The Chaotix are on the case!

Vector the Crocodile, Sonic the Hedgehog #283

The Chaotix, also referred to as Team Chaotix,[1] is a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are a trio of detectives consisting of Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee who run the Chaotix Detective Agency.[2] Though not as involved in the ongoing world-spanning conflicts as the Freedom Fighters are, the Chaotix are nonetheless a competent trio when the need arises, and are always ready to lend a hand in the face of danger.

As a group, the Chaotix have been on a number of adventures together, which include facing the monstrous Metal Overlord and meeting Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. They are also frequent allies of Knuckles the Echidna, having first worked with him to battle Dr. Eggman alongside Mighty.[3][4][5]

When the Black Arms descended upon Sonic's World, the Chaotix worked with most of their friends and G.U.N.'s forces to repel the invasion of the planet. After finding top secret military information disks, the Chaotix eventually boarded the Space Colony ARK, where they raced to hack the data disks. After finally getting inside, Charmy activated a film showing a sane Gerald Robotnik, who told Shadow that he was the only one who could save the planet from the Black Arms and how to do it, giving Shadow the inspiration he needed to overcome Black Doom.[6]

Sometime later, Chaotix attended a celebration of Sonic's birthday, only to be ambushed and trapped in a white limbo, courtesy of the sinister Time Eater. Fortunately, they were rescued by Sonic and his younger self.[7]

Worlds Collide

Note: Due to the Genesis Wave, the Chaotix's history from this point were changed to be nearly identical to that of its game counterpart's.

After the world had once again been reset by Dr. Eggman's second Genesis Wave, the Chaotix aided Sonic in searching for Tails, Amy and Knuckles, who had all recently vanished, when they where apprehended by Copy Robot and captured to be turned into Roboticized Masters by Dr. Eggman and his new partner Dr. Wily.[8]

Now under the control of the two doctors as the Roboticized Masters Vector Man, Espio Man and Charmy Man, the trio were sent to destroy Sonic and Tails, along with their new friends Mega Man and Proto Man in the Skull Egg Zone.[9] However, the combined efforts of Sonic, Mega Man, and Tails found the trio restored to normal, and in gratitude they set out to assist Proto Man in his efforts to save Dr. Light.[10][11]

Once the rest of Sonic's friends had been saved, the Chaotix took part in the final battle against the horde of time-cloned Robot Masters below the Wily Egg. The battle raged on until the launch of the Super Genesis Wave, which restored the Chaotix's world into a unstable state after Super Sonic's attempt to reverse the wave was met with interference by Eggman.[12][13][14][15]

Shattered World Crisis

Note: From the readers point of view, this picks up from where the Chaotix's original timeline ended.

Act One

After the beginning of the Shattered World Crisis, the trio were hired by Princess Sally to search for the Chaos Emeralds, which where vital in restoring the world to normal. Their assignment took them to the Pumpkin Hill Zone, where they aided Knuckles in fighting off a force of Dark Gaia Creatures. Afterwards, Knuckles agreed to aid the them in search for an Emerald that was in the area. Unfortunately, they soon ran afoul of mercenaries hired by Dr. Eggman for the same mission: the Hooligans.[5] After a brief battle that ended when both sides realized that neither had the Chaos Emerald both had detected in the area, the Chaotix and Knuckles entered Aquatic Mine Zone, where they found the gemstone and Light Gaia.[16] Another encounter with the Hooligans and the monstrous Dark Gaia Titan nearly resulted in catastrophe, but the Chaotix succeeded in reclaiming the Emerald and fooling their competition. At Knuckles' suggestion, they gave him the Chaos Emerald for safe-keeping and continued on their mission.[17][18]

The Chaotix later sent Espio the Chameleon to Casino Park to investigate the Chaos Emerald Championship, and he arranged for Knuckles to be added to the roster for the tournament.[19] Espio eventually lost to Bean, much to the chagrin of his fellow detectives.[20]

Act Two

The Chaotix were later contacted by Sonic and Sally to discuss a plan to stage a worldwide assault on the Eggman Empire, to which the former agreed to participate in.[21] Later, the Chaotix saw the restoration of the world.[22]

The Case of the Pirate Princess

At some point after the world was restored, the Chaotix met Echo the Dolphin of the Meropis City Guard, who needed help search for the missing Princess Undina. Echo would supply her, Vector, Espio, and Charmy's means of transportation: a car capable of travel above and under water. Their trip went relatively smoothly, save for some bickering, until Echo inadvertently bumped into Razor the Shark and his Chao, Crusher, resulting in a brief scuffle erupting. After being calmed, Razor explained that he, too, was out to look for Princess Undina, having been sent by his friend Coral. An argument nearly erupted between the two, after which a massive submarine appeared before them. Before the Chaotix could flee, however, they were captured and brought onto a deck, where they met the pirate crew and Princess Undina herself.[23]

On the pirate ship, the Chaotix and Razor, revealed to be a former member of the crew, realized they were at a disadvantage and quickly changed their approach, requesting to join the pirate gang, while Lieutenant Echo got taken hostage and locked up. Thus, the Chaotix were introduced to the Pirates of the Setting Dawn: Captain Shellbreaker, Mr. Bristles, Opal, Dive and Blade. The Chaotix soon learned that the captain decided against ransoming Princess Undina back to Meropis thanks to her handy ability to translate ancient sea charts, leading the crew on treasure hunts while also making sure they would not resort to more kidnapping. Tagging along to the interiors of the ship, Vector learned its control system had to be accessed with a key in the captain's possession and started forming a plan.[2]

However, in the constant presence of the pirates, the detectives had a difficult time in communicating with each other, and almost were caught by Razor's sister Blade before Undina deflected the situation by bringing up Espio's loss against Bean in the Chaos Emerald Championship. Despite his embarrassment, the Chaotix soon had Espio use his camouflage to sneak into Lieutenant Echo's holding chamber to prepare her for their escape. Upon arriving on the island the pirates traversed through a forest while the Chaotix left a trail back to the ship, and eventually they stumbled upon a grave site, which Undina deciphered to contain an ancient, dangerous weapon.[24]

Despite Undina's protests, Captain Shellbreaker insisted on raiding the tomb, and had the princess open the sealed door using her Mystic Melody. As it turned out, the site had already been emptied, only containing a damaged glass sphere and an epitaph of a deceased hero. Just in time, Echo finally rejoined the Chaotix and Razor, setting their escape plan in motion. Charmy took matters in his own hands and yanked the key from the captain, starting a fight between the two groups. In the ensuing chaos, the Chaotix started their escape and futilely tried to lock the pirates into the grave site before running for the ship. To Vector's shock, the ship's control board requested a password, but luckily Undina had watched Shellbreaker and was able to help out. As the group celebrated, Undina announced she would not return home but keep but keep traveling the seas with Lieutenant Echo as her personal guard, but ensured the Chaotix would still get their reward.[25]

Back in Westopolis, the three detectives visited a bank to exchange their Meropan Sand Dollars and started bantering about their plans with the money, but were immediately disillusioned when the exchange rate left them with nothing but pocket money. Returning home, the Chaotix were still left happy they fulfilled the Chaotix Detective Agency's main purpose - to help out someone in need.[25]
