Charmy is an anthropomorphic black-and-yellow striped bee with yellow-and-black striped antennae and golden eyes. He wears an orange vest with a bee emblem on the left, white and orange shoes, white gloves cuffed with black rings, a black pilot's helmet with a red rim and flight goggles.

History

Past

After Dr. Eggman vanished, Charmy and the Chaotix Detective Agency were hired by the Resistance to look for the doctor so that they could bring him to justice.[2][3] After finding no trace of him in the ruins of Imperial City, the Chaotix located Cubot and Orbot and interrogated them, only to learn that they knew nothing. When Eggman's computer showed no trace of escape plans either, the Chaotix searched Eggman's other bases, only to find nothing but trouble. Throughout it all however, Charmy managed to enjoy himself.[2]

Eventually, the Chaotix found Eggman in an idyllic village (which Charmy took a liking to) after receiving an anonymous tip on the doctor's whereabouts. However, it seemed like Eggman had lost his memory, having lost all recollections of his evil deeds and ambitions, leading to him becoming a productive member of the village, now with the name of "Mr. Tinker". While Charmy fully believed that Eggman was a good guy now, the Chaotix still spent the next few days interrogating and observing Eggman, only to conclude that his amnesia was legit.[2]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman

When Espio brought in Sonic to help the Chaotix decide on whether or not it was right to penalize Eggman as he was now, Charmy introduced the hedgehog to the village and the amnesiac Eggman, whom Charmy played with while the others talked. However, when some Badniks, whom the heroes believed had come for Eggman, neared the village, Charmy got called into action. While helping his friends fight the Badniks, Charmy noticed a Flapper nearby and took it out. In the aftermath, Sonic had concluded that Eggman was indeed a changed man and that the Badniks were not there for him, which Charmy used to annoy Vector with how right he was about Eggman. With the heroes having settled on leaving Eggman to his new life, Charmy got ready to depart with his friends when Shadow and Rouge showed up, the former seeking to eliminate Eggman after hearing him mention Eggman Land.[2]

When Sonic and Shadow began fighting, Charmy and his crew planned to help Sonic, only to see that they could not keep up with them. Due to this, they turned their attention to Rouge. However, Rouge revealed that she was on their side. As it turned out, Shadow was already looking for Eggman, and would have hurt the Chaotix if they got in his way. As such, she gave the Chaotix the anonymous tip that led them to Eggman so they would have time to verify Eggman's situation and bring in Sonic before she "helped" Shadow find Eggman. Although Charmy did not understand Rouge's plan, he and his crew nonetheless tried to stop Shadow from getting to Eggman, but failed. Fortunately, Shadow had been convinced by Sonic to talk to the amnesiac Eggman first. After Eggman showed Shadow that his "Eggman Land" was but an amusement park for children (which Charmy found amazing), Shadow and Rouge took their leave.[4]

Battle For Angel Island

Eventually, Charmy and his teammates were called to Resistance HQ. There, they and the Resistance's other allies were informed that the Resistance needed their help to liberate Angel Island, which had been conquered by Neo Metal Sonic and turned into a flying fortress. To make matters worse, Neo had also secured the Master Emerald for himself on the island. Eventually, Charmy was assigned to help two of the assembled group's factions with breaking the Egg Fleet's control over Angel Island while Sonic and Knuckles confronted Neo.[5]

CantSaveEveryone

On the way to Angel Island, Charmy spent the time playing with cards. As soon as their ship approached Angel Island however, the Egg Fleet shot it down. Fortunately, Charmy and his allies got off the ship before it crashed. Landing then on Angel Island, Charmy and his team were instructed to "do [their] thing", and began battling the island's legion of Egg Pawns.[5] Eventually, Charmy and his team began focusing on destroying the right wing unit that had been attached to Angel Island, but they were unable to make much progress until Tails hijacked an Egg Fleet battleship and began bombarding the wing unit with it. As the wing unit fell apart, Charmy carried Espio to the battleship Tails had secured.[6] When Master Overlord (a transformation Neo Metal Sonic had achieved with the Master Emerald) then attacked the battleship, Charmy joined his allies in a midair assault on Master Overlord, whom they forced closer to Angel Island (which was in freefall due to the absence of the Master Emerald) while Knuckles focused on removing the Master Emerald from Master Overlord's body. During the battle, Charmy got shaken off Master Overlord. Having only caught Sonic, Charmy worried about the rest. Fortunately, they were all rescued by Silver with his psychokinesis. Knuckles subsequently got the Master Emerald away from Master Overlord and brought it back to Angel Island, returning the island to the sky while Master Overlord powered down to normal. With the battle over, Charmy was brought down on Angel Island where he and his teammates took a much needed break.[7]

