Dango[note 1][note 2] is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are pillbug-type Badniks created by Dr. Eggman.
Appearance
Dangos are based on the Armadillidiidae family of crustaceans, more commonly known as pill bugs. They have got protecting armor on their back, white eyes and small mechanical legs. Dangos come in two color schemes in each of the two Rounds they appear in. Green variations appear in Stardust Speedway, whereas orange-brown ones appear in Metallic Madness.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog CD
In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the Dangos appear Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness as enemies. They are normally crawling slowly along the ground, but when they see the playable character, they will curl into a ball and roll towards the character to damage him, similar to the Spin Attack. While curled up, the Dangos are invincible, and attacking the rolling Dangos head-on with the Spin Attack will only repel them upon impact without damaging them. Dangos can be defeated with a Spin Jump while they are in crawling position though.
The brown Dangos in Metallic Madness appear aged and broken down in the Round's Bad Future and they roll much slower. However, the green Dangos in Stardust Speedway have not aged in that Round's Bad Future. Like every Badnik in the game, they are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them when they are defeated.
Sonic Mania
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Dangos reappear as enemies. Excluding their color schemes, they look exactly like their pristine versions in their debut game. In these games, they are encountered in Stardust Speedway Zone Act 1 and 2. Their behavior in gameplay are likewise consistent with that featured in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, which includes then crawling along the ground and curling up into a speedy roll (which a Spin Attack can repel) when a target is close.
In Stardust Speedway Zone Act 1, which takes place in the Past timeframe, Dangos have a purple color scheme. This changes to the regular green color scheme Stardust Speedway Zone Act 2, which takes place in the Present timeframe. Also, upon destroying a Dango in this game, it will release an Animal.
The green variant also appears after the Metal Sonic fight in Stardust Speedway Zone Act 2 of Sonic Mania Plus, knocking the Phantom Ruby away before the player can grab it and jumping triumphantly before rolling away.
Powers and abilities
The Dangos have the ability to assume spherical forms to roll over opponents with, similar to the Spin Attack. While in this form, they possess an absolute defense.
Trivia
- "Dango" is short for "dangomushi" (ダンゴムシ?), the Japanese word for "pill bug".
- The Dango appears to use the same concept as the Roller. The only real difference is that they are invincible when in its ball form, while the Roller is easily destroyed.
Notes
- ↑ While not listed in any instruction manuals, in-game source code from the Sonic Gems Collection version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD refers to this Badnik as "dango".
- ↑ The PC version of Sonic Mania listed the enemy as "Dango" according to the internal files of the game.
