The Chao Guardians take the form of a neutral Chao with flower petals surrounding it, both as an icon and on the tracks.
In gameplay, the Chao Guardians can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Tikal. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Chao Guardians if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned user.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Chao Guardians by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose a neutral Chao that travels down the lane they were deployed on in front of the user. After flying down the lane for a moment though, the Chao will ricochet in the opposite direction on the lane they are on. Opponents caught in the path of the Chao Guardians will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. In addition, the Chao Guardians can travel through obstacles and will continue moving after hitting rival characters. To avoid the Chao Guardians, the playable character has to step out of its lane.
The Chao Guardians can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. For each upgrade, the player will get the chance to obtain more Chao Guardians to use in the Projectile Item slot from a single Item Box; at level 6, there is a chance of getting two Chao Guardians, and at level 12, there is a chance of getting three Chao Guardians.
