Chaos Island (カオス島 Kaosu-tō?) is the fifth and penultimate stage in Shadow Generations. It is based on the location of the same name from Sonic Frontiers.

Description[]

A mostly gray environment with landscapes of stone, and the ancient temples from the Sonic Frontiers version of the location. Chaos Island is set in the day with a partly cloudy sky, there's also a mix of coast line cliffs and in Act 2 there are the hot springs from the original island. The underground sections from Sonic Frontiers also make an appearance in the second act.

Story[]

After Shadow is granted the Doom Morph Power by Black Doom, Chaos Island located in White Space appears next to the Space Colony ARK stage area. Shadow must run through Chaos Island in order to face the last boss before the final one. Once Shadow runs through the whole stage, he battles Sonic while holding back on his Doom Powers, to lose and give Sonic the Fake Emerald. He meets up with Rouge who admires what Shadow did with the Emerald as he explains the plan to swap the fake for the real one when Sonic is getting ready to face the Time Eater.

Gameplay[]

Chaos Island is a linear take on the island featured in Sonic Frontiers. Instead of sharing a similar appearance to how they look in Sonic Generations, objects such as springs and grind rails retain their look from Sonic Frontiers. Doom Morph is used at multiple points throughout both acts, often allowing Shadow to traverse through surfaces infused with corruption. Many sights from the island can also be spotted throughout each act, such as a lone Assault-model Death Egg Robot and the active volcano.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

A fully linear 3D take on the original location from Sonic Frontiers. The stage immediately begins with a close up shot of Shadow dashing down a slope where he is launched off of a dash panel into the air soon after. This brings him to three rows of platforms suspended in the air, with the outer two reaching out farther, and the middle set which gets cut short. In front of these platforms, a Rainbow Ring hovers, which can be reached with enough speed and a well timed jump and boost through the air. After this opening, Shadow lands on a ledge in which he can use Doom Morph to swiftly dash across the corruption. Morph Balls float over pits, with one being to the right off the ledge. By swinging and launching upwards, Shadow can reach a higher portion of the stage. On the first main section of the island, Shadow can fire a Doom Spear at a lantern in order to make more platforms appear. A shortcut diverging from the main route can be reached by using the Morph Balls seen to the left. Shadow then traverses upwards chaining off of balloons, Soldiers and a zip line, in which he grabs another zip line to reach the next section of the island. Shadow is presented with a higher and low route, each requiring platforming using Doom Morph. Next, Shadow is launched through the air off of a dash panel to reach the next section where he can traverse along a wall with Doom Morph, then ascend upwards to pass through a loop. At the end of the loop, a dash panel sends him soaring through the air over cliffs to reach the next obstacle. Shadow can go left and freeze the Cyclone to take a pulley upwards, or platform across the path to the right, each of which take him to a spring and a corridor covered with corruption which he can speed across with Doom Morph. Shadow will then either use Doom Morph to swing and swim on the hovering Morph Balls and platforms, or climb up the path below. He then goes through a tunnel and grinds across rails suspended in the air to reach a hallway and an open area inside the ruins. After making it out of the ruins, Shadow will need to platform over the volcano's lava. Afterwards, Shadow ascends upwards on rails, springs and Rainbow Rings. Two Morph Balls float in the air which Shadow can use to swing safely to the goal.

Act 2[]

A fully linear 2D take of the island. Shadow immediately starts off by dashing up a loop, where he is presented with boulders which drop from the background which he must avoid whilst platforming over gaps in the ground. He can then either go straight down and pass by dash panels or hop over the bottom path to get by faster. He then passes over rails and takes out Soldiers and avoids boulders before having to climb vertically left and right whilst boulders roll down the slopes. Shadow then moves underground where he can find Morph Balls and swim up surfaces using Doom Morph. Traveling deeper underground, Doom Morph is featured more often, and circle-shaped surfaces suspended in midair appear for Shadow to swim around and launch off of. He must then precisely avoid the iron balls using gondolas. In the next section, the bottom path holds falling platforms, whilst the upper path has Morph Balls which Shadow can use to swim across before going up and taking a grind rail down. Shadow once again must avoid iron balls whilst riding on gondolas. He must then avoid boulders and iron balls before taking a dash panel which sends him towards some springs which launch Shadow up and back to the surface where the goal awaits him.

White Space[]

The area in White Space is found atop a steep stone cliff that must be climbed used using Doom Morph. The surrounding environment features arches, pillars, and other ruins identical to the ones seen throughout areas formerly inhabited by the Ancients in Sonic Frontiers, as well as Chaos Island's distinctive gray stone look once fully restored. The platforms, rails, springs, buttons, dash rings, and pulleys are modeled after the ones found in Sonic Frontiers, and activating any of the buttons in the area will make a short platforming challenge highly reminiscent of the ones found in Sonic Frontiers's Open Zones appear, each leading to a Collection Box. Before the challenge gates are passed, all of the environment surrounding the stage entrance is washed of color. In the larger White Space environment, it is located in the lower-left corner of the map, to the west of Sunset Heights and almost directly south of the Space Colony ARK.

Trivia[]

  • Chaos Island is the only stage in Shadow Generations that Shadow was never playable in from the original game.
    • Between Sonic Generations, its Nintendo 3DS version, and Shadow Generations, Chaos Island is the second stage where the playable character was never playable in the original stage, the first being Radical Highway in the 3DS version.
    • Furthermore, Chaos Island is the only stage in any of the three games where the playable character is completely absent from its original game.
      • However, the fact he goes here during the events of Shadow Generations may explain why there are areas in Cyber Space based on Radical Highway and Sky Rail by the time of Sonic Frontiers, two areas that Sonic never goes to but Shadow does. Despite this, the stages that use them, 2-4 and 2-6, respectively, are located on Ares Island.
      • Despite Shadow not being present in Sonic Frontiers, Chaos Island is the only island where Sonic mentions Shadow in one of his idle lines.
  • Shadow's time on Chaos Island is revealed to occur simultaneously with the events of Sonic Frontiers, as the eruption of the volcano is triggered by Sonic's completion of the Pinball Island Mystery.
    • However, Knight is never shown once in the act, even though it would appear after the eruption.
    • This confirms that Sonic canonically fought Knight during the day.
  • This is the second stage in Shadow Generations whose original game released after Sonic Generations, with the first being Sunset Heights.
  • Unlike other stages, stage elements like Springs, Pulleys, and Balloons use their designs and color schemes from Sonic Frontiers, rather than their traditional designs.
  • This is one of the two stages that Black Doom does not interfere mid-stage, the other one being Kingdom Valley.
  • This is the only stage that features enemies that aren't from G.U.N., the Eggman Empire, or the Black Arms.
  • Act 1 is a remix of "Chaos Island: 2nd Mvt." and "Chaos Island: 3rd Mvt.", Act 2 is a remix of "Chaos Island: 2nd Mvt." and "Chaos Island: 3rd Mvt." with the intro featuring elements of "Chaos Island: 6th Mvt." and "Chaos Island: 7th Mvt.", and the Gate is a remix of "Chaos Island: 3rd Mvt.".
