DC X Sonic the Hedgehog, also known simply as Sonic x DC (ソニック × DC Sonikku x DC)[1] or DC x Sonic (DC x ソニック DC x Sonikku?)[2] is a collaboration between Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and DC Comics's Justice League. On 24 September 2024, during the 2024 Sonic Central presentation, the crossover was announced. Marked with a comic series written by Ian Flynn premiering in March 2025, as a crossover between both properties, the collaboration will continue into at least 2026. This is the first Sonic comic crossover since 2015's Worlds Unite.
The plot of the comic involves "the two teams [working] together to defeat an evil threatening both of their worlds".[3]
History and information[]
Background[]
On 21 September 2024, the project was teased through an animation (which was also celebrating Batman Day) showcasing a thief rummaging through Gotham City before Shadow the Hedgehog, dressed as Batman, scares him off. Three days later, the project was formally announced at the September 2024 Sonic Central with a presentation revealing details about the project. The project was revealed to be a monthly comic book story penned by Ian Flynn. The comic series will premiere in March 2025 and is set to feature five issues in total.[4] A novel containing reprints of the five issues will be released on September 2, 2025.[5]
Promotional art was also revealed featuring Sonic the Hedgehog characters taking the roles of DC Comics characters, including Sonic as the Flash, Shadow as Batman, Knuckles as Superman, Amy as Wonder Woman, Silver as the Green Lantern, and Tails as Cyborg.[4]
Furthermore, the comics will have a collector's edition, as well as merchandise that will entail apparel, accessories, toys, and collectibles. The merchandise will be available starting from Autumn 2025.[4] Despite the crossover starting formally in 2025, apparel featuring Shadow as Batman released in October 2024 - in order to align with Fearless: Year of Shadow and Batman's 85th anniversary.
Jakks Pacific announced that they will be the ones to make a line that will include both the Sonic cast and the Justice League members featured in the currently ongoing comic mini-series "reimagined in bold, action-packed crossover designs".[6]
Plot[]
Prelude: Invasion of Apokolips[]
In Earth, Sonic's dimension. Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Amy Rose fight off Parademons with the arrival of a mysterious ship. Upon seeing no signs of the threat slowing down, the trio retreats. Meanwhile, the ship starts to approach Angel Island, with Knuckles the Echidna fighting off Parademons. DeSaad then explains to Darkseid Angel Island's situation. Unconcerned with it's consequences of using the Ragna Rock's energy reserves, Darkseid persists to eliminate the Master Emerald. After shattering the Emerald, Angel Island crashes down.
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Silver the Hedgehog then encounter the Justice League while helping civilians in Sunset City. The two teams introduce each other. Cyborg and Wonder Woman explains their history with the world-conqueror Darkseid, and his goal of finding the anti-life equation. Wonder Woman elaborates that he's created the Ragna Rock to cross the multiverse and seek other-worldly powers. Cyborg explains that he had to cast a wide net to find the world, and able to make a boom tube to escape the world if the plan fails. Silver figures that Darkseid is likely after the Chaos Emeralds, and that he'll use its power for destruction.
After explaining the Emeralds to the Justice League, Cyborg and Tails begin to work on creating a tracking system, while the others go to look for the Emeralds. Sonic heads to South Island with Flash, and encounters Darkseid. It's revealed he already has an Emerald, the two briefly clash against Darkseid, before he exits. Deesad explains to Darkseid that it seems the Emeralds may be trying to hide from Father Box. Darkseid orders his army to swift through the world, and put the Emerald he currently has into the Dimensional Engine.
The two teams of heroes fight off the invading Apokolips forces, Darkseid starts to put the Emerald into the Dimensional Engine, warping space and time itself. Dr. Eggman arrives and starts to fight off the Ragna Rock. The two teams fight Darkseid as the Dimensional Engine begins to destabilize. Time and space breaks, and Cyborg sends Sonic's group through the boom tube. Sonic greets Mister Terrific, Tails begs to reopen the boom tube. Mister Terrific then reveals that there are no dimensional coordinates to the target, Earth itself was destroyed.

Trivia[]
- The concept of talking animals being counterparts of the Justice League have already happened in the mainstream DC Universe, with the team Just'a Lotta Animals, a group that was a parody of the Justice League of America, that were brought by the Zoo Crew, who is also a superhero group of talking animals.
- Humorously, the cover for Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia became subject of a meme within the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase, due to Wonder Woman's boot bearing heavy similarities to Amy Rose's, several months prior to the announcement of the collaboration.
- It is unknown at this time if the comics will be canon, though it is highly likely that it will not be in continuity as the comic is published by DC Comics and not IDW Publishing. Ian Flynn, the comic's author, encourages fans to read the comic for the real answer.[8] However, Ian also stated the comic would be self contained, confirming it would not have any effect on canon.[9] Whether that means the comic is officially noncanon is uncertain.
- DC Comics has previously published crossovers with other companies intellectual properties, none of them ever becoming part of the continuity of either company's canon, with very few exceptions.
- The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has made multiple nods to DC Comics properties through the years, mostly from the Western side.
- Multiple issues of the Archie comic book series pokes fun at DC superheroes or reference them[citation needed]. In issue 172, for example, has Scourge the Hedgehog declare Sonic needs "one bad day" to turn evil like him, a nod to Batman's story The Killing Joke by writer Alan Moore.
- The Paramount incarnation of Sonic is a fan of comic books, especially of fellow speedster The Flash. Robotnik, however, hate-watched the Green Lantern (2011) movie.
