Corruption[1] (汚染[2],Osen?, lit. "Contamination") is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a substance that coats surfaces and slows Shadow's ground movement to a slow walk, unless he uses Doom Morph.
In Shadow Generations, Corruption first appears in White Space once the area around Chaos Island is unlocked by Metal Overlord's defeat. Its stickiness slows Shadow to a slow walk, forcing him to jump across it or avoid it outright. Shadow obtains Doom Morph soon after, which allows him to swim and dash through Corruption freely, even on walls and ceilings. It is always accompanied by Morph Balls to activate the ability.
The Corruption in Chaos Island and most of White Space is a mixture of dark purple and black colors. In the underground portion of White Space, however, the Corruption is a mix of light blue and magenta instead. This foreshadows the presence of Mephiles the Dark, who uses this coloration of Corruption in his boss battle. Mephiles is able to produce and traverse Corruption with his Demon Diver[citation needed]ability, doing so frequently in his battle, implying he is the source of it.