As everyone got ready to leave Angel Island onboard a repaired Egg Fleet battleship, Charmy and his team went to see Amy to collect their payment for their services, which included finding Dr. Eggman, uncovering the identity of the doctor's impersonator, and helping bring down Metal Sonic, with Charmy being excited about getting "fancy take-out". Being unprepared for the request, Amy tried insisting that being part of the Resistance was its own reward.[3]

Crisis City

IDWCharmyInfected

Charmy being swarmed by Zombots, from Sonic the Hedgehog #17.

While Charmy and his team were in their office in Seaside City, they received news from Tails about recent developments. As it turned out, Dr. Eggman had returned and was using a Metal Virus to change people into Zombots. In addition, Sonic had been infected with the Metal Virus and now had to run excessively to keep his disease in check. Soon after, a Zombot entered the Chaotix's office. Charmy wanted to attack it, but Vector stopped him, saying that touching it would turn him into a Zombot. As such, the Chaotix decided to withdraw from their building, hoping that they could hide in the city. However, a Zombot outbreak had already begun. Charmy and the Chaotix also noticed Eggman's Faceship in the distance, which was dumping the Metal Virus into the city, and Charmy remarked that he would not be able to get them up there. The Chaotix then decided to split up and help evacuate the inhabitants to the docks. While Charmy distracted the Zombots, Espio tied them up with ropes. When Charmy and Espio were later leading a group of civilians to the docks, one of the civilians were revealed to have already been partially infected by the Metal Virus. Having no choice, Vector trapped the civilian in a makeshift cage made of cars, which Charmy did not like. Even Espio could not persuade Charmy's mood. After reaching the docks, the survivors fled onboard a Rescue Shuttle while Charmy counted them. After realizing how few they had managed to save, Charmy decided to save the one that Vector had to leave in the city. Ignoring Vector's orders, Charmy flew into the city, thinking that it was not too late. However, when he got there, the civilian had already become a Zombot and attacked him. As Charmy turned away in fear, he was captured by several Zombots, who overwhelmed him with their numbers.[8]

Untold Tales of the Metal Virus

After becoming a Zombot, Charmy wandered around Seaside City for a while.[9] He later took to the skies and joined a flock of Zombot Flickies flying. They soon found a Rescue Shuttle and began bombarding it. Coincidentally, Vector was on the shuttle and emerged in an effort to catch Charmy in a Containment Bubble. Several Flickies surrounded Charmy and attacked Vector. The crocodile used a shield to block their attacks and tried to catch Charmy; the bee managed to closely out-maneuver him with his swift dodges. Soon enough, after Espio joined the fight, Vector used a smoke bomb to confuse the Flickies and track Charmy by his buzzing sound. This worked effectively and Vector managed to capture Charmy.[10]

The Last Minute

CharmyZombotBreakOut

Charmy breaks out and attacks the refugees, from Sonic the Hedgehog #22.

Charmy was taken back to Restoration HQ with the intent of turning him back to normal as soon as Tails developed a cure. The decision was met by objections from Gemerl, as his primary objective is to keep Cream the Rabbit safe at all costs, but he stepped down after being talked to by Cream.[1]

Unfortunately, a survivor in Restoration HQ was revealed to be infected with the Metal Virus and the resulting chaos, along with Charmy's efforts to break out of his confinement, allowed him to escape and infect the civilians inside the Restoration base. Whilst the few uninfected survivors boarded a Rescue Shuttle to escape the base, Charmy flew through the open launch bay doors in an attempt to infect them. Before he could reach them, Vector lunged towards him and grabbed the bee, protecting the survivors at the cost of infecting himself. Charmy was then marched out of the launch bay by Vector, who decided to use the last moments of his free will to hold back the Zombot masses so the others could escape.[1]

All or Nothing

After the Deadly Six had taken over Eggman's plans, Zavok used his powers to lead a large horde of Zombots to Angel Island, which included Charmy. After the Faceship was effectively destroyed by Rouge, Zavok grew to a giant size to attack the survivors on Angel Island. From this, he grabbed a handful of Zombots, including Charmy, and threw them onto the island's surface to face the survivors there. He and Vector attacked Espio with all their might but could not catch him. Eventually, with the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Super Silver, they were able to warp the entirety of the Metal Virus away from the world and to the sun. This act turned Charmy back to normal, leaving him to joyfully sing with Espio and Vector.[11][12][13]

