The DD Wrecker[1][note 1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a wrecking ball-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman, who used it during the first and second Phantom Ruby incident.

Appearance[]

The DD Wrecker consists of two spheres bound together by a metallic chain with a rotatable joint. The two spheres are based on Dr. Eggman, with their bodies being light gray. They also have yellow eyes, a red nose, and light blue moustache-like accessories. Whenever they protrude their spikes, their bodies turn red.

History[]

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania, the DD Wrecker intercepted Sonic, Tails and Knuckles when the trio made their way through the Green Hill Zone. In the ensuing battle with the trio though, the DD Wrecker got destroyed.

Sonic Mania Plus[]

In Sonic Mania Plus, a rebuilt DD Wrecker returned to the Green Hill Zone where it attacked Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray on their way through the Zone. Like before though, the DD Wrecker got wrecked by the heroes.

Powers and abilities[]

The DD Wrecker's spheres are capable of independent levitation and can protrude spikes on their surfaces. When chained together, they act as pendulums for one another, thus turning themselves into swinging flails.

Battle[]

The DD Wrecker is the mini-boss of Green Hill Zone and the first boss of Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus overall. It is fought at the end of Green Hill Zone Act 1.

In Sonic Mania, the DD Wrecker is fought with Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. In Sonic Mania Plus, it is fought with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty or Ray.

Boss guide[]

The boss battle is initiated when the DD Wrecker appears and links its spheres together. When the battle begins, the sphere above will protect itself with its spikes, moving slowly back and forth while the one below is swung from side to side. After a few seconds, they will switch between this state. After that, both will protrude their spikes and move to the center, where they will spin in a quick motion before repeating the process.

To destroy the DD Wrecker, the player has to hit the sphere that is not protecting itself. However, they can also hit the one protruding its spikes through any means of invincibility. After one of the spheres has been hit three times, the other one will go to the top of one side of the screen. Then, it will protrude its spikes, and it will bounce to the other side. When it does so, it will stop to use its spikes, giving the player a chance to hit it. When this one has been hit three times as well, either in this phase or the other one, it will be destroyed, and the player will be able to finish the Act by the Goal Plate that will fall from above.

Trivia[]

  • This boss is seemingly based on the Egg Wrecker from the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • The DD Wrecker's spikes can still attack Mighty, even if he is performing a Spin Attack-related move. This is the only instance in the game where this happens.
