Not to be confused with Cyber Space or Cyberspace theme.

Shadow, this is the information highway system they call "Cyberspace."

The Cyberspace[1] (サイバースペース[2] Saibāsupēsu?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a dimension in the multiverse, described as an information highway system, where all kinds of information from earth come and go through.[1][2] At least two Cyberspaces have been known to exist.

Description[]

The Cyberspace is a digital world in the multiverse that looks like a vast, empty space with various platforms carrying all sorts of information from the earth. Within this dimension lies the United Federation's and the Central Information Agency's mainframe,[3][4] as well as a core program that controls the data flow here. The Cyberspace appears to be a very organized space with a place in the lives of the people of the earth, as the hypothetical destruction of its core program is said to be able to make the world plunge into chaos.[1][2] As such, this space is guarded by various defenses such as bottomless pits and walls of digital material, as well as G.U.N. robot troops. For travel, the Cyberspace has beacon-like structures whose light can be used for teleportation, Warp Holes, and networks of light similar to the high-speed warp tubes.[5]

The Eggman Empire also appears to have a Cyberspace of its own,[6][7] though its relation with the other, worldwide Cyberspace is unknown. Like its counterpart, this dimension serves as an interconnected digital world where data belonging to Dr. Eggman can be found. The information in this universe is fragmented, and is instead controlled by four separate terminals, or towers, which are found in a giant area linked with light networks.[8] This Cyberspace is also guarded by Badnik troops, specifically Pawn Series robots.

The Cyberspace, or at least the Eggman Empire's own, can be entered through a portal that is acceeded from certain computers,[9] though it is not shown how it can be exited.

Overview[]

Main articles: Digital Circuit and Mad Matrix

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Cyberspace is presented as one of the locations that played a role during the Black Arms' invasion. At one point, the Central Information Agency's mainframe there was compromised, presumably by the Black Arms.[4]

The Cyberspace is the location of the stages Digital Circuit and Mad Matrix, both of which looking almost the same and featuring many gimmicks in common. In the former, Shadow can either help the Black Arms destroy this space's core program and wreak havoc on the earth, or retrieve the Chaos Emerald there with Rouge. In the latter, the black hedgehog can opt to destroy the Cyberspace with Black Arm bombs, help Espio extract Dr. Eggman's data in the local terminals, or escape the dimension on his own.
