The {{Nihongo|'''Chao'''<ref group="note">Written in singular and plural. Also rarely pluralized as "Chao's".</ref>|チャオ|Chao}} are creatures that appear in the [[Sonic the Hedgehog series|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series]]. They are a mystical species inhabiting various areas of [[earth]].
The {{Nihongo|'''Chao'''|チャオ}} are a species from the [[Sonic the Hedgehog series|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series]]. Their role in the games are to be raised by the player in mini-games, similar to many virtual pets. Chao are somewhat complex: they respond to stimuli, have moods, require food and can be loving or fearful. The word ''Chao'' is a pun on ''Chaos'', a word commonly used in the ''Sonic'' series and which is why the word remains unchanged when plural. The Chao are the good friends of [[Cream the Rabbit]] and [[Tikal]].

Making their first appearance in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' for the [[Dreamcast]] (both in the plot and in a Chao-raising aspect of the game) and later in ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'', Chao have recently come to be a large part of the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' franchise. Chao-raising and the main ''Sonic'' games tie together in a number of ways; items which are encountered in the main game can be used to raise Chao, collected Rings can be used to buy things for them, and several unlockable features are related to Chao. During raising, Chao have statistics: Swimming, Flying, Running, Power and Stamina, as well as a number of other properties which aren't quite as obvious. These statistics can be raised through proper raising, and will enable a Chao to do better in their competitions: [[Chao Racing]] and [[Chao Karate]]. Eggs other than those acquired in visiting a Chao Garden for the first time or mating are colored differently and reflect how the Chao will look. For example, a Gold Egg is solid gold in color and will hatch a solid [[Gold Chao]]. Ways of hatching them include snuggling the egg (the kindest way), throwing the egg at a wall (the Chao will obviously not like this) and of course, simply waiting for the egg to hatch on its own. When they hatch, they can be trained to have different attributes and emotional states. The Chao from ''Sonic Adventure 2'', ''[[Sonic Adventure 2: Battle]]'' and ''[[Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut]]'' can also favor "dark" and "hero" sides as well as the default "neutral" side which can lead to variations in visual evolution. Depending on the game, they take varying times to evolve.

While there is not a defined appearance for Chao, most of them share various common features. Described as cute,<ref name="BrawlProfile">{{Cite game|dev=Sora Ltd.|date=9 March 2008|game=Super Smash Bros. In general, Chao have round, waterdrop-like heads with large eyes but no noses, round torsos smaller than their heads, smooth feet with no legs, and arms with no visible hands. Neither their arms or feet have digits. They also have a short tail, small wings, and a floating dot above their heads. It has been noted that, when they grow up, Chao do not show many differences compared to younger Chao.<ref name="DoctorChao"/>
After one Chao year has passed (about two to three hours for GameCube versions, an hour for Dreamcast), a Chao creates a cocoon and evolve into a more mature form. It will mature into a form that relates to the last stat item it has influenced (running, swimming, power, flying or stamina) and its alignment. During this evolution, a Chao raises one grade up in the level of its type, e.g. a swimming Chao who has a grade 'B' in swimming becomes an 'A'.

Like [[human]]s and other anthropomorphic animals, Chao are highly social and sapient creatures, have very flexible facial expressions, and possess self-awareness. They also behave closely like human infants, and possess delightful, pleasant, and lively mannerisms,<ref name="BrawlProfile"/><ref name="SonicComicChao">{{Cite web |author=[[Sega]] |date=2 December 2016 |url=https://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannel/special/comic/25th/20161202_001245/ |title=Act:023 ?!♥ |publisher=[[Sonic Channel]] |accessdate=22 June 2022}}</ref> getting delighted when their owners pat or embrace them gently, or simply carry them around.<ref name="DoctorChao"/><ref name="DXChaoBehavior">{{Cite game|dev=[[Sonic Team]]|date=14 September 2004|game=Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut|system=PC|publisher=[[Sega]]|area=[[Station Square Garden]]|quote='''Caring for Chao''': Chao like to be petted and carried around. Alignment is determined by how the Chao was treated before its evolution, and the three alignments are '''Dark''', '''Hero''', and '''Neutral'''. There are three Hero characters (Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails) and three Dark characters (Shadow, Rouge, and Dr. Eggman) in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. Petting, holding (in which case if you have separated the characters alignment it will make it worse), or cuddling a Chao with a character makes the Chao favor the character's alignment. Attacking, throwing, stepping on a Chao, or taking its food while it is eating makes it favor the opposite alignment of the character (this also applies if the Chao attempts to eat fruit that it dislikes). Every three times that a heart appears above a Chao's head and replaces the standard emotion, the Chao darkens or lightens a shade, a darker shade coinciding with becoming a Dark Chao, and vice versa; the Chao darkens or lightens a shade every time a heart appears above the Chao's head once when it's petted. A Chao's physical appearance is the chief indicator in understanding the alignment of a Chao. Dark Chao have leathery wings and a devil's tail, and are colored black, brown, and pink with a small spike ball on its head. It also has a symbol on its chest similar to [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]]'. Hero Chao have feathery wings, a split tail, and a small halo on its head. They are colored white, blue, and gold. Neutral Chao are created by balancing contact by both Hero and Dark characters, or not paying attention to them. They are able to look like a lot of different characters. In ''[[Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut]]'', due to only heroic characters being playable, the Chao instead become Hero or Dark depending on the alignment fruits it is given. The alignment feature was nonexistent in the Dreamcast version of ''Sonic Adventure''.

