Cortez is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian mammal originally set to appear in Sonic Universe #95, but due to the issue's cancellation, he never appeared.
Cortez is a light blue mobian mammal (likely a mongoose with black markings on the fur of his ears, tail tip, and around his eyes) with a white snout and chest hair. He possesses a lengthy purple, gold, and black-colored sword that he carries with a gray-colored gauntlet adorned on his left hand. On his right hand, he wears a white glove, with a purple interior lining. Cortez wears a brown strap and belt, held together with a yellow buckle and button. The strap is supported by a gray-colored shoulder pad. He wears purple-colored boots.
- Due to the cancellation of Sonic Universe #95, the issue which debuted Cortez, pivotal information, such as names and dialogue, are unknown. However, page scans have given a taste of what was to come.
At Castle D'Coolette, Cortez vandalized several pieces of artwork, all involving Antoine D'Coolette. As Antoine and Sonic the Hedgehog arrived at this location, they found the place vandalized, which insulted Antoine. Cortez revealed that he was behind this, and brawled against the two heroes. Using his sword, he managed to subdue Antoine, slamming him down to the bottom floor, where he found a new sword that rivaled Cortez's sword. Antoine arrived back into the fight and subdued Cortez, but rather than give him the finishing blow, he forced him to leave the premises, an offer which Cortez took advantage of.
Nothing is known about Cortez other than that he has a distinct resentment towards Antoine, as seen by the vandalism he was responsible for. It's likely Cortez also is tied with the Eggman Empire in some capacity, since he decorated a room full of Eggman Empire banners.
Powers and abilities
Cortez possesses a sword that can withstand hits from both Sonic's Homing Attack and Antoine's blade. However, it is as durable as Antoine's new sword he obtained during their first encounter.
- Like most standard swordwielders in fiction, Cortez is left handed.
- Cortez's sword is colored identically to the Deathcalibur that King Arthur possesses in Sonic and the Black Knight.
