Chicio is a character that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. He is a native from Super Marxio World and one of the Marxio Brothers, a trio of villainous electricians closely allied with Dr. Ivo Robotnik. During the RBR era, Chicio and his brothers would run Robotnik's various casino and carnival Zones.
Concept and creation[]
Chicio was created by Nigel Kitching and Richard Elson. He, along with his brothers, are based on the Marx Brothers. Chicio is specifically based on the stage persona of Chico Marx, who was a dim-witted albeit crafty con artist, seemingly of rural Italian origin.
Appearance[]
Chicio is a short, middle-aged man with a short black mustache and black hair hidden under his red cap, which he wears backwards. He wears blue overalls, a white shirt, and brown shoes.
History[]
Past[]
Chicio and his brothers were three electricians who came from Super Marxio World, a place they are terrified of. It is implied that they were brought out of this world to Mobius by Dr. Robotnik, after which they worked to run his 'commercial ventures'.[1]
Ruled by Robotnik[]
In the Casino Night Zone, Chicio and his brothers were tasked by Robotnik to stop Sonic the Hedgehog. Chico released Badniks to attack Sonic, and while the hedgehog was distracted, the Marxio Brothers captured Porker.[1] By holding Porker hostage, the trio followed Chicio's plan to tie both him and Sonic to a railroad for a train to run them over.[1][2] As Grouchio took the glory for Chicio's plan though, he berated him when the plan failed and Sonic escaped. Though the brothers fled to engage Sonic in combat and keep his Disruptor from him (eventually by destroying it), Porker was able to un-rig their gaming machines in the meantime.[2]
Chicio and his brothers were later put in charge of the Carnival Night Zone on the Floating Island. After discovering Knuckles the Echidna in their park, Chicio got blamed by Grouchio when the latter failed to snipe Knuckles. Cornered by Knuckles, the brothers quickly offered him a deal.[3] By offering Knuckles some of the earnings they would get from their park, which he could use to fix up the island for the return of his people, Chicio and his brothers mellowed out Knuckles and got him to try out the Hell House Ride, secretly planning to kill him using the ride.[4] Despite Chicio's best attempts behind the controls for the ride's traps though, Knuckles survived, but still accepted the Marxio Brothers' business proposal.[5]
After Chicio and his brothers made Knuckles their 'marketing consultant', they had to stop him when the echidna attempted to destroy Robotnik's Launch Base Zone, since the brothers were secretly working for Robotnik. During this, Chicio blurted out their allegiance to Robotnik, forcing the Marxio Brothers to knock Knuckles out cold with their weaponized hovercraft.[6] However, while the brothers were distracted while taking on the phone with Robotnik, Knuckles retaliated and took down their weaponized hovercraft. As the first visitors to the new park arrived, Chicio called in a Badnik horde to deal with Knuckles so he and his brothers could welcome the arrivals.[7] Nevertheless, Knuckles beat the Badniks and struck a fault-line before the guests entered the park, splitting the Carnival Night Zone away from the rest of the Floating Island and dropping it to the surface of Mobius, along with Chicio and his brothers.[8]
Post-Ruled by Robotnik[]
Chicio would later work at the Chemical Plant when Grouchio was put in charge of the place. With his brothers and him seemingly reformed thanks to no longer being under the rule of Robotnik, they asked Sonic and Miles "Tails" Prower to help with a problem they had with their factory.[9] The heroes then discovered and defeated Megatox, the source of the problems, garnering thank and praise from Chicio and his brothers, although Sonic still remained skeptical about their true intentions.[10]
Personality[]
A loyal brother and a shrewd businessman, Chicio is the portly electrician who builds a lot of the traps and inventions for his older brother Grouchio. Chicio often has the credit for his work stolen by Grouchio, unless the plans go awry, in which case the blame is placed firmly on Chicio's shoulders.
Chicio is notably less intelligent than Grouchio, which the latter calls him out on. He often makes mistakes and messes up the Marxio Brothers' plans, often causing Grouchio to insult him. Despite this and hating what he is put through by Grouchio, he still respects his brother greatly, referring to him as "boss", and continues to do everything that is asked of him for little to no reward (even if it means working for Grouchio without pay).
Chicio speaks with a thick, stereotypical Italian accent, frequently using phrases such as "Mamma mia!" and adding "-a" to the end of words (for example, "We don't-a know what it is" and "What-a you talking about, Spike-a-ball?"[2]).
Trivia[]
- Chicio is a clear mockery and parody of the Super Mario Brothers, Mario and Luigi.
- He is also a parody of Chico Marx.
- He also bears some similarities to the Mario character, Toad.
- Chicio and his brothers have a video game series based off of them, although Sonic is not a fan, saying; "who cares about the adventures of three electricians?"[11]