Out of the Blue

Shortly after reuniting, Silver used his psychokinesis to carry the Chaotix down to the surface to fight Zavok after he began his attack on civilians. When Vector and Espio held the Zeti back, Charmy headbutted him. Nonetheless, Zavok shook this off and broke free of his hold. Soon enough, Silver used his psychokinesis to keep Zavok in place while Charmy and the others stood around him on guard. Later on, when Metal Sonic critically injured Gemerl in order to retrieve Orbot and Cubot, Charmy attempted to fly after the robot. Vector immediately held him back, not wanting a repeat of previous events.[14]

Party31

Charmy parties with his friends, from Sonic the Hedgehog #31.

Some time later, the Chaotix became swamped with work on missing persons cases. Cream, Vanilla, Cheese, Chocola and Gemerl came by to gift the trio with treats for their hard work. Charmy drooled at the sight of the treats and demanded them. However, despite the kind gestures, the Chaotix did not have time for eating as they barely had enough time to do their work. Vanilla took it upon herself to take over for the detectives; she planned to handle calls with Cream and update the trio as Gemerl processed information of the missing people. Realizing they could go do their thing, the Chaotix set off to find the missing people, with Charmy taking the treats along with them. Later on, Charmy and the Chaotix were invited by Tangle to a party in Spiral Hill Village. Though the young bee enjoyed his time throwing confetti for a while, the party was soon crashed by Eggman arriving in a large mecha with the intent of destroying everyone.[15] Charmy proceeded to take part in the attack on Eggman's mecha. During the fight, he tried to convince a disobedient Omega, who had been incorporated into Eggman's mecha, to resist Eggman's commands, but Eggman quickly managed to rein in the rebellious robot and Charmy had to flee from the mecha's renewed assault. Eventually though, Eggman was defeated when Sonic returned. After Eggman had departed, Charmy was embraced by a group hug arranged by Tangle.[16]

Zeti Hunt

Charmy, Espio and Vector later visited the new Restoration HQ, where Jewel asked them for help stopping the Deadly Six. After determining that the Deadly Six would attack Sunset City next, the Chaotix decided to head there.[17]

Personality

Charmy is an immature, fun-loving kid. Hyperactive and beebrained, he loves to play and can be seen buzzing around everywhere. However, he is also very friendly, lighthearted and cheerful. He also loves to prank around, like when he annoyed Vector for being wrong, and is rather quick to forgive and forget as seen by how he was the first to befriend Eggman after he had seemingly had turned over a new leaf due to amnesia while the rest of his team remained apprehensive.[2]

Because he is a child, Charmy would rather play than work, as shown by his disgruntled disposition whenever he is called into action while busy playing. That does not mean he does not enjoy his work, as he can often find ways to play and entertain himself while on the job. He also loves anything flower-related, be it either flowers themselves or honey tarts.[2]

Though young, Charmy is a very trusting individual and tends to see the good and fun in people, sometimes even when they are evil. He also has a strong sense of justice and is willing to help those in need, no matter the situation.[2][8]

Powers and abilities

CarryToSafety

Charmy carrying his teammates to safety, from Sonic the Hedgehog #9.

Thanks to his wings, Charmy is capable of nearly perpetual flight as he is always flying around. He can also fly very fast.[2] He is also gifted with a sharp stinger that can pierce even metal.[6]

Despite his size, Charmy is surprisingly strong as well, being able to carry his two teammates through midair, though with noticeable effort.[7]

Weaknesses

Despite being quite strong for his age, Charmy can get exhausted from carrying people for a certain amount of time.[5][7] Due to Charmy's young age, he is very reckless and can end up in dire situations when not supervised.[8][14]

Relationships

Vector the Crocodile

Vector acts as one of Charmy's mentors in the Chaotix. He enjoys making fun of him to the point where it annoys him. He tends to act quite rebellious under Vector's orders as a result of this. The pair have a good working relationship and Charmy does what he can to support the team. He has been known to question Vector's leadership before when it conflicts with his pure sense of justice and wanting to help others.[2][5][8]

Espio the Chameleon

Espio also acts as a mentor to Charmy. The bee does not take as much fun in annoying Espio as he does Vector so he tends to leave him be. Espio respects Charmy well enough as a detective and the pair have a good working relationship. However, have been times where Charmy has acted equally as rebellious to Espio as he has to Vector.[2][8][10]
