The Cyclone (サイクロン号 Saikuron-gō?) is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a transforming vehicle created by Miles "Tails" Prower with three separate modes; plane, walker, and car.

Description[]

Appearance[]

In its plane mode, the Cyclone resembles the Tornado 2 in its transformed state, possessing a similar color scheme and overall design. However, unlike the Tornado 2, the Cyclone is instead a monoplane and carries a missile launcher behind the seat and a mini-gun on the front. In its walker mode, the Cyclone loses its rear and wings, but gains two legs, while in cart mode, the Cyclone still lacks its wings, but gains four wheels and its rear splits up to position itself along the sides.

Features and abilities[]

The Cyclone most noticeably has three alternate modes which it can reconfigure its structure into: a plane mode, a walker mode, and a car mode. In plane mode, it becomes a rocket-powered monoplane, allowing for midair transportation at such speeds that it can outfly an explosion engulfing the entirety of Prison Island. In walker mode, it becomes a bipedal mech with an engine on the bottom that allows it to hover for short periods and is more suited for combat. Then, in car mode, it becomes a four-wheeled vehicle which can drive at high speeds and crash through certain objects, notably other vehicles on the road.

The Cyclone is one of Tails' most powerful creations, capable of overpowering all kinds of G.U.N. robot drones and can match Dr. Eggman's Eggwalker in firepower. It is armed with various weapons, including the Volkan Cannon minigun, a laser target, a grappling hook, and two kinds of missile launchers which can either shoot homing missiles at locked targets or missile barrages. Its most potent weapon however, is a large multi-colored laser which it can fire from the front.

The Cyclone has a very modular design, making it possible to equip it with various upgrades. The Bazooka and Laser Blaster greatly amplifies the power of its ammunition and the Booster allows it to hover in midair.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2, its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and the 2012 remaster, Tails uses the Cyclone as his transporting vehicle and offense in every mainline Action Stage, but does not pilot it in Chao World and its derived areas. In these games, it is the Hero equivalent of Dr. Eggman's Eggwalker, and is faster but slightly weaker compared to that mech. Like the Eggwalker, the Cyclone can use the Lock-On Missile along with a powerful gun known as the Volkan Cannon. It can also be upgraded with several new features, including the Laser Blaster, Booster, and the Bazooka.

The Cyclone can wear a number of Outfits in the games' multiplayer mode. When worn, they change the Cyclone's appearance to match the Outfit's theme amongst other things. These Outfits include:

  • Tornado Theme: Unlocked in Sonic Adventure 2 by clearing all Tails' missions, and in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle by clearing all Tails' missions with an A-Rank. The Cyclone's color scheme is changed to that of the original Tornado in Sonic Adventure. Additionally, the text on its side reads "Tornado" instead of the usual "Tornado III". When wearing it in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Cyclone can move faster.
  • Halloween Theme: A VMU downloadable Outfit on Sonic Adventure 2 available from the United States official game website starting on 11 October 2001. The Cyclone gets an orange and yellow color scheme and pumpkin icons on it.
  • Christmas Theme: A VMU downloadable Outfit on Sonic Adventure 2 available from the United States official game website starting on 30 November 2001. The Cyclone's color scheme is changed to primarily white and red.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

The Cyclone later makes an appearance in Shadow the Hedgehog in its plane form. In the game, it can be seen during the opening cutscene of Circus Park before crashing into the park. Here, it appears to be powered by a Chaos Emerald. Although it was never seen again, an object resembling the Cyclone can be seen attached to the spaceship used by Sonic and Shadow later in the game.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the Cyclone is mentioned. In this game, Brenda Hernandez asks Sonic what the name of the plane piloted by Tails is called in her questionnaire in Shamar. One of the optional answers is "Cyclone" (which is wrong, with the correct answer being the "Tornado").

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Cyclone is mentioned at the ending of the game in the Japanese version, where Classic Tails asks his modern self about why he decided to "give the Tornado feet". This is also a reference to the Tornado 2, which looks similar to the Cyclone. In the English version, this cutscene has a reference to the Rings instead.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Tails can summon the Cyclone upon learning the Cyclone Boost and Cyclone Cannon Skills during the The Final Horizon scenario. The Cyclone can only be summoned when Tails has maximum Rings. The Cyclone Boost can be activated by performing a Boost while moving, causing Tails to consume Boost Gauge and allowing him to fly both horizontally and vertically with directional inputs. Cyclone Cannon can be activated by holding the Boost button while standing still and pressing Attack, causing Tails to summon the Cyclone and fire a powerful beam that strikes foes and targets multiple times. Pressing left/right while firing will cause Tails to sweep the beam up to a certain horizontal limit, while pressing Jump will cancel the attack.

Notably, most of the labels and decals are missing from the Cyclone's model, making it more closely resemble its appearance in early promotional artwork for Sonic Adventure 2.

Tails piloting the Cyclone, from Sonic the Hedgehog #21.

In an attempt to find a cure for the Metal Virus, Tails - accompanied by Tangle and Whisper - headed to his lab in Central City to analyze the virus and how Sonic's speed affects it. Upon arrival, they discovered that the city was the latest target of the Metal Virus' infection, with the citizens of the city being exposed to the virus as it was dumped from Dr. Eggman's Faceship.[1]

Whilst Tangle and Whisper escorted the uninfected civilians to safety, Tails worked in the lab to find a cure. However, just as he was successful, the lab came under attack by Zombots and quickly became overrun, with Tails losing all the data he had gathered in the process. Tails headed towards the lab's garage and boarded the Cyclone to make his escape. Using the mech's car mode, Tails drove through the streets of the city towards the docks where a Restoration Rescue Shuttle was scheduled to arrive to escort the survivors to safety.[1]

Upon rendezvousing with Tangle and Whisper at the docks, Tails used the Cyclone's arsenal to provide cover for two as they helped the survivors board the ship. Despite the Cyclone's might, the Zombot horde proved too great in number and swarmed the mech, clawing and damaging it. With all the survivors safely aboard the ship, Tails had no choice but to abandon the Cyclone to the Zombot masses, thanking the trusty mech for its help before it exploded.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Despite being called Cyclone, the mech has the names "P-3a" and "Tornado III" written on it. However, those names may refer to each transformation the mech can take.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and its ports, Tails does not use the Cyclone while in Chao World.
