Chaos powers,[1] also known as Chaos Actions,[2] are a type of power that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are abilities to manipulate Chaos Emerald energy in various ways, including distorting space with Chaos Control to form the powers' functions. Generally, users need at least one Chaos Emerald to access chaos powers.
List of chaos powers[]
Name | First appearance | Description | User(s) | Image |
---|---|---|---|---|
??? (Shadow) | Sonic Battle | A variation of Chaos Burst/Air C. Burst, where the user briefly appears in three spots at once. All three versions of the user will simultaneously use Chaos Burst and then emerge as one again via disappearing as clones/afterimages. | ||
Air C. Burst | Sonic Battle | Mid-air version of Chaos Burst. The user, while in mid-air, uses Chaos Control to hide in distorted space, before reappearing and attacking opponents with an aura of energy. | ||
Air C. Magic | Sonic Battle | An airborne variant of Chaos Magic, the user snaps their fingers while airborne, utilizing Chaos Control to create a damaging distorted space. | ||
Air R. Chaos | Sonic Battle | An airborne version of Roaming Chaos, using Chaos Control, the user creates a distorted space orb while in the air that acts as a trap against opponents. | ||
Arrow of Light | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | Only usable while in a Super State, the user charges forward to the enemy at high-speed. A fully charged version allows the user to move at a faster speed and immerses them in a blue light. Similar to, if not the same, as the Super Sonic Boost. | ||
Atomic Spin | Sonic Generations | Only usable while in a Super State. This is an enhanced version of the Spin Attack. | ||
Bolt of lightning | Sonic Adventure | Only usable while in a Super State. When the user gains enough speed, they transform into something one may describe as a "bolt of lightning". | ||
C. Nightmare | Sonic Battle | The user distorts space with their fists and blasts opponents away with it. | ||
Chaos Attack | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | A move that, after a Homing Attack, levitates the user in front of the enemy, letting them do up to five enhanced punches and kicks, each blow a bit more powerful than the last. | ||
Chaos Blast | Shadow the Hedgehog | A very powerful explosion that decimates all within a 10-20 yard radius. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, it is channeled into a focused beam of Chaos Emerald energy shot from the users' hands. | ||
Chaos Boost | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | The user temporarily charges up with Chaos Emerald energy, giving them a red aura, which alternates to a red-whitish aura. This allows invulnerability to average attacks, and allows use of more advanced techniques, such as Chaos Snap, Chaos Lance, and Chaos Blast. It can also reverse evil influence, such as forcing Mephiles out of Shadow's shadow and forcing Mephiles' shadow creatures out of the floor. | ||
Chaos Boost (Mario & Sonic) | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games | The user floats in the air and a red energy will surround them. This grants the user an instantaneous speed boost before they then slow down and fall back to the floor. However, it can only be used during certain events. | ||
Chaos Burst | Sonic Battle | The user distorts space, and goes on to hide within that space in order to avoid attacks before reappearing and attacking with an aura. | ||
Chaos Charge | Sonic Forces: Speed Battle | The user gets surrounded in a blue fiery aura and flies at an incredible speed. | ||
Chaos Control | Sonic Adventure 2 | The user manipulates space and time, allowing them to teleport, slow down time, and even time travel. This technique can be used in many offensive maneuvers, and forms the basis of many other Chaos powers by manipulating time and space in other ways. | ||
Chaos Chord | Sonic Forces: Speed Battle | The use releases the notes that float around the user, then launch forward down the track. | ||
Chaos Lance | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | An upgraded version of Chaos Spear, stunning enemies and damaging them, doing more damage than normal by exploding. In essence, a combination of the Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) Chaos Spear variations. | ||
Chaos Magic | Sonic Battle | A distorted space is created using Chaos Control by snapping one's fingers to damage foes with it. | ||
Chaos Snap | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | The user is instantly teleported to nearby enemies and attacks with a Chaos Attack, up to five enemies in a chain of attacks. | ||
Chaos Spear | Sonic Adventure 2 | The user fires spear-shaped bolts of Chaos Emerald energy at opponents. | ||
