Synopsis[]

Earth, Sonic's dimension: Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Amy Rose are on a picnic in Never Lake, likely waiting for the annual return of Little Planet. However, all of a sudden, a mysterious ship arrives and surprises the trio. Tails wonders what it is, Amy is certain it's not Little Planet as she readies her hammer, and Sonic, not believing it to look like an Eggman creation either, wonders if they come in peace. Parademons then fly down from portals and attack the trio, much to Sonic's annoyance and lack of surprise at being proven wrong. Amy attacks a Parademon, while Sonic spins into another one about to attack her. Amy leaps at more of them while Tails leaps down to dodge her hammer swipe. However, as he continues to fight them, Sonic notices that the Parademons keep coming and sees no way to stop them from arriving, so he grabs Tails' arm and holds Amy's hand gently, deciding that they should get some space from their foes. He takes off with his friends in hand, with Tails and Amy noting that since the creatures they fought came from a portal, they could show up everywhere, coming to the conclusion that they should check on their friends. With a grin on his face, Sonic insists they'll make this quick.

Meanwhile, the ship, named the Ragna Rock, starts to approach Angel Island, with Knuckles the Echidna fighting off Parademons. Inside, DeSaad explains to his boss Darkseid (whose face is emblazoned on the outside of the ship) that their Father Box is informing them that Angel Island is being protected by the lone guardian Knuckles. DeSaad then elaborates that they're also aware the island's Master Emerald has the power to neutralize what they're searching for. In response, Darkseid commands DeSaad to eliminate it. DeSaad warns that the Ragna Rock's energy reserves will have a substantial amount taken up from the effort and they'll lose a potential source of power, but Darkseid forebodes DeSaad by telling him not to make him repeat himself, not concerned with the consequences and certain that power won't be a problem again once he has what he wants.

Knuckles grabs a defeated Parademon and then jumps on top of the Master Emerald, watching the Parademons retreating. Ragna Rock's right eye glows bright red, then shoots a beam down to Angel Island. The whole time, Knuckles stares the ship down, stubbornly ordering it not to try what it's doing before something red and blue closing in on the scene from afar rushes to save him from the beam just before it makes contact; the Master Emerald is shattered in the blast, and Angel Island falls and sinks into the ocean as a result.

Sonic, Amy, and Tails close in on Sunset City, seeing that it's being swarmed by more Parademons; Sonic decides to go on ahead by himself, leaving Amy and Tails behind (with Amy annoyed at him for unintentionally throwing some dust into her eyes). As he runs towards the city, Sonic encounters someone fast enough to keep up with him-- the Flash, who mistakes Sonic for Krakkl and wonders why he's here. Sonic assures him that he's got the wrong guy, but mentions that he likes his style. Flash assumes Sonic's just a civilian and tells him to let him handle the situation. Sonic then banters with him that he can help if he can keep up, and the Flash is pushed to introduce himself, declaring that he's "'speed' personified". Undeterred, Sonic introduces himself as "'speed' perfected", and the two speedsters grin at each other, a rivalry forming between them as they race into the city.

Flash: Listen, kid. I'm the Flash... I'm "Speed" personified.
Sonic: Then, I am "Speed" perfected!

Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Flash

Meanwhile, Silver the Hedgehog uses his telekinetic abilities to keep the Parademons in place, attempting to stop them, but struggling to manage the sheer amount of them. Suddenly, the Parademons are hit with explosives; John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps appears, having subdued the creatures with explosive fire from a large gun formed by his Green Lantern Ring. Green Lantern calls Silver impressive and requests that he group the Parademons to help him take them out. Silver agrees to this and asks the hero if he's a psychic too, but Green Lantern explains that he got his powers from "limited-issue" alien technology. He asks Silver if he's an alien or meta-human, to which Silver responds that he's "just" a hedgehog (to Green Lantern's amusement at his humble nature), then suggests clearing the skies so they can focus on the ground-level threats later.