  +
Chao live in certain areas of [[earth]], known as the [[Chao Garden]]s. These gardens are paradise for Chao,<ref name="DoctorChao"/> and have a nice, clean and shallow pool for them and palm trees with the fruit they eat. Nevertheless, various Chao have demonstrated that they can live in other environments, as long as these have pools of fresh water.<ref name="BrawlProfile"/> The best-known case of this is [[Cheese]], who lives with [[Cream the Rabbit]] and her family. Conversely, Chao dislike dried out places like [[Sandopolis]],<ref>{{Cite game|dev=[[Sumo Digital]]|date=21 May 2019|game=Team Sonic Racing|system=PlayStation 4|pub=[[Sega]]|area=[[Boo's House]]|quote='''[[Omochao]]''': Chao don't like dried out places.}}</ref> and are also scared of [[Doctor Eggman|Dr. Eggman]]'s bases, including the [[Final Fortress]].<ref>{{Cite game|dev=[[Sumo Digital]]|date=21 May 2019|game=Team Sonic Racing|system=PlayStation 4|pub=[[Sega]]|area=[[Boo's House]]|quote='''[[Omochao]]''': The Chao are scared of this place.}}</ref> While Chao are said to live in packs,<ref>[[Backbone Entertainment]], [[Sega Studio USA]] (13 November 2007). ''[[Sonic Adventure 2: Battle]]''. [[Nintendo GameCube]]. [[Sega]]. Area/level: Tutorial (Chao). "'''[[Omochao]]''': Chao hate crowded gardens. Try to limit (8) Chao to a garden!"</ref>
Chao will evolve a second time after one to three Chao years. However, the Chao won't go into a cocoon, and the changes are sometimes very subtle. A Chao will 'evolve' depending on which stat is the highest at the moment. However, it won't change its primary type. Like a child Chao's gradual evolution, the second evolution is not permanent, and can be changed. For example, if you had a Dark/Fly/Fly Chao and gave a lot of green Chaos Drives/Animals it would become a Dark/Fly/Running Chao. However, if you then gave it Red Chaos Drives/Animals, its appearance would change again, and it would become a Dark/Fly/Power Chao.

  +
When it comes to biology, all Chao are genderless.<ref name="Pronoun">{{Cite web|url=https://spiritsonic.tumblr.com/post/632062761415966720/hi-i-really-enjoyed-issue-33-of-sonic-idw-i|title=Evan Stanley (@spiritsonic) on Tumblr|work=Tumblr|date=15 October 2020|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20201016175957/https://spiritsonic.tumblr.com/post/632062761415966720/hi-i-really-enjoyed-issue-33-of-sonic-idw-i|archivedate=16 October 2020|quote='''[[Evan Stanley]]''': ...SEGA asked that it be changed to they/them for Cheese and any other Chao. They are indeed genderless, and it’s now official policy to use gender-neutral pronouns to match!}}</ref> They also appear to be oviparous creatures, since they are born from special eggs known as [[Chao Egg]]s. Chao are capable of [[Chao breeding|reproduction]]; when they are ready to mate, flowers will bloom around them. If two Chao with flowers encounter each other, they will make a little dance and generate a Chao Egg. Chao can also mate if they are given heart fruits.<ref name="DoctorChao"/>
[[File:Chao reincarnation.gif|thumb|200px|left|Chao Reincarnation chart]]

After about five Chao years have passed,<ref>A Chao year is 3 regular hours. When a Chao dies, it will come back to life if it is treated nicely. The maximum amount of lives for any Chao is 3.</ref> the Chao will either reincarnate or die. If the Chao has lived a happy life, it will be surrounded by a pink cocoon, and will be reborn as an egg and hatch as a Baby Chao. There does not seem to be a limit to how many times a chao can reincarnate itself. However, a Chao that has been ignored and abused during its lifetime will surround itself with a gray cocoon, and vanish with the cocoon.

  +
[[File:Chao reincarnation.gif|thumb|225px|A Chao reincarnation chart, from [[CHAO Laboratory]].]]
Besides the normal evolutions, a special Chao called the "[[Light Chaos]]" can be created. This can be done once the selected Chao has transformed at least two times. During that third or higher cycle of its life, if it is happy enough, given at least one of each animal in the game, and all its stats are around equal, it will become a Light Chaos. Besides looking different than a normal Chao, the Light Chaos has an endless lifespan, except a death through extreme character abuse (not proven). In ''Sonic Adventure 2'', in addition to the Light Chaos there's also the "Hero Chaos" and "Dark Chaos". Evolution works in the same manner, except you give them one animal from either the Hero or Dark characters respectively, and that all of their stats are around equal. Along with their apparent invincibility, Light Chaos, Hero Chaos and Dark Chaos also lack the ability to reproduce. They are the most difficult Chao to create.