Chaos Punishment | Sonic and the Black Knight | A variation of Chaos Snap that works the same way, but when attacking, time is stopped. Sir Lancelot was also seen combining this technique with Chaos Blast when using Ddraig Goch. | ||
Chaos Rift | Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood | The user creates a sphere that is thrown to the opponent. Upon touching someone, it immediately seems to send them into space, or if it fails, it makes them dizzy instead. | ||
Chaos Slash | Sonic Forces: Speed Battle | The user creates a red slash with Arondight and follows it up with a Chaos Spear | ||
Chaos Upper | Sonic Battle | The user distorts space with a single fist, striking an opponent to launch them into the air. | ||
Deflect | Sonic Rush Adventure | Only usable when in a Super State. The user creates an arc of blue energy that deflects projectiles and sends towards an opponent. When fully charged, it creates a larger arc of energy. | ||
Dual Chaos Control | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | Only useable if there are two users. The users harness Chaos energy to perform an alternate version of Chaos Control. | ||
Hyper Flash | Sonic 3 & Knuckles | The user creates a blinding flash that destroys everything around them and flings them into a certain direction. | ||
Knuckles' All-Star Move | Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing | The user harnesses the power of the Master Emerald in order to create a blast of energy akin to that of Chaos Blast. | ||
Overload | Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood | Only usable while in a Super State. The user unleashes a blast of black energy akin to that of Chaos Blast. | ||
Perfect Parry | Sonic Frontiers | Only usable while in a Super State. A variation of the Parry used during the Master King's Trial and the final fight between Super Sonic 2 and The End. It has a minuscule window to Parry an attack and is considerably more powerful when used by Super Sonic 2. | ||
Roaming Chaos | Sonic Battle | The user creates an orb of distorted space using Chaos Control that acts as a trap. | ||
S. Teleport | Sonic Battle | The user teleports using Chaos Control. | ||
Shadow Dash | Sonic Battle | The user utilizes Chaos Control to warp forward while moving at a high speed. | ||
Shadow Heal | Sonic Battle | The user utilizes Chaos Control to heal themselves. | ||
Shield of Light | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | Only usable while in a Super State and to those with Psychokinesis. The user creates a large shield of green, psychokinetic/chaos-enhanced energy that captures anything caught in its radius. Anything caught in the radius can then be thrown at opponents. | ||
Spear of Light | Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) | An augmented version of Chaos Lance only usable whilst in Super State. The user fires red bolts of energy which home into the opponent. A fully charged Spear of Light can fire eight bolts simultaneously in a circular pattern, and does more damage. | ||
Super Sonic Power | Sonic Heroes | Only usable while there are three users in a Super State. It is an offensive ability where three Super form users deliver a barrage of powerful semi-Homing Attack. | ||
Super Sonic Boost | Sonic Adventure 2 | Only usable while in a Super State. An augmented and more powerful version of the Boost. | ||

Sonic X[]
In the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics, a few well-known chaos powers made appearances, such as Chaos Control and Chaos Spear. Such moves were mainly used by Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog and their respective Super forms, Super Sonic and Super Shadow.
In "So Long Sonic", Super Sonic and Super Shadow displayed a unique technique called "Chaos Regeneration" (Japanese version only, the English version never mentioned the name) to save Cosmo, their plant-type anthropomorphic ally, from certain death. As demonstrated in the episode, it is not quite as effective as its title would suggest, because all they managed to produce from their efforts was a small seed.
Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
Various chaos powers have appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, where a wider array of characters possess the capacity to utilize Chaos energy. At their most basic, these techniques include lightning bolts, force fields and teleportation. More advanced wielders, such as Mammoth Mogul or Enerjak can achieve mind control and molecular dissection. The teleportation ability appears to be a subtly different form of Chaos Control.
All chaos powers in this continuity come from the greatest power in the universe, the Chaos Force, a mystical energy field that serves as wellspring for all chaos powers.
