The Continue Monitor[1] (コンティニュー[2] Kontinyū?, lit. "Continue") is a Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. When obtained, it grants a Continue.

Description[]

Item Boxes containing the Continue Monitor power-up typically contain or display an icon depicting either a "C" or the word "CONT".

When breaking open a Continue Monitor, the player receives a Continue. As such, in case the player loses all of their lives, the Continue will let them start a level over with three extra lives once.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)[]

Continue

The Continue Monitors made their first appearance in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). In this game, the video monitors containing them display the word "CONT" in white on a black background. In gameplay, they only appear in the Special Stages.

Sonic Spinball[]

ContinueSpinball8-bit

In the 8-bit version of Sonic Spinball, the Item Boxes containing the Continue Monitor power-up depict a blue dot with the letter "C" written inside it. In this game, they are featured as hidden objects in small chambers in the corners of each level.

Trivia[]

  • An unused, but fully functional Continue Monitor also appears in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), but it is locked in a wall so it is impossible to get without cheat codes.