  +
Chao can also grow into adults, though they do not change much in terms of body size.<ref name="DoctorChao"/> When one "Chao year" has passed (roughly one to three hours), the Chao will create a cocoon and evolve into a more mature form. Like other living beings, Chao have a life span and will eventually die; however, if their owners take good care of them and befriended them, Chao will begin a process known as '''reincarnation''', where they will either show a pink-colored cocoon and be reborn from an egg as a child. However, if their owners treat them harshly, Chao will show a gray cocoon and then disappear for good.<ref name="DoctorChao"/>

  +
Chao can also have their own alignment, which varies depending on their owners and the way they are treated.<ref name="SonicComicChao"/> By default, Chao are '''Normal Chao''', and change to either [[Hero Chao|Hero]] or [[Dark Chao]], with a gentle or a wimpy personality respectively.<ref name="SonicComicChao"/> Regardless, all three types of Chao behave mostly the same. Looking at it this way, Chao may be like some sort of water mirror that reflects their environment.<ref name="SonicComicChao"/>
The DS Chao in ''[[Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]'' do not evolve; they learn to be used as weapons.

  +
Besides the normal evolutions, a special Chao called a "[[Chaos Chao]]" can be created. This can be done once the selected Chao has transformed at least two times. During that third or higher cycle of its life, if it is happy enough, given at least one of each animal in the game, and all its stats are around equal, it will become a Chaos Chao. Besides looking different than a normal Chao, the Chaos Chao has an endless lifespan. There are three types of Chaos Chao: "Light Chaos", "Hero Chaos" and "Dark Chaos". To get a Hero Chaos or a Dark Chaos, the player should give them one animal from either the Hero or Dark characters respectively, and that all of their stats are around equal. Along with their apparent invincibility, Chaos Chao lack the ability to reproduce.
===Reproduction===

After evolving, Chao gain the ability to [[Chao Breeding|reproduce]]. Chao have no gender and therefore can breed with any other adult Chao. Chao are in mating season when they sit down happily and are surrounded by a circle of flowers. While this happens twice naturally, it can also be achieved by purchasing 'Heart Fruit' from the Black Market in ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle''/''Sonic Adventure DX'' and giving it to an adult Chao. Placing another Chao inside the circle may result in breeding. Most Chao are compatible; a Hero Chao can breed with a Dark Chao, and vice versa. It is believed that, to at least some degree, statistics and other characteristics are inherited. As mentioned above, Light Chaos, Hero Chaos and Dark Chaos cannot breed.

  +
===Powers and abilities===
Using two VMUs with Chao Adventure or two VMUs with Chao Adventure 2, connect the two VMUs and then select the breeding option, which will breed the two Chao in different VMUs, and give each VMU an egg.

  +
Chao are capable of flight. As shown [[Sonic Advance 2|during]] [[Sonic Advance 3|various]] [[Sonic Heroes|incidents]], some Chao are able to deal [[Chao Attack|great]] [[Chao Guardians|damage]] to their targets. During [[Dodon Pa]]'s [[Team Sonic Racing|Grand Prix]], Chao have also demonstrated to be able to drive racing vehicles like the [[Chao Pod]], and in other instances, they could drive mechs like the [[Chao Walker]] as well. However, they are said to be weak life forms;<ref name="DoctorChao"/> as noted by [[Tikal]], Chao are too vulnerable without the protection of a guardian.<ref name="SingPeace">[[Sonic Team]] (9 September 1999). ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. [[Dreamcast]]. [[Sega]]. Cutscene: [[Sonic Adventure/Script (Gamma)#Cutscene 5|Cutscene 5]] ([[E-102 Gamma|Gamma]]'s story). "'''[[Tikal]]''': Did you notice the presence guarding these children? He's a very loving and gentle creature. These little creatures are too vulnerable without it's protection. This protection allows them to continue singing in peace."</ref>

  +
By giving Chao other lifeforms such as [[Animals]], they will absorb and learn some of the given beings' skills and traits. Besides a physical change to the Chao, this will also cause a vast change in behavior, abilities, and personality.<ref name="BrawlProfile"/> Similarly, [[Chaos Drive]]s can be used to raise Chao's abilities. On a similar note, as demonstrated by [[Chaos]], Chao can harness the power of at least the [[Master Emerald]] to gain deity-like abilities, though the effects of these on another Chao are unknown.
===Chao Stats===

Chao have various stats that effect their performance. The visible stats are ranked E-S, with S rank stats getting the best possible growth when leveling up. Beyond the 5 visible stats, 2 invisible stats known as Luck & Intelligence also effect a chao's performance.

  +
==Background==
By giving a Chao [[Animals|small animals]] it will acquire some of the animal's characteristics. Besides a physical change to the Chao, this will also modify the Chao's stats based on the type of animal given. There are five types of animals in ''Sonic Adventure'' and seven in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. They consist of Running (Green), Power (Red), Swimming (Yellow) and Flying (Purple). The fifth color, Blue, is a fairly even mixture of some or all of the other classes. The two additional types featured in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' are Ghost (Black) and Imaginary (Gold), sometimes called Legendary. All animals raise the Luck and Intelligence bars by 20%.

