicles, and a venue to announce his plans to his troops. One soldier called to the complex was Julie-Su, who received a taser from the base's armory, shortly before the base was infiltrated by the disguised Chaotix. When Kragok attempted to hold a speech at the complex's great hall, the Chaotix revealed themselves, with Knuckles battling Kragok himself while the other members pushed back the surrounding legionnaires. With secret help from Locke, the Chaotix were able to overcome their opponents, while Kragok was defeated, and fled the base. Before leaving, however, Kragok activated the complex's self-destruct sequence, paranoid that Knuckles might discover his plans. With the base slowly collapsing, Knuckles and the Chaotix rushed to escape, but on his way out, Knuckles was noticed by the legionnaire Julie-Su. Julie-Su attempted to pursue Knuckles, but was forced to give up in order to escape before the base exploded.[3][7]

Abandonment[]

Later, the elderly ex-legionnaire Simon visited the ruins of the complex, hoping to find evidence of Julie-Su. At the same time, Julie-Su herself visited the ruins to investigate, and encountered Simon. Surprised to see Julie-Su again, Simon explained that he and his wife Floren-Ca had served has her surrogate parents in the Legion, before her step-siblings Kragok and Lien-da had her memory erased out of spite. Despite being initially wary, Julie-Su listened to Simon's story, and eventually came to believe his testimony.[4]

After the mysterious disappearance of Simon, Knuckles led the Julie-Su, Vector, Espio, and Mighty back to the ruins, suspecting the Dark Legion was using it as a hideout. His suspicions were confirmed when the group was ambushed by a troop of legionnaires in a lower level of the ruins. While one group of the legionnaires kidnapped Julie-Su and fled the ruined Complex in a saucer, the other group directly engaged the remaining Chaotix members in combat, stalling them. The battle was interrupted, however, when the faraway Dark Legion Battle Cruiser fired the Quantum Beam at the island, enveloping a large portion of it, and teleporting Vector, Espio, and Mighty to the Twilight Cage. Knuckles, however, managed to escape the teleportation effects of the blast by operating on his gut instinct and jumping out of the ruins just in time. Despite this, the blast still threw Knuckles off of the island and into the ocean, where he lay unconscious, floating on top of a metal slab that had once been an entrance sign for the Complex.[8]

Knuckles later returned to the ruined Complex as Chaos Knuckles, when he unknowingly used his powers to travel back in time to only a few moments before the Quantum Beam's impact. As such, when Knuckles entered the facility, he encountered the same legionnaires capturing Julie-Su, and even briefly caught a glimpse of his past version around the corner. However, Knuckles was soon met by the spirit of Hawking, who explained the situation to him, and transported him back to the ruined Haven in the present before Knuckles could change the past.[9]

When Chaos Knuckles later used his Chaos energy powers to undo the effects of the Quantum Beam, Vector, Espio, and Mighty were teleported outside the Complex, while the Dark Legionnaires they had been fighting were nowhere to be found.[10]

Trivia[]

  • In its design from Sonic Super Special #11 onward, the Dark Legion Complex features statues that appear to illustrate Dimitri in his Enerjak persona. This introduces a plot hole, however, as the Dark Legion was not aware that Dimitri was Enerjak until after the complex had been damaged and abandoned.
    • However, according to Dimitri's data file in Sonic the Hedgehog #105, Enerjak's armor is a warrior uniform worn by ancient echidna generals. As such, it is possible that the statues actually depict said armored generals instead of Enerjak.[11]

Notes[]

  1. In Sonic Super Digest #2, a map of Angel Island is present which uses alternate names for many of the locations on it, likely created as placeholders due to legal issues regarding the original names.
  2. In Sonic Super Special #11, Julie-Su claims she had served several days with the Dark Legion at the Dark Legion Complex, while also claiming that it was the same complex Knuckles and Kragok fought at. This creates a continuity error, because not a single day passes between Kragok's return to the island in Knuckles the Echidna #1 and the Complex's destruction in Knuckles the Echidna #3. As such, this implies that Julie-Su and the Dark Legion as a whole had been at the Complex on an earlier occasion.
