The Coin[1] (コイン[2] Koin?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of currency that can be used in-game to unlock new content or gameplay elements.
Description[]
Coins, much like the real-life objects, are round, flat objects made of gold. In the center, they have a large, five-pointed star carved on them.
Overview[]
In Sonic Origins, Coins appear as the in-game currency. In gameplay, Coins appear directly in Anniversary Mode, Mirror Mode, and Story Mode. During these modes, they are displayed on the HUD in the lower left corner of the screen, where the life counter is normally displayed.
In Anniversary Mode, Mirror Mode, and Story Mode, the player can find Coins inside Coin Item Boxes that have replaced the 1-Ups in the levels. The player can also earn a Coin by methods that would normally grant lives (such as collecting one hundred Rings or scoring 50000 Points). Also, in the cases where the player would earn a Continue, they will earn three Coins instead. The player will also earn Coins when completing Missions or by completing a Boss Rush gauntlet, the latter grating them twenty-five Coins each time. When earning Coins from Missions on the other hand, the amount of Coins earned from each Mission is determined by the Rank the player receives for clearing said Missions, with the payout of Coins for each Rank being determined by the difficulty level for each Mission; the more difficult the Mission, the more Coins are rewarded for each Rank. Also, additional Coins for a Mission are awarded when the player completes said Mission for the first time. The Coin payouts for each Mission are as follows:
Difficulty | Rank | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 3 | 5 | |
2 | 3 | 5 | 7 | |
3 | 5 | 7 | 10 | |
5 | 7 | 10 | 15 | |
7 | 10 | 15 | 20 |
Coins serve various functions in Sonic Origins. For one, they can be used to unlock additional content in the different Premium Collections in the Museum. Each entry in those collections costs five Coins. Also, when playing in Anniversary Mode, Story Mode and Mirror Modes, Coins allow the player to replay Special Stages in case they fail to complete it. The cost of retrying such a stage is one Coin. The player can collect a maximum of 999 Coins.