  +
At least one Chao colony has existed on [[earth]] millenia before the [[Chaos]] [[Sonic Adventure|incident]]. On what is now [[Angel Island]], a small community of Chao was known to live around the [[Altar of Emerald]]. Eventually, however, contact with the [[Master Emerald]] caused one of those Chao to turn into Chaos, a liquified being with deity-like abilities akin in appearance with the [[Ancients]], the Chao's genetic ancestors.<ref>{{Cite game|dev1=[[Sonic Team]]|date=8 November 2022|game=Sonic Frontiers|system=PlayStation 5|publisher=[[Sega]]|area=View Fish-o-pedia Menu|quote='''[[Egg Memo|Egg Memo 11]]'''': I don't believe this! Around 3,000 years ago,<ref name="AdventureGuide"/> the Chao living in the Altar of Emerald met and befriended [[Tikal]], a young [[echidna]] from the [[Knuckles Clan]]. Shortly after her arrival, Chaos appeared before her. Though the female echidna was surprised by this, Chaos assured her it trusted her. In ''Sonic Adventure 2'', [[Chaos Drive]]s appear. Chaos Drives are items that pop out of machines created by the military organization [[Guardian Units of Nations|G.U.N.]] when they are destroyed. These, like the small animals, also raise your Chao's stats. These are only in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' and the GameCube adaptation. Like the small animals, the different colors each raise a certain stat. Yellow raises swim, purple raises fly, green raises run, and red raises power.

Unfortunately, the Chao from the Altar of Emerald were threatened when [[Pachacamac]], the chief of the Knuckles Clan and Tikal's power-hungry father, sought to obtain the seven [[Chaos Emerald]]s on the altar for his people. After learning of this, Tikal immediatly went to the Altar of Emerald and warned Chaos about the future invasion, begging it to take the local Chao away from there. However, it told her it could not do that, leading to the female echidna promising to try to change her father's mind.<ref>[[Sonic Team]] (9 September 1999). ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''. [[Dreamcast]]. [[Sega]]. Area/Level: [[Mystic Ruins (Sonic Adventure)|Mystic Ruins]] ([[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]]' story). "'''[[Tikal]]''': I beg of you. Hear me now. My father is coming here soon. And I fear what may happen. You must take everyone away from here! Oh please! So, are you saying you can't leave this place? I understand... Let me talk to my father again! There must be a better way to do this. Don't worry, my friends. I won't let you down. I must do something...quickly."</ref> Sadly, however, Pachacamac ultimately went along with his plans. On a night, he launched a full-scale assault on the altar and had his troops cramble over Tikal and the Chao. Seeing this horrible treatment towards its friends, Chaos gave in into its anger and used the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to turn into [[Perfect Chaos]], killing Pachacamac and his men. Now fueled by thoughts of destruction, however, Chaos did not stop its rampage right there, and instead sought to destroy the world. Fortunately, Tikal used an [[Tikal's Prayer|ancient prayer]] to seal herself and Chaos in the [[Master Emerald]], which would then be guarded by the few remaining people of the Knuckles Clan for the next millennia.<ref name="AdventureGuide"/>
However, neither animals nor Chaos Drives can raise a Chao's stamina, only food can, mainly the fruit from the trees grown in the Chao Gardens. Also, a certain fruit called the Chao Fruit (bought at the Black Market) raises all stats, including Stamina, when it is given to a Chao.

  +
After this incident, the Chao that lived in the Altar of Emerald were endangered, and forced to leave their original home and look for a new place to live elsewhere. A few were able to barely survive, and some had new, artificial homes built by [[human]]s.<ref name="AdventureGuide"/>
===Transformation===

In certain games like ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'' (after the evolution into a Hero, Neutral, or Dark Chao), Chao go into an either pink or gray cocoon at the end of their lifespan. The pink cocoon means they're reincarnating, and the gray means they're going to die. Light Chaos, Hero Chaos and Dark Chaos are [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immortality immortal]; thus, they will never enter into a cocoon once formed. A reincarnated Chao keeps all of its letter grades from its previous life as well as its skills, tools, awards, and even intelligence. Its stat levels will reset to 1, but reincarnated Chao also retain 10% of their stats totals prior to death. With enough time and effort, this enables the player to eventually maximize all stats if they're raised to lv. 99 in each lifetime. In the Dreamcast versions, since all stat increases are constant for every Chao, they are all reset instead.

===Bonding===

  +
===''Sonic Adventure''===
Chao are apparently able to bond with other life forms, from animals to characters. This allows for the Chao to gain characteristics from them, and in ''Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood'', enhance an ability of a character.

  +
[[File:Sonic Adventure DX 2017-01-06 23-50-44-403.png|thumb|225px|Various Chao with [[Chaos]] and [[Tikal]], from ''[[Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut]]''.]]
  +
In ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'' and its enhanced port ''[[Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut]]'', Chao are a prominent feature. One of those Chao, [[Chaos]], plays a major role in the games as their main villain until the end, where it gets neutralized by [[Super Sonic]] and reunites with its fellow Chao. Ordinary Chao, alongside Chaos, are also found in [[Tikal]]'s visions of the [[Knuckles Clan]]'s attack on the [[Altar of Emerald]] 3,000 years in the past.

  +
In gameplay, Chao can be raised as virtual pets in the [[Chao Garden]]. The games have three of these Gardens in each [[Adventure Field]]: [[Station Square Garden|one]] is found in [[Station Square (Sonic Adventure)|Station Square]], the other in the [[Mystic Ruins (Sonic Adventure)|Mystic Ruins]], and there is an [[Egg Carrier Island|island-like Chao Garden]] connected to the [[Egg Carrier (Sonic Adventure)|Egg Carrier]]. However, all of these work basically the same. In order to raise a Chao, the player must first get one from [[Chao Egg]]s, which are obtained in many ways. Each Chao Garden comes with two Chao Eggs when it is visited for the first time. Chao take some time to be born from their eggs, and depending on the way the player interacts with those eggs, their Chao may behave differently for the rest of their life.
In ''Sonic Adventure 2'', once a character has bonded with a Chao enough, it will recognize the character's whistle and follow it whenever that character whistles.