Meanwhile, a Parademon chases a mother and her child into an alleyway. Before the Parademon can attack, Batman arrives to knee its head while Shadow the Hedgehog arrives simultaneously to pierce its torso with a Chaos Spear, the two dark heroes taking it down in a synchronous attack. They look back at the destroyed Parademon and lock eyes briefly, then dash off together as the mother tends to her child. Amy and Tails run through the city as Amy calls the situation awful and proclaims to Tails that they should help whatever people they can. The two find and attack a giant enemy up ahead, which gets finished off by a giant red laser from Cyborg and Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth. Wonder Woman praises Tails and Amy for their efforts and asks for more help from them.

Kalibak then appears to insist that Wonder Woman's attempt to recruit animals for help will only lead to slaughter. Unbeknownst to him, Knuckles shows up from behind and punches him away as payback for knocking his island out of the air, but Kalibak boasts he didn't feel it. At that moment, Superman swoops in from the skies to deal an incapacitating blow to the villain, asking if he felt that one. Knuckles is disappointed at this outcome, telling the Man of Steel that he wasn't done with Kalibak yet; Superman apologizes, but thanks Knuckles for "softening him up for [him]".

Amy asks Knuckles what happened to Angel Island, and he fills her in on his side of events and the fact that he'd have certainly been destroyed along with the Master Emerald if Superman hadn't rescued him, with Superman expressing regret that he couldn't assist Knuckles further. Batman notes that the invasion has stopped for the moment and that they should talk about what they are able to do, with Shadow telling the newcomers to their world that they should start by explaining themselves and the monsters they've been fighting. At that moment, Sonic and the Flash arrive, having counted how many Parademons they've taken down; Flash is ahead by one, but Sonic adds that the Parademons he defeated at Never Lake weren't counted. Sonic sees that everyone is here and asks for them to be brought "up to speed" (playfully insulting Flash in the process). Superman introduces his group as the Justice League, "heroes from another dimension", and goes over its members one by one, himself included; likewise, Sonic introduces himself and his friends to them while stating they aren't organized like the League is and just "take life as it comes", helping people wherever they can.

Knuckles, done with "pleasantries", asks who the person responsible for the attacks is so they can make him pay later; Cyborg introduces Darkseid, a conqueror of worlds seeking the Anti-Life Equation. Wonder Woman explains that the League has stopped him before, but now he's launched the Ragna Rock, a mobile satellite that can cross dimensions; they assume that he's looking for worlds and powers outside their multiverse as fuel for his conquests. Cyborg says that Darkseid had to look far to find Sonic's world, but fortunately, due to having some of Darkseid's tech integrated into his systems, Cyborg found out about the search, and the League used a Boom Tube of their own to travel to this dimension and intercept Darkseid before things escalated.

Silver is certain Darkseid is looking for the Chaos Emeralds (a fact Sonic quietly bemoans because villains always go after the Emeralds), Tails quickly explaining that they're mystic gemstones with unlimited power. Green Lantern notes that such power could fuel the Ragna Rock and allow Darkseid to destroy innumerable worlds... or worse, as Batman adds, let him skip his search entirely by granting him direct access to the Anti-Life Equation. When Wonder Woman asks if the Emeralds' power can be countered, Knuckles informs her that the only way of doing that was destroyed. Superman believes that everyone simply having more information than before is a good thing and begins to explain that they should pool their abilities and expertise to form a plan, but Shadow cuts him off, muttering that he doesn't have the time before turning to leave. As Superman insists after him that everyone's input is valued, Batman observes Shadow's impatience and follows, saying he'll handle the aloof hedgehog.

As Shadow walks off, he's surprised by Batman appearing to bluntly ask him who it was that he watched die in front of him because he wasn't able to protect them. When Shadow begins to ask how he'd know that, Batman reveals that he lost his parents when he was too young and weak to do anything about it; he explains that the pain and anger that such an event causes never leave and that he sees those feelings in Shadow, too. Acknowledging their kinship, Shadow reluctantly opens up about his friend Maria and how the military gunned her down while she was trying to keep him-- the Ultimate Life Form-- safe. Batman states that he swore to never let such tragedies happen again and resolves to use every advantage he has, including the Justice League, to ensure that the city his parents loved-- and their world-- are protected. He calls Shadow a "valuable asset" in ending Darkseid's plans and believes that the League would be the same to him. Seeing his point, Shadow is convinced to rejoin the group, but he scoffs that the League "better be worth the trouble."

