Chao Eggs are objects from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are eggs which are hatched for the Chao Gardens in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

Description

Chao Eggs are large eggs, the color of which will determine the skin color of the Chao that will hatch from them. The most common are Neutral Chao eggs, which are white eggs with blue spots and yellowish tips. Colored eggs are less common.

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure, and its remake Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the Chao Eggs make their debut along with the Chao. They are used to give birth to Chao in the different Chao Gardens of the game. When starting a game and entering a Chao Garden for the first time, the player will receive two Chao Eggs for free. Other eggs can be obtained in a number of ways, including the following:

  • Buying: The fastest method of obtaining Chao Eggs, requiring the player to sacrifice Rings for which they will buy an egg. These eggs can be purchased at the Black Market. The color and type of eggs available for purchase will change based on the emblems the player earns.
  • Capturing: The player can find three different Chao Eggs hidden in Station Square (golden egg), the Mystic Ruins (solid egg) and the Egg Carrier (black egg).
  • Breeding: When it comes time for Chao's mating season (this can be seen when a given Chao begins to surround itself with a circle of flowers), the player can combine two different individuals to give a new Chao Egg. The color of the egg will depend on the skin color of its parents.

When a Chao Egg is broken, the player can give its half shell to a Chao and, if they like it, they will use it as a headgear.

The costs of the Chao Eggs in the Black Market are as follows:

Color Price
White Egg 400 Rings
Pink Egg 600 Rings
Yellow Egg 500 Rings
Red Egg 500 Rings
Gray Egg 1,000 Rings
Orange Egg 800 Rings
Blue Egg 500 Rings
Green Egg 600 Rings
Black Egg 2,000 Rings
Lime Green Egg 1,500 Rings

In Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the players can transfer the Chao Eggs they have obtained to the Tiny Chao Garden from the Sonic Advance series and Sonic Pinball Party and vice versa.

Sonic Adventure 2

In Sonic Adventure 2, and its remake Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Chao Eggs reappear. They have the same role as in Sonic Adventure. Like in that game, the player can get two free Chao Eggs by entering a Chao Garden for the first time in a game. Also, the player can get more by buying them in the Black Market (with the same price as in the previous game) or by pairing two Chao.

When a Chao Egg is broken, the player can give the shell to a Chao and, if it likes it, it will use it as a headgear.

In Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the players can transfer the Chao Eggs they have obtained to the Tiny Chao Garden from the Sonic Advance series and Sonic Pinball Party and vice versa.

Sonic Runners

In 'Sonic Runners', the Chao Eggs re-appear. They can be obtained if the player successfully passes the final boss of a chapter, which will give them one. Accumulating ten will give the player a golden ticket that can be used in the Premium Roulette. Chao Eggs appear there as well, and will give the player a random buddy (or level it up if they already has it).

Trivia

  • In Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and their respective remakes, the Black Egg is the most expensive non-shiny egg a player can buy. The second being the Lime Green Egg and the third being the Gray Egg.
  • In Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and their respective remakes, the Chao Eggs' shells will give the Chao some additional resistance in the Chao Karate if they have it in their heads. In addition, the shell cannot be removed from the head unless the player throws/knocks the Chao, which will make it dislike its owner a bit.
  • Colored Chao (such as a Green Chao from the Black Market) cannot change their colored appearance. They will stay at the same color regardless of alignment or type.