  +
Chao can show a wide variety of emotions that vary depending on the way they are treated:
==Chao Gardens==

===''Sonic Adventure/DX''===

*'''[[Station Square Garden]]''' - This garden is the simplest, with a small water pool. This is also where one accesses the Chao races. It is found by entering the hotel and using the left elevator. In ''DX'', a Black Market is added.

*'''[[Mystic Ruins Garden]]''' - This area is very large and complex, with stone relics and a small platform accessible by a wooden bridge, along with a waterfall. It is found by going behind Tails's laboratory and taking the mining cart in the cave. In ''DX'', the water is slightly more shallow and the bridge has been removed.

*'''[[Egg Carrier Island|Egg Carrier Garden]]''' - An island surrounded by water. This one tends to have problems of animals leaving the game's boundaries and getting stuck. To find it, go inside the Egg Carrier and go to the door with the buttons in front. Step on the buttons in the "secret" password's order, which is "Eggman", and then go in the door and use the teleporter. In ''DX'', the water is significantly more shallow.

  +
*If the player character treats a Chao badly, they will be upset; when that character carries them, the Chao will make displeased noises and act as if they want to squirm out of the character's grasp. In other cases, they will shake in fear, cry or flee away from the player character when the Chao is approached. In particular, mistreated [[Dark Chao]] may behave agressively to the point where they will repeatedly stomp the ground and throw a tantrum or even attack the player character if nearby. Actions that decreases a Chao's bond with the player character include: the Chao is attacked or thrown, the Chao is interrupted while they are doing a certain activity (such as drawing or sleeping) and fruit being taken away from Chao while they are eating them.
[[File:Chaohandd.jpg|thumb|Dark and Hero Chao as seen in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. Note how the Dark Chao has a pink/red spikeball instead of a blue Ring]]

  +
*Conversely, if Chao are well treated, they will happily follow the player character and nuzzling against them to get their attention and act delighted when the player character holds them. Actions that raise a Chao's bond with the player character include: petting the Chao, feed it fruit, give it an [[Animals|Animal]], or removing them from the garden lakes while they are flailing in water (if their Swim stat is not high enough).
===''Sonic Adventure 2''/''Battle''===

These gardens can be accessed in [[Chao World]].

*'''[[Neutral Garden]]''' - A peaceful looking Garden where the Chao Races take place in a cave called the Chao Stadium. This one is unlocked as soon as you get a Chao Key and finish the level you found it on. In ''Battle'', there is also Chao Karate in the cave.

*'''[[Hero Garden]]''' - Another peaceful Garden. To get this raise a Chao into a Hero Chao. It has a small castle your Chao can fly from, a fountain (that your Chao uses to swim in), and a few broken pillars. The music in the Hero Garden is different from the Chao Garden, with the same rhythm, but added sound effects to make it echo and sound comforting. Sometimes described as "Chao Heaven". In ''Battle'', the bridge and river are missing, the pool is bigger but also more shallow, meaning Tails cannot drown in the garden.

*'''[[Dark Garden]]''' - Not as serene as the others, it has some graves and a steel fence on some of the walls. It also has a tree with a cage hanging from it where you can put your Chao (it can, however, escape), a pool of "blood", and a small island on the other side of the "blood". The music presented in the Dark Garden is very demented version of the Neutral Garden music. There is also a mountainous region outside of the actual Dark Garden, with a mountain shaped in the face of a bat or demonic creature. A Dark Chao is needed to get it. Sometimes described as "Chao Hell". In ''Battle'', the cave and mountain area are gone.

  +
Chao have seven different ability stats which influence a Chao's performance in Chao Races. The first five stats are visible to the player:
The Chao Gardens in ''Sonic Adventure'' and ''Sonic Adventure 2'' have the ability to send Chao to an attached VMU (Visual Memory Unit), and play with the Chao away from the Dreamcast in a game called '''Chao Adventure'''. The Chao walks on a path and is given a task. If done correctly, you are rewarded with a fruit or seed which can be taken off the VMU and back onto ''Sonic Adventure 2'' for planting. Seeds can be planted by a Chao with a shovel and a watering can. The shovel can be won in races in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. On Chao Adventure, you can also attach two VMUs to mate Chao, check the stats of your Chao, and name it. In Chao Adventure, the Chao doesn't age like it does in gardens. In the HD Releases of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, the Chao Adventure Machines are changed to the Chao Naming machine and the Chao departure Machine respectively.

