Sonic Forces: Speed Battle features several characters from across the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Being soft launched in 2017 with just ten playable characters, the amount has expanded to 122 as of June 2025. The game includes characters from the mainline and spin-off games, the IDW Publishing comics, Sonic Prime, the live-action film series, among others.
Characters are divided into five categories based off their rarity: Common, Rare, Super Rare, Special, and Challenger. The player unlocks and upgrades characters by collecting Cards for them. Characters also have three different stats, being Speed, Strength, and Acceleration, as well as three power-up items to attack opponents and/or gain a burst of speed.
Overview[]
Characters are unlocked over time by collecting a certain number of Cards, found in Chests unlocked after matches, which may vary per rarity. Characters can be upgraded up to fifteen times to improve their performance in-game, although this also requires Cards, as well as Rings.
As of the version 5.3.0 update, an alternative method to upgrade characters called Power Cards was introduced, which can be obtained after purchasing their Chests or by completing Progression tasks. There is a Power Card for every rarity and an additional "Wild Card", which can be applied to all rarities. Each Power Card is equal to a single regular Card and can be stored to limited amounts (50 for Commons, 30 for Rares, 20 for Super Rares, and 10 for Specials, Challengers and Wild Cards). Any extra Power Cards past the limit can be converted to Rings.
The cost of unlocking and upgrading characters is based off their rarity. The five types of characters are as follows:
- Common: Identified by a blue background, they are often the first characters that the player will unlock. They are the cheapest to unlock and upgrade. They also have generic power-ups and no additional Starting Rings upon unlock. As of June 2025, only eight Common characters are available.
- Rare: Identified by an orange background, these characters are more expensive to unlock and upgrade than Common characters. They have an slightly higher amount of Starting Rings and some characters have power-ups based off their traits. As of June 2025, ten Rare characters are available.
- Super Rare: Identified by a purple background, these characters are much more expensive to unlock and upgrade than both Common and Rare characters. They have the highest amount of Starting Rings (along with Specials and Challengers) and one of their power-ups is already upgraded upon unlock. As of June 2025, eleven Super Rare characters are available.
- Special: Identified by a green background, these characters require the biggest amount of Rings in the game to upgrade them. Cards for Special characters are only obtained via events, the "Returning Runners" section in the Store (which requires Emeralds), Surprise Finds, or by using Power Cards. Special characters include variations of characters seen in the first three categories, transformations, characters from spin-offs and other media like the Sonic Storybook Series and Sonic Prime, and characters from other franchises. The first Special character was Witch Rouge, introduced in October 2018. As of June 2025, there are 74 Special characters.
- Challenger: Identified by a red background, these characters have an unique mode exclusive to them titled "Challenger Mode", which makes a bot-controlled version of a Challenger character appear in matches, giving out "Challenger Chests" if defeated. They require the biggest amount of Cards to unlock and upgrade in the game, which can only be obtained through events, or by using Power Cards. Challenger characters mostly consist of rivals and villains from across the franchise, and any variations they might have. The first Challenger character to be introduced was Infinite in November 2021. As of June 2025, there are 19 Challengers.
Each playable character has three stats, those being Speed (the highest speed the player can reach), Acceleration (how fast the player can reach top speed), and Strength (how much speed they lose when taking damage). Also, each character has three power-ups obtained at random from Item Boxes: Projectile Items are often launched directly in front of the player to damage opponents; Boost Items temporarily grant the player a burst of speed and other abilities; and Trap Items lay obstacles behind the player. In extremely rare cases, a character may have the same power-up as a Projectile and Trap Item. All three of these items are upgraded as the character levels up, including the chance for the player to obtain two or three of the same item from a single Item Box. Additionally, when the character is at a considerable distance from their rivals, they can use the Shield power-up, which takes over the slot for the Boost item, to protect themselves from damage (excluding characters that have the Super Form/Sol Transformation power-up as their Boost).

Chroma[]
Chroma is a feature that was introduced in the version 4.27.0 update. It allows players to customize the colors of certain characters. Each character with available Chroma skins has two of them, and they can be unlocked after purchasing them with Red Star Rings. Characters with available Chroma skins can be identified by an icon in the shape of a multicolored shirt that appears on the top right of their Card.
