Cloud Sanctuary is the sixth and final area in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. It is a giant floating island fortress and the headquarters of Lyric the Last Ancient and his armies. After kidnapping Amy, Lyric brought her here to extract her archaeological knowledge, only to later face Team Sonic in a final confrontation.
Description[]
Cloud Sanctuary consist of several floating pink islands joined by roads, enclosed by clouds which block any view of the earth's surface below. On them are pink ruins of Ancient fortresses, including round, temple-like buildings with pillars, arches and dome-shaped rooftops. Like Ancient Ruins, several structures have crumbled and are overgrown with various plants. Several rivers also pour out the ruins. Amidst the ruins is a red, yellow and grey blimp-based metal aircraft with turrets that is Lyric the Last Ancient's airship.
The adventure level takes place within the pink-skied, cloud-covered ruins. The level is an archaeological marvel of partially-crumbled structures with arches, pilars and roads, some of which are overgrown with plants, that show the Ancients' architecture. Floating all around are also the areas' temple structures. Close by is Lyric's airship, a menacing battleship with Ancient runes, engines, propellers, and blue and red orbs covering its hull. In front of its hull are also high-tech black and red scaffolds supported by wires.
Story[]
While imprisoned in Cloud Sanctuary, Amy boldly opposed her captor Lyric the Last Ancient as the rogue Ancient vented his frustrations about Sonic's persistence against him. While Amy retorted with quips, Lyric's only interest was ripping Amy's knowledge on the Crystal Shards' locations out of her brain as he sent his army after Team Sonic, just as they invaded Cloud Sanctuary.
Soon after, Amy was freed by her friends, and the fully-assembled Team Sonic decided to confront Lyric once and for all. Coming face-to-face with Lyric on his airship, Team Sonic proudly proclaimed that together, with all their differences, they were unbeatable. In response, Lyric trapped Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks in a prison sphere so he could crush Sonic at his weakest. However, the plan failed when Sonic defeated Lyric after a fierce battle and freed his team.
Crawling away in defeat, Lyric summoned a weapon to wipe out Team Sonic, still intend to build his empire with the Crystals. However, the weapon was disabled by Shadow, who had finally tracked Lyric down to pay him back for using him. As Shadow sent Lyric flying, Sonic opened a hatch on the airship, sending Lyric falling to his doom. As Amy got upset over not getting the final shot at Lyric, Sticks tried cheering her up with a long-winded (and downright crazy) speech about how teamwork meant their efforts were wasted together. While Sonic agreed to the power of teamwork, Shadow, deeming teamwork pathetic, took his leave on the note that he was Sonic's superior, while Team Sonic began the long trip home.
Gameplay[]
Cloud Sanctuary's adventure level, like the others, is divided into two parts (the foreground and background) that run parallel to each other, which can be traveled between with the Slingshot. Standard gimmicks here include Bounce Pads, Boost Pads, Enerbeam Swings, Rails and disappearing platforms. Hazardous obstacles in Cloud Sanctuary include bottomless pits, red panels with blowtorches and pools of water. Touching of falling into such obstacles will damage the player and return the characters to an earlier position. In addition, the underground sections have bombs that detonate upon being touched or a few seconds after being approached. Cloud Sanctuary also has collectibles scattered about which unlock extra content if collected and breakable obstacles that give extra Rings.
Like other adventure levels, Cloud Sanctuary's has several character-specific gimmicks for the playable characters. These include dash blocks for Sonic, Air Vents and Sea Fox sections for Tails, Burrow spots for Knuckles, and Boomerang Switches for Sticks.
Overview[]
Air Fortress[]
Air Fortress is the area's only adventure level. The foreground is set within the fortress ruins, while the background is set just outside Lyric's airship. It becomes available after obtaining twenty-four Sonic Badges. This adventure level features many disappearing platform above bottomless pits and Rails. Each of the playable characters are pushed to the limit here, especially in the background sections where Sonic, Tails, and Sticks have their respective paths designed for their abilities alone; Tails must use Air Vents to fly through corridors, Sonic must jump between Rails while destroying dash blocks standing in the way, and Sticks must destroy Boomerang Switches to lower spiked barriers blocking the passages. Additionally, Sticks also sometimes has to make some of the disappearing platforms disappear in order for her boomerang to reach its destination. Knuckles' burrow sections are located only in foreground on the other hand, where he can dig through walls
At the start, keep going down the path on the right to arrive at a Slingshot. After using it, follow where the path on the right takes the characters to find another Slingshot and use it. From there, go down the path on the right and follow it to a new Slingshot. Use that and follow next the path on the right again to eventually reach the next Slingshot. After using this Slingshot, go down the path on the right, which consists mostly of grind rails and Enerbeam Swings, to reach the next Slingshot. Use it to reach the next path and go down the path on the right once more, which require fast reactions due to unstable footing above pits, to find the next Slingshot. Use it and follow again the path on the right from there to reach the goal.
