Character Insights - The Zone Cops[note 1][1] was a short story published on the now-defunct Archie Comics Sonic Universe blog, written by Ian Flynn. Presented as a transcript between Zonic the Zone Cop and Zally Zacorn, it takes place shortly after Sonic Universe #21's beginning flashback. The story is mostly composed of text, but occasionally includes reused panels from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series to relate to the subject. It was published on 4 November 2010.
Entries[]
- OFFICER ZONIC: You wanted to see me, captain?
- CAPTAIN ZALLY ZACORN: I did. I won't keep you long. I know things are tight right now.
- ZONIC: You don't know the half of it. A couple of patrolmen managed to chase Nega out of the Prime Zone before he even knew where he was.
- ZALLY: What?! Has that been logged?
- ZONIC: I just happened to hear it off the dispatch. I'm . . . I'm not sure if the patrolmen are still with us.
- [several seconds of silence]
- ZALLY: That makes this meeting all the more important. Is the Cosmic Interstate not currently in full lockdown?
- ZONIC: Yes ma'am. We're enforcing that as best we can.
- ZALLY: Are you enforcing it the best YOU can, officer?
- ZONIC: . . . ma'am?
- ZALLY: I have a report here stating you were alerted to a breach from Zone Code: Beta-Lambda-Zeta and told the officers under you to disregard it.
- ZONIC: Beta-Lambda-Zeta . . . do we have that world's native name on file?
- ZALLY: A number of our records are spotty thanks to Dr. Nega's raids. You're avoiding the question.
- ZONIC: Who tattled on me? Was it Zantoine? I bet it was Zantoine . . .
- ZALLY: Zonic!
- ZONIC: Okay, okay. Yes, I ordered my men to look the other way.
- ZALLY: And that doesn't seem the least bit dangerous, irresponsible, or stupid to you?
- ZONIC: Beta-Lambda-Zeta is still fairly open for interdimensional stability issues. The breach was made by Princess Blaze the Cat, who is searching for the Sol Emeralds native to her world. Emeralds, I should add, that are crucial to her world's stability.
- ZALLY: And if it wasn't for this war, we would be helping her. But we can't . . .
- ZONIC: Dr. Nega is also looking for the Sol Emeralds. Blaze has a good rapport with Sonic-Prime. If Blaze succeeds, which is likely given her association with Sonic-Prime, that will significantly weaken Dr. Nega's plans.
- ZALLY: And you think that justifies this act of insubordination.
- ZONIC: Am I wrong?
- [another silent period]
- ZALLY: I can't just ignore this. If I don't maintain our rules, we're going to fall apart.
- ZONIC: I understand that, ma'am. I was prepared for the consequences when I made my decision.
- ZALLY: You better be. Lucky for you I'm swamped with reports and this reprimand got lost in the shuffle for now.
- ZONIC: Lucky for me. So . . . does that make this a social visit?
- ZALLY: Get back to work, officer.
- ZONIC: Yes ma'am. Thank you ma'am.