Tails explains that while they have experience searching for the Emeralds, it's never been under as tight a deadline as now and adds that he's been developing a tracking system in his lab. Curious, Cyborg asks about his tech; Tails answers that it's a "speculative quantum-mapping algorithm" that's still in beta, something Cyborg decides he has to see for himself. Sonic, however, says there's no time to wait for his partner to work, with Silver adding that Darkseid's forces are presently searching for the Emeralds themselves. Wonder Woman agrees, telling the others to start the search as Cyborg and Tails work on the detector and stating that the League can keep in contact with their comms. Green Lantern advises each League member to pair up with one of Sonic's group to cover more ground and do so efficiently. Tails and Cyborg fly off first, Tails suggesting the two of them trade specs when the crisis is over and mentioning an arm cannon he's been working on (with Cyborg adding that Tails probably wouldn't want the integrated kind he has, something Tails agrees with). Shortly after, the other pairs of heroes leave to search separately.

As time passes and the search for the Emeralds continues, each hero pair strengthens their connection further; Knuckles relates to Superman losing his whole planet and having to deal with its remains poisoning him, calling his situation "too cruel", but while Superman agrees to an extent, he says that he cherishes the life he has on his Earth and therefore sees the importance of keeping it safe, a sentiment that earns him Knuckles' respect; Wonder Woman is impressed by Amy's car being able to fly while the pink hedgehog is amazed that the Amazonian can fly by herself and further astounded when Wonder Woman brings up her Invisible Jet in response; Shadow and Batman drive together on their respective motorcycles in silence, focused on their task; Cyborg integrates some of the Motherbox software he has into Tails' system to make it easier to look for the Emeralds-- an act Tails calls amazing, though Cyborg rebuts that Tails creating technology that he can interface with is just as impressive; Silver and Green Lantern discuss their abilities, with Silver awed by John's explanation of the Green Lantern Ring being able to create anything its user can imagine, should they have a clear mind and willpower; and finally, as they run on the surface of the ocean, Flash asks Sonic if his speed really comes naturally and he didn't have any "crazy mad-science treadmill accidents", to which Sonic answers affirmatively, stating that he's "just a hedgehog who loves adventure."

Flash and Sonic in particular are approaching Green Hill, Sonic believing that starting with South Island and moving on from that point is the best course of action. The two speedsters, however, unfortunately find that Sonic's hunch is right immediately when they come across Darkseid, who's beaten them to the location and obtained the blue Chaos Emerald; with a slight smile, he proclaims that his plan starts with this-- "a gem containing the ultimate power..."

Trivia[]

  • The Flash initially mistakes Sonic for Krakkl, a super-fast blue energy imp he first met in 1998's The Flash #136. Krakkl was created as a deliberate reference to Sonic by writers Grant Morrison and Mark Millar; Millar wrote several Sonic stories for the UK's Sonic the Comic earlier in the decade.
  • The Flash wonders if Sonic's speed could be the result of a "crazy mad-science treadmill accident," a reference to Sonic's origin story from the Sonic Bible (which was the source of most early Sonic canon, such as Sonic the Comic and the promotional comic of Sonic 1). Per this story, Sonic was an ordinary brown hedgehog who was turned blue in a lab explosion, caused when he broke the sound barrier running on a treadmill. But the Flash isn't just randomly suggesting this for the sake of a reference; mad-science treadmills are a longstanding part of Flash lore, in the form of the Cosmic Treadmill, built by the current Flash's predecessor and used to travel through time and into other universes, as well as giving notable Flash villain Zoom his powers.
  • Sonic replies to Flash's inquiry about the origin of his powers with "What you see is what you get! I'm just a hedgehog who loves adventure.", paraphrasing his famous line from Sonic Adventure 2 when he introduced himself to Shadow: "What you see is what you get! Just a guy that loves adventure!"
  • Darkseid uttering the phrase "It all starts with this. A gem containing the ultimate power...", is a reference to Shadow's line in Sonic Adventure 2: "It all starts with this… A jewel containing the ultimate power…".
