Chao! Chao! Chao!

— Chocola and Cheese celebrating, Sonic Heroes

Chocola[2] (チョコラ Chocora?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a child-like Chao, the twin "brother" of Cheese,[2][3] and the companion of Vanilla the Rabbit.[4] They have an unspecified connection to Chaos and possesses data on its powers. They were once kidnapped by Neo Metal Sonic for their bio-data, but was saved by Team Rose. They currently live with Cream and her family.[5]

Appearance[]

Chocola is almost identical to Cheese, differing only in coloration. Like most other neutral Chao, they have a teardrop-shaped head, yellow markings at the tip of their hands, feet and the top of their head, a yellow ball hovering above them that changes appearance corresponding to their emotions, blue eyes, two pink butterfly-like wings, and a small circular tail. Unlike Cheese, however, Chocola has brown skin instead of light blue. They also wear a light blue bow tie.

History[]

Sonic Heroes[]

In Sonic Heroes, Chocola was kidnapped by Neo Metal Sonic (disguised as Sonic) alongside Froggy for their connection to Chaos. Chocola and Froggy were later stored inside Neo Metal Sonic while the robot copied their data on Chaos. Eventually, they were freed when Team Rose, who had been searching for them, defeated Neo Metal Sonic in the Egg Emperor, and Chocola was happily reunited with Cheese.

Soon after, Chocola and Team Rose arrived at the site where Neo Metal Sonic showed himself with Team Sonic, Team Dark and Team Chaotix, where Neo Metal Sonic used the data he had copied from Chocola, Froggy and the other teams to become Metal Madness. Chocola then remained behind while the teams fought Metal Madness and Metal Overlord. After Metal Sonic was defeated, Chocola and the majority of Team Rose said goodbye to Amy when she took after Sonic.

Crisis City[]

Floral Forest Village was soon invaded by Dr. Eggman in his new flying fortress, the Faceship. With it, Dr. Eggman poured a large batch of the Metal Virus into the village, creating several Zombots. During the attack, Chocola helped Vanilla barricade their house from the inside. Vanilla then told Cream to stay inside, but Cream wished to aid the villagers as she had Cheese by her side, just as Vanilla had Chocola. Vanilla, however, convinced the duo to stay with her.

Eventually, Chocola, Cheese and Vanilla were surrounded by Zombots inside their house. After Cheese got caught by a Zombot when attacking it, Chocola, in an attempt to help their twin, attacked the Zombot too, only to get grabbed by it. Due to having touched the Zombot, the duo soon became Zombots themselves and turned their attention to Cream and Vanilla. Fortunately, Sonic arrived and helped Cream and Vanilla evacuate their house. Chocola tried afterward to attack Sonic, but Gemerl got in the way. Sonic then trapped Chocola and Cheese inside glass jars to prevent them from posing a larger threat due to their flight abilities. Unbeknownst to Sonic though, Chocola and Cheese began to break out while he was preoccupied.[6]

The Last Minute[]

After the duo freed themselves, Chocola and Cheese made their way to Central City, where they came across Tails at his lab but he did not notice them. Chocola and Cheese found the mains supply for the lab and proceeded to destroy it, cutting off all the power there. Soon, Tails rushed out of the lab in his Cyclone, which prompted the Zombot Chao to chase after him. However, Tails managed to pull off enough evasive maneuvers to leave the Chao in the dust.[7]

All or Nothing[]

After the Deadly Six had taken over Eggman's plans, Zavok used his powers to lead a large horde of Zombots to Angel Island, which included Chocola. After the Faceship was effectively destroyed by Rouge, Zavok became Giant Zavok to attack the survivors on Angel Island. From this, he grabbed a handful of Zombots, including Chocola, and threw them onto the island's surface to face the survivors there. Chocola and Cheese chased after Tails, eventually pinning him down by grabbing hold of his twin tails. After Super Sonic and Super Silver had reversed the effects of the Metal Virus all around the world, the Zombots were no more and were cured. This act turned both Chocola and Cheese back to normal, leaving them to joyfully celebrate with Tails.[8][9]

Out of the Blue[]

Some time later, Chocola visited the Chaotix Detective Agency with Cream, Vanilla, Cheese and Gemerl to gift Team Chaotix with treats for their hard work. So as to relieve them of their more strenuous tasks, Vanilla tasked Chocola and Cheese with putting files away. Later on, Chocola went to Tangle's party that she was hosting in Spiral Hill Village and danced with Cheese. Though they enjoyed their time for a while, the party was soon crashed by Eggman arriving in a large mech suit with the intent of destroying everyone. Despite the doctor's efforts though, he was defeated.[10][11][12]

Chao Races and Badnik Bases[]

Back home, Chocola, along with Cream and Cheese, would help make cookies. When Chocola began munching on the cookie dough though, Vanilla got a call from Amy.[13]

Dinner at Cream's[]

Vanilla had to leave their house in Floral Forest Village, due to them being out of butter. Cream asked Gemerl to set the table and the robot left to do so. She overheard a commotion in the dining room and, not wanting to leave the stove, asked Chocola to check on Gemerl. Chocola came back screaming a few moments later and Rough the Skunk came into the kitchen. Cream was startled and knocked over a pan, causing a fire on the stove. Then Rough and Tumble attacked Gemerl with food and Cream tried to stop them while calling them rude. Vanilla got them to apologize and the Chaotix arrived, graceful they don't have to fight more bad guys. Cream apologized to her mom, but Vanilla said she was brave, and she will always be proud of her for doing her best. They hugged and Cream asked what they should do for dinner. They get takeout and Cream has a good dinner with Charmy.[14][15]

Personality[]

In the games, not much is known about Chocola's personality, which leaves it to be ambiguous.

In the IDW comics, Chocola is depicted as a well-mannered Chao. They are very calm but quite cautious of dangerous situations. They are not as brave as their twin Cheese, but will still offer their help to those in need when they can.[6]

Powers and abilities[]

Like other Chao, Chocola is capable of flight in midair.

Relationships[]

Cheese[]

Cheese is Chocola's twin sibling. They are very close to each other, and when something happens to one of them, the other will immediately defend them, no matter the consequences. As Chocola tried to save Cheese from a Zombot before they fell victim to the Metal Virus.[6]

Vanilla the Rabbit[]

Chocola is Vanilla the Rabbit's companion. While Chocola can defended itself the Chao likes to sit at home with Vanilla while their friends stop Eggman, but Chocola will protect Cream's family, especially Vanilla.

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Chocola originally lived with the other Chao at the Chao Garden adjacent to Cream and Vanilla's estate in the Southern Baronies until the estate was attacked and the Chao Garden ruined by Snively. Amy rescued Chocola and his fellow Chao, and relocated them to New Mobotropolis.

After the Super Genesis Wave altered Sonic's multiverse, Chocola's past was changed to be the same as his game counterpart's. Currently, he lives with Vanilla and Gemerl.

Trivia[]

  • Though Chocola is genderless,[1] they were referred to with he/him pronouns in Sonic Heroes.
  • Chocola's name and color are a reference to chocolate, keeping in line with Cream and Cheese's names, which are all based on dairy products.
  • Amy name-drops Chocola in LEGO Dimensions when listing her past accomplishments during a quest in the Sonic the Hedgehog Adventure World, which was the first time they had been referenced in a video game in thirteen years.
  • Both Chocola and Gemerl have in common in being characters associated with Cream the Rabbit who were both absent from the series after their debut for roughly 16–17 years until their return in the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series.
