The Chaos Emerald[1] (ワープゲート[2],Wāpugēto?, lit. "Warp Gate"), also known as the Special Monitor,[3] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an Item Box power-up depicting a Chaos Emerald that has had different uses.
In gameplay, the Chaos Emerald Item Boxes appear in the first two Acts of the first five Zones. If the player breaks a Chaos Emerald while carrying fifty Rings or more, it will open a Star Circle above itself that leads into one of the Special Stage where a Chaos Emerald can be earned. After a Chaos Emerald has been used, a Super Ring Item Box appears in its place after the player exits the Special Stage. However, if the player does not have fifty Rings when opening a Chaos Emerald Item Box, nothing will happen.
In gameplay, the Chaos Emeralds are Item Boxes that can only be added using Debug Mode. When broken, the Chaos Emerald will play the sound effect played when Sonic transforms into Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit), and will toggle the player's Chaos Emerald count from six, seven, and then zero.
