The Charger[1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a mass-produced model of Destruction Troops created by Lyric the Last Ancient which use headbutts for offense.
Appearance[]
The Chargers are small dark golden robots resembling pachycephalosaurias with grey joints and yellow-green lights. They have a thick tail with a yellow-green spike at the tip, a long neck that glows yellow-green, small and thin arms with no digits, inverted legs with slipper-like feet, and an eye with a light purple slit-like iris and yellow-green sclera for a head. On their eye they have plating resembling a lower jaw with serrated teeth, and several large layers of forehead plating with small yellow-green spikes on top.
Overview[]
The Chargers were created by Lyric the Last Ancient about a millennium to help with his plans to destroy the earth's lifeforms and conquer it. When Lyric was imprisoned before finishing his plans, the Chargers were shut down.[2] However, Lyric left some of them behind to be found as a contingency plan so the finders would set him free to learn the Chargers' secrets.[3] When Lyric escaped in the present, he reactivated and/or reclaimed his Chargers to have them aid his schemes and battle Team Sonic.
The Chargers are not common enemies, but they frequently appear in groups of themselves. They are encountered in the Abandoned Research Facility, Cliff's Excavation Site, Ocean Purification Plant and Creeper Gorge. In gameplay, the Chargers assume a stance when spotting the playable characters and prepare to charge. Soon after, they will run towards the characters and attack with a spiky headbutt. Should their attacks connect, the Chargers will bounce back and stand still for a split-second, making them vulnerable to a counterattack. They have less health than Swordsman Troopers, making them fairly easy to take out. When defeated, a Charger releases a single Ring and a small amount of Robot Scrap.
After Team Sonic defeated Lyric, all the Chargers were subsequently scrapped.
Personality[]
The Charger are mindless and silent drones to their core and unwaveringly loyal to Lyric the Last Ancient, having been programmed to obey his every command.[2] Their loyalty is only superficial however, as the Chargers are just soulless machines adhering to their programing, meaning their allegiance can easily shift when someone else takes control of them.
Powers and abilities[]
As their name implies, the Chargers can perform powerful headbutts. They can also protrude spikes from their foreheads for more harmful impacts.
Variants[]
Charger Dart[]
The Charger Dart is a horned variant of the Charger that specializes in jumping at the opponent with their horns. However, they tend to leave their heads stuck in the ground. They have only appeared in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
Trivia[]
- The Chargers' name was not revealed in the final version of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. However, their name is listed in an unused biography for the game.[1]

"As seen in the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U games, Lyric is the last of his kind from an ancient civilization who lived a millennium ago. His race was devoted to peacefully controlling the world’s resources. Driven mad by power, Lyric turned on his fellow Ancients and took control of the resources. Building an army of robots programmed to obey his every command, the deadly snake-like villain set out to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. However, just before he could successfully take over, he was attacked by the last surviving Ancients and imprisoned forever. With his army shut down and his plans ruined, he waited in prison plotting his revenge. Years passed and Lyric began to give up hope. That is, until Sonic comes across him. Now with his army rebooted, and his plans in place, the only thing stopping Lyric from total victory is Sonic and his friends."
