The Crystal Lock[1] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a lock mechanism created by the Ancients which uses the Chaos Crystals to open large paths. In gameplay, unlocking these locks grants access to new areas and levels.
Description[]
The Crystal Locks are dome-shaped stone figure with golden outlines. Up front they have a cylinder with a glowing engraving shaped like one of the Chaos Crystals (the Sky Crystal is not included). These locks are connected to mechanisms that block paths. Placing the matching Chaos Crystal on top of the engraving on the Crystal Lock will open its path while the Crystal Lock slides into the ground.
History[]
Games[]
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]
The Crystal Locks were created by the Ancients about a thousand years ago. The only thing history buffs like Amy Rose could deduce from them was that they were meant to hold something powerful.
A millennia later, Team Sonic began hunting down the Crystal Locks to find the Chaos Crystals before Lyric the Last Ancient. Thanks to Cliff's help, the team was found the first Crystal Lock which led to them to a map that showed the location of the rest. Over the next days, Team Sonic would unlock all the Crystal Locks to get the Chaos Crystals.
Gameplay[]
In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, there is a total of seven Crystal Locks to find, each with a recess matching one of seven Chaos Crystals. They are found around Cliff's Excavation Site and Bygone Island.
In gameplay, the Crystal Locks prevent the player from prematurely accessing areas in the hub worlds with access points to other levels by blocking the paths there with their mechanisms until the Chaos Crystal that will unlock the respective Crystal Lock is found. Most of these paths are unlocked by opening large gates. Another is open by raising a large bridge, a second is opened by activating a teleportation hub and a third is opened by activating an elevator. To unlock a Crystal Lock in gameplay, the player has to approach it with its matching Chaos Crystal. The path will then open automatically and will remain that way for the remainder of the game.
Trivia[]
- Despite that the Crystal Locks are meant to block travelers' paths to the Chaos Crystals, several people have settled down beyond these blocked paths. This include Salty on beyond the Sun Crystal's gate and the farmlanders and the turtle village beyond the Radiant Crystal's gate.