  +
*'''Swim''': The Chao's ability to swim. Higher values allow the Chao to swim through water faster. Once a Chao's Swim stat reaches 100 or higher, they will be capable of swimming in races and garden lakes. Prior to this, when a Chao's Swim stat value is less than 100, they will flail in the water and be upset.
  +
*'''Fly''': The Chao's ability to fly. Higher values allow the Chao to glide faster and cover more distance. In Chao Gardens, once a Chao's Fly stat reaches a certain value, they may jump off of certain locations and fly around for a short amount of time.
  +
*'''Run''': The speed of the Chao on the ground. However, the higher the values, the more energy the Chao will consume. In Chao Gardens, once a Chao's Run stat reaches certain values, they will be able to walk, and then be able run.
  +
*'''Power''': The speed at which the Chao can climb cliff faces and shake trees.
  +
*'''Stamina''': The Chao's energy which constantly decreases throughout a race. Once the Stamina bar depletes, the Chao will move much slower. This stat was nonexistent in the Dreamcast version of ''Sonic Adventure'', as an HP counter took its spot instead.

  +
The following stats of a Chao are not shown to the player in-game
===''Sonic Advance''/''Sonic Advance 2''/''Sonic Pinball Party''===

  +
*'''Intelligence''': Determines how accurately the Chao is able to solve problems in races.
''[[Sonic Advance]]'', ''[[Sonic Advance 2]]'' and ''[[Sonic Pinball Party]]'' also have a '''[[Tiny Chao Garden]]''' of its own, which is a small simple garden with a small pool that is universal to every game. There is a shop where fruit and toys can be bought for the Rings that the player has collected during gameplay, and some minigames. The Chao can be transferable between these games and ''Sonic Adventure DX'' and ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'' via a [[GameCube]]/ [[GBA]] link cable.

  +
*'''Luck''': Determines the odds of a Chao triggering luck-based traps in races.

  +
When a Chao is newly born, all of its stats will be at level 0, but can be leveled up to level 99. The first four of these stats can be raised by giving the Chao [[Animals]]. When an Animal is given to a Chao, gauges representing certain stats will either be filled up or emptied and it may exhibit certain behavior traits depending on the Animal given. Stamina, on the other hand, is leveled up when a Chao is given food to eat. When those gauges are filled, their respective stats will fill up by one. Additionally, a second gauge will also fill up and improve the Chao's performance in its respective stat.
===''Sonic Advance 3''===

Also, ''[[Sonic Advance 3]]'' has a Chao Playground, unlike a Chao Garden, it is not for raising Chao. Instead, it is an area where the hidden Chao that the player has found during gameplay are located. When all ten of the Chao in the zone are found, the player can look for keys that enable the [[Special Stage (Sonic Advance 3)|Special Stage]] for that particular zone. If the ''Chaos Emerald ''is obtained for a Zone, then it will be seen floating in the Chao Playground of the Zone it was found in. The Chao Playground can be visited at any time via [[Factory Ring]].

  +
Additionally, the player can take their Chao to compete in a [[Chao Race]]. This is where stats come in; the higher levels the Chao has, the more likely are they to win in races. The player's Chao will race against seven other Chao to get to the finish line first. Taking Chao to Chao Races is also important for the player to collect five [[Emblem]]s.
===''Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood''===

{{Main|Chao in Sonic Chronicles}}

In ''[[Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]'', there is a Chao Garden where all Chao that have been found can be viewed and equipped. All Chao (with the exception of Cheese) can be obtained by collecting Chao Eggs and waiting a while for them to hatch. However, as with ''[[Sonic Advance 3]]'', the garden is only for storing Chao, not interacting with or raising them. Taken out of the garden, however, they bond with the character they are attached to, and power them up with various effects in battle. A character can only be bonded with one Chao at a time.

  +
When a Chao reaches the end of its life, the Chao will envelop themselves inside of a cocoon. If they were treated badly in their life, they will disappear, implying they have died. Conversely, if they have received enough care from the player, they will reincarnate in the form of a Chao Egg. When the reincarnated Chao is hatched from the egg, it will be reborn as a baby with their stats' levels reset to 1, but it will retain 10% of their stat points it had in its previous life, allowing the player to further raise the stats to higher values. In the Dreamcast versions of ''Sonic Adventure'' and ''Sonic Adventure 2'', the Chao will always envelop itself in a gray cocoon regardless if it would die or reincarnate while in all subsequent re-releases (''Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut'', ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'' and their remasters) Chao will envelop themselves in a gray or a pink cocoon if they would die or reincarnate respectively.
Players can trade Chao with each other via the [[Nintendo DS]] wireless communications feature which can enhance the battle effects of these Chao.

In ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'' and its enhanced port ''[[Sonic Adventure 2: Battle]]'', three [[Chao Garden]]s can be accessed in [[Chao World]]:
  +
  +
*'''[[Neutral Garden]]''' - This garden is unlocked upon the player's first visit to the [[Chao Lobby]] (which requires the player to get at least one [[Chao Key]] in a stage and then finish it). It contains the [[Chao Stadium]] where all [[Chao Race]] events take place at.
  +
*'''[[Hero Garden]]''' - A heaven-themed Garden. It is unlocked when a Chao is raised into a [[Hero Chao]].
  +
*'''[[Dark Garden]]''' - A horror-themed garden. It is unlocked when a Chao is raised into a [[Dark Chao]].
  +
  +
Chao raising mechanics remain the same from ''Soinc Adventure'' and ''Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut'', with the following addition:
  +
  +
*A Chao that reaches a high-enough bond level with a player character will also happily approach the character if they whistle.
  +
  +
The Chao Gardens in the ''Sonic Adventure'' series have the ability to send Chao to an attached [[wikipedia:VMU|VMU]] (Visual Memory Unit) using the [[Transporter Machine]] (renamed to the Chao Transporter in ''Sonic Adventure 2''). This results in the ability to play with the Chao away from the Dreamcast in a mini-games called ''[[Chao Adventure]]'' and ''[[Chao Adventure 2]]'' respectively. The Chao walks on a path and is given a task. If done correctly, the player is rewarded with a fruit or seed which can be taken off the VMU and back onto ''Sonic Adventure 2'' for planting. Seeds can be planted by a Chao with a watering can and a shovel, the latter which can be won in races in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. In the ''Chao Adventure'' games, the player can also attach two VMUs to [[Chao breeding|breed]] Chao, check the stats of a Chao, and name them. In ''Chao Adventure'', the Chao does not age like it does in gardens.
  +
  +
In a similar vein, the [[Nintendo GameCube]] version of ''[[Sonic Adventure 2: Battle]]'' can communicate with the [[Game Boy Advance]] versions of ''[[Sonic Advance]]'' and ''[[Sonic Advance 2]]'' to allow a two-way transfer of Chao gameplay data.
  +
  +
The [[Chao Kindergarten]] provides various facilities related to raising Chao.
  +
  +
In ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'', the player can also take their Chao to compete in [[Chao Karate]] in Chao Stadium. The Chao's stats determine their performance in this minigame as follows:
  +
*'''Swim''': The Chao's defense stat. Higher values allow the Chao to mitigate more damage.
  +
*'''Fly''': The Chao's stealth stat. Higher values increase the chance that the Chao will dodge its opponent's attacks.
  +
*'''Run''': The Chao's overall movement.
  +
*'''Power''': The Chao's attack power. Higher values allow the Chao to inflict more damage to the opponent and knock them further back. Initially, a Chao will only use simple punches or kicks to attack but when its Power stat reaches a certain value, they will perform spinning kicks and wind-up punches instead.
  +
*'''Stamina''': The Chao's health stat.

However, the Chao themselves never participate in these events. Also, in the game's story mode, shortly before the Olympic Games began, a Normal Chao and [[Omochao]] were attacked by an [[Egg Pawn]] and [[Flapper]], only to be saved saved by [[Bowser Jr.]]. The Chao proceeded to thank Bowser Jr. before departing with [[Shadow the Hedgehog|Shadow]] and [[Silver the Hedgehog|Silver]]. A Chao was also seen appearing at the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. In addition, [[Cheese]] appeared alongside Cream during the subsequent [[Phantasmal Fog]] outbreak.

In ''[[Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]'', there is a [[Chao Garden]] where all Chao that have been found can be viewed and equipped. All Chao (with the exception of [[Cheese]]) can be obtained by collecting [[Chao Egg]]s and waiting a while for them to hatch. However, as with ''Sonic Advance 3'', the garden is only for storing Chao, not interacting with or raising them. Taken out of the garden, however, they bond with the character they are attached to, and power them up with various effects in battle. A character can only be bonded with one Chao at a time.
  +
  +
Players can trade Chao with each other via the [[Nintendo DS]] wireless communications feature which can enhance the battle effects of these Chao.

In this game, they are members of [[Team Rose]] and [[Technique-Type]] characters. Their racecar in this game is the [[Chao Pod]]. Neutral, Hero and Dark Chao also appear on the stands in the background of the race tracks, serving as the audience.

During the events of the game, Team Rose's Chao joined [[Amy Rose|Amy]] and [[Big the Cat|Big]] on a picnic before coming along with their team to join the Grand Prix organized by [[Dodon Pa]]. During the races, the Chao spectators would panic when they spotted [[Zavok]], which alerted the other heroes to the red [[Zeti]]'s presence. At the end of the game, the Chao helped take the non-flying members of [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]]'s friends off the [[Final Fortress]], which had begun to crash, in order to save them.

  +
===''Sonic Speed Simulator''===
==Treatment==

  +
In ''[[Sonic Speed Simulator]]'', Chao appear as both non-playable characters and notable gameplay elements. In the latter case, they serve to increase the amount of [[Experience Point]]s and [[Ring]]s that the player collects over the course of the game.
Chao are kept happy if they are pet, fed, and generally taken good care of. If a Chao is treated well by a character, it will skip towards that character and will nuzzle next to it sometimes. It will also happily come to you when you whistle, and when held, will fidget with glee. This means that your Chao loves the player's character and in the case of the nuzzling, is asking for attention. The Chao will also jump up and down and giggle happily at your presence.

  +
In gameplay, the player can buy Chao from [[vending machine]]s, earn them from gifts, buy them directly from limited time shops in [[Green Hill (Sonic Speed Simulator)|Green Hill]], receive them as rewards when completing specific objectives during an [[Sonic Speed Simulator/Events|event]], receive them from [[Spin Wheel]]s, or redeem them from codes. There are as well Chao that are only available for a limited time. These Chao tend to appear during different events where they can be earned by completing event objectives or buying them from stands in Green Hill.
Chao abuse is a somewhat strange and negative form of Chao raising, in which one hurts their Chao. This can be done in a manner of ways, such as starving a Chao, leaving it in the water when it cannot swim, or simply inflict physical harm upon it. Chao abuse usually decreases the lifespan of the Chao, and the Chao can possibly die when it comes time to transform.

