The character selection screen in Sonic Dash as of 2025

Sonic Dash features several characters from across the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was released in 2013 with just four playable characters; that number has expanded to over 100 characters as of 2025. The game includes characters from the mainline and spin-off games, the IDW Publishing comics, Sonic Prime, the live-action film series, and even other brands such as Sanrio, Angry Birds, and Pac-Man.

Characters are divided into four categories based off their rarity: Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. The player unlocks and upgrades characters by collecting Cards for them. They also feature five different stats, which serve to improve their performance in-game.

Overview[]

Upgrades for Sonic Dash characters
Lvl. Cards required Rings required XP gained
2 1 100 4
3 5 200 6
4 10 400 8
5 20 800 10
6 40 1,600 15
7 80 4,000 20
8 100 8,000 30
9 150 16,000 40
10 200 25,000 55
11 250 40,000 70
12 300 60,000 85
13 400 80,000 100

Currently, characters are unlocked over time by collecting Cards, the number of which depends on the character's rarity. Each character has their own type of Cards–meaning that Cards for Classic Sonic are only used for that character, for example–which can be found in the track, by performing Trick Actions, and in Missions. Once unlocked, every character can be upgraded upwards of twelve times, with each upgrade increasing all five stats for the character and rewarding XP for the player's Level. Each stat determines the duration of the Dash Boost and certain power-ups like the Magnet and Shield. Upgrading characters requires Cards and Rings, although the amount of which does not change across rarities.

Cards for most characters can only be obtained in Trick sequences after reaching the required Level to unlock them. Cards to unlock holiday-based or crossover characters can be obtained exclusively through Events. Once the player has unlocked them, they will be able to get their Cards during Trick sequences.

The only differences between the four rarities are the amount of Cards needed for unlock and the frequency they can spawn. All of them require the exact same amount of Cards to upgrade. The four types of characters are as follows:

  • Common: Identified by a blue background, they are usually the first characters that the player will unlock. They require 50 Cards to unlock. Currently, there are 17 Common characters.
  • Rare: Identified by a green background, these characters require 100 Cards to unlock. Currently, there are 22 Rare characters.
  • Epic: Identified by a yellow background, these characters require 250 Cards to unlock. Currently, there are 30 Epic characters.
  • Legendary: Identified by a purple background, these characters require 500 Cards to unlock. This rarity also features characters from other brands. Currently, there are 47 Legendary characters.

The method to unlock characters has had several changes over the years. Since its release up to version 6.7.0, characters could be unlocked after obtaining a certain amount of Character Tokens (some could be purchased with either Red Star Rings or real money), and upgrading them only required Rings. All stats had to be upgraded separately, each one having a different amount of upgrades.

As of the version 7.0.0 update, the Card system was introduced, which also has had some changes since its introduction. Each rarity had a different amount of upgrade costs, and Cards for Legendary characters could only be obtained through events. In the version 8.3.0 update, the system was tweaked to unify all stat upgrades and introduce the current Level system.
