Launch a ball of dark energy ahead of you to zap rivals. Stay in its trail for a boost of speed!

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Dark Blast is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

The Dark Blast's icon takes the form of a purple energy ball fired from the palm of the Werehog. In gameplay, this power-up becomes a purple energy ball that the Werehog fires from his hand with a slashing motion. In addition, it leaves a purple energy trail that has three thin and bright lines running along it.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Dark Blast can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by the Werehog. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Dark Blast if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Dark Blast by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. In addition, when obtaining the Dark Blast, there is a chance of obtaining up to two Dark Blasts to use in the Projectile Item slot on the HUD from a single Item Box. When used, the user sets loose the Dark Blast's shot, which will travel down the lane it was deployed on in front of the user until it wears off. While moving forward, the Dark Blast will pass through any rival or obstacle. In addition, if the user of this power-up stays in its trail while it is active, they will receive a boost in speed; when the Werehog receives this effect, he will run on all fours. Also, rival characters that make contact with the Dark Blast will take damage, causing them to lose Rings, stop moving for a moment, and lose a random item they currently have. To avoid the Dark Blast, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or jump over it.

The Dark Blast can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6, 12 and 18 respectively. For each upgrade, the Dark Blast will cause more damage.
