The Dango[1][note 1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, pillbug-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.
Appearance[]
The Dangos are Badniks based on the Armadillidiidae family of crustaceans, more commonly known as the pillbug. They have protecting armor on their back, white eyes and two pairs of small mechanical legs. The Dangos also come in two color schemes in each of the two areas they appear in, with green variations appearing in Stardust Speedway, and orange-brown variations appearing in Metallic Madness. Additionally, in Sonic Mania, there is a pinkish variant that can also be found in Stardust Speedway Zone alongside the green Dangos.
Game appearances[]
Sonic the Hedgehog CD[]
In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the Dangos appear as enemies in Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness, with green ones appearing in the former Round while the brown ones appear in the latter Round.
In gameplay, the Dangos normally crawl slowly left and right along the ground. When they see the player however, they will curl into a ball and roll towards them in an attempt to damage them, similar to the Spin Attack. While curled up, the Dangos are invulnerable, and attacking the rolling Dangos head-on with the Spin Attack will only bounce them backwards upon impact without damaging them. Regardless, the Dangos can easily be defeated with a Spin Jump, Spin Attack or Spin Dash while they are in their crawling positions.
The brown Dangos in Metallic Madness appear aged and broken down in the Round's Bad Future, possessing cracked armor. In addition, they move around much slower, although they can still curl into balls. However, the green Dangos in Stardust Speedway do not age in that Round's Bad Future. Like with nearly every Badnik in the game, the Dangos are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them when they are destroyed.
Sonic Mania[]
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Dangos are enemies found in both Acts of Stardust Speedway Zone. They are purple in Act 1 and green in Act 2.
In gameplay, the Dangos normally crawl slowly left and right along the ground. When they see the player however, they will curl into a ball and roll towards the player to damage them, similar to the Spin Attack. They can also be destroyed while they are rolling by using Mighty's Hammer Drop. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal and award the player with 100 points.
A single Dango also appears after the fight with Giga Metal. After Giga Metal is defeated, the Phantom Ruby gets dislodged from him and left suspended in mid-air. If the player attempts to collect the Phantom Ruby, a Dango will appear to knock away the gem before rolling away offscreen.
Powers and abilities[]
The Dangos have the ability to assume spherical forms to roll over opponents with, similar to the Spin Attack. While in this form, they possess an absolute defense, making them indestructible.
Trivia[]
- "Dango" is short for dangomushi (ダンゴムシ?), the Japanese term for pill bug.
Notes[]
- ↑ While not listed in any instruction manuals, in-game source code from the Sonic Gems Collection version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD refers to this Badnik as "dango."
