Wonderful rolemodelling.

— D.B. Platypus, "Role Models"

Duck Bill Platypus,[1] or just D.B. Platypus[2] for short, is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic platypus and professional image specialist.[2]

Appearance[]

D.B. Platypus is a humanoid platypus at about Sonic's height with chartreuse colored fur. He has a very thick head and neck with a broad arylide yellow bill, small green eyes and two hair tufts on both sides of his head. He also has rather broad shoulders and a fuzzy, apple green beaver-tail. For attire, he wears a black bowler hat, red-framed glasses reminiscent of pince-nez glasses, a black jacket with a befitting white shirt and red bow tie, white gloves, and white and dark cyan shoes.

History[]

TV series[]

Season one[]

SB S1E49 D.B

Platypus supervising Team Sonic.

D.B. Platypus was hired by Mayor Fink to make Team Sonic better role models for the village youth after they horsed around in public. During his course with the team, he managed to teach the heroes the principles of good manners through his very strict methods. Sticks, however, eventually grew tired of Platypus's rules and left. When Dr. Eggman later attacked the Unnamed Village, Platypus would scold the Old Monkey's manner when he tried to inform Sonic about the VIllage's problem, and had the elderly monkey tell the heroes this in a more formal way. During the battle with Eggman however, Platypus restricted them from using violence among other things, leaving the heroes helpless. Platypus, however, did not know that Eggman was about to win. However, he was disposed of by Sticks when she threw him into a garbage can, allowing her to get her team back in action.[2]

Season two[]

Working together with Dixon on Seaside Island's television network, Platypus inspired Dixon to hire Sticks as their new journalist when her news podcast proved more popular than the network's. However, Platypus, with Dixon's aid, kept adding changes to Sticks' TV news gig to improve its image until she quit from selling herself out.[3] Getting a job as a vacuum cleaner salesman later on, Platypus decided to check into Dr. Eggman's "Eggman Towers". However, the service he received there was mediocre due to Eggman prioritizing his search for a secret hotel reviewer (with Eggman even mistaking Platypus for said reviewer). In the end, Platypus and the guests got taken hostage by Eggman for an evil scheme. Team Sonic, however, ensured that Platypus was freed from Eggman's captivity, with Eggman Towers getting blown up around them in the process.[4] Platypus later took charge of a focus group that met up to review Meh Burger's delivery service. That meeting was adjourned when a new deal for the delivery system was made.[5]

Personality[]

Don't even think about it!

D.B. Platypus' strict demeanor.

D.B. Platypus is somewhat regal in his approach with a slight sense of dry humor. However, he is a very strict, if not a little short-tempered, adviser. He demands unquestionable compliance from his clients and their personal opinions hold no importance to him. When pleased, he gladly gives out compliments (or blows his praise whistle), but when even the slightest detail is off, he cites his clients by blowing his other whistle, which makes it difficult to tell when he is praising or scolding someone. In his view, the perfect role model is a soulless drone who follows every rule.[2]

As an image specialist, D.B. Platypus' forte is visual image. He is knowledgeable in the impression people leave on others and is well-versed in proper behavior, etiquette and good manners. However, he has been known to take his pursuits of the perfect image pertaining to his assignments way too far, leaving his recipients with gradually stricter and stricter rules to follow. He is similarly utterly unconcerned with how his work affects the surroundings in the long run, as long as his recipients act out the ideal behavior he has deemed befitting for their case, even when the audience he is improving an image for or his recipients disapprove of the results of his work. As such, he is not a good advisor for heroes, because he is not concerned by the effects his courses will affect heroes on the battlefield.[2][3]