  +
Once obtained, Chao can be equipped to the playable character, whom the Chao will appear behind of in an semi-circle formations. The game offers several different Chao to choose from. Each Chao has a unique color and a name that is more or less associated with its look. In addition, each Chao has different attributes. These include the classification of their rarity, the most common of which are "Common", "Uncommon", "Rare", "Epic", and "Legendary", while the rest are exclusive to limited-edition Chao, which include "Chaos", "Exotic" and "Special". Other unique traits each Chao has are the benefits they grant when equipped.
Players generally abuse their Chao either because they enjoy it, or wish to "help" a Chao change alignment by abusing it with a character of the opposite side; for example, if a Chao is abused by a dark character such as [[Rouge the Bat|Rouge]], it will tend to favor the hero alignment characters, or, if it is abused by a hero character such as [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]], it will tend to favor the dark alignment characters. However, mistreatment is in no way necessary in order to change a Chao's alignment, as treating them kindly with a character of the desired alignment works just as well. Much more commonly a player will throw their chao into walls to remove hats they wear, or even harm a chao simply by accident.

  +
The player can equip the playable character with three of any Chao to accompany them during gameplay, although that limit can be increased to a maximum of five with the +2 Pet Slots gamepass. Also, while equipped to the playable character, the Chao will gain Experience Points to level up with whenever the player collects Chaos Orbs, touches [[Sky Ring]]s, or buys Experience Points from vending machines. Leveling up a Chao will improve the benefits they grant. The maximum level for all Chao is 99. The Experience Points gained for Chao is also not affected by Rebirth multipliers or the effects of other Chao or Trails.
If a Chao is treated poorly by the character, it will usually stand and shiver in fear if the abusing character is close by, and when held, it will try to squirm out of the character's hands (this could also mean that the character haven't fed the Chao for a while if it stops fidgeting with joy). If the Chao has been particularly abused, it might run away screaming from the abuser, run up to them and attack them (this has no effect on the character), or start crying.

  +
While the player can carry up to twenty Chao by default, they can expand their number of holding shots for Chao by purchasing additional slots with a large amount of [[w:c:roblox:Robux|Robux]]. Additionally, the player can evolve a Chao by collecting five of the same type and pressing the "Evolve" button in the Chao inventory, which will fuse these five Chao into one. Evolving a Chao will combine the base stats of all the Chao involved, but it also keeps the Experience Points and level of the specific Chao that was evolved. The player can also "enchant" a Chao in [[Enchantment Shrine]]s, which will grant it one of six (originally seven) buffs. There, the player can, for the price of one million Rings, grant a Chao one of the following buffs: speed enhancement, power enhancement, XP heightening, Ring heightening, [[Magnet]] enhancement, and increased lucky draws. But that was prior to the Reborn update, so now the player has to make sure those 5 Chao are at the maximum pet level (level 25) in order to fuse them.
In the original ''Sonic Adventure'' Chao were very fragile to raise and would quickly die if a character attacks them over and over, but after the Hero/Dark aspect was introduced in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' Chao no longer die right away but instead their personality changes and they end up hating the character that abused them (however, they will still eventually end up dying after becoming an adult).

Normal Chao are also considered Two-Tone as they aren't a single color. If a Shiny Chao is bred with a Normal Chao, there is also a chance of getting a Shiny Two-Tone Chao. If you want a dark blue-and-black shiny Two-tone Chao you need a shiny dark blue Chao and a red-and-black two tone Chao. Mate them, save the game, and go back and hatch it.

White Two-Tone Chao are unique in that they look exactly like Normal Chao when they are hatched, but depending on what they evolve into, they will look much different. For example, if a White Two-Tone Chao evolves into a Neutral Run Chao, instead of being light green, it will be white with blue streaks, pink limbs and a yellow stomach.

In the ''[[Sonic X]]'' anime series and its [[Sonic X (comic series)|comic series]] published by [[Archie Comics]], Chao were a species native to both [[Sonic's world (Sonic X)|Sonic's world]] and [[Earth (Sonic X)|Earth]]. In this media, only Normal Chao appear (the comic introduced [[Dark Chao (Sonic X)|Dark Chao]] as well) and there is no mention of their lifecycles or their trait-borrowing skills.

  +
In the old days, the [[Knuckles Clan (Sonic X)|Knuckles Clan]] would injure some Chao during an attack, incurring the wrath of their guardian, [[Chaos (Sonic X)|Chaos]]. Generations later, several Chao would appear to make Chaos happy following its defeat at the hands of [[Super Sonic (Sonic X)|Super Sonic]].
*'''Invisible Chao''' are unique Chao whose bodies are invisible, except for their emotion-dot. They can be obtained by breeding a shiny yellow/grey/lime green monochrome Chao with a Jewel Chao.

*'''Transparent Chao''' are Chao that have a see-through base color. They are obtained by breeding a Jewel Chao with any Shiny Chao. On the PC version of Sonic Adventure DX, they are always solid.

*'''Presudo Chao''' are Chao that have a solid color with a tint. For example, a shiny jewel pink is a shiny two-tone white with a green tint. This one is nicknamed the "Mint" Chao. A shiny jewel brown looks exactly like a shiny two-tone white. A shiny jewel normal Chao will look exactly like a shiny version of the two-tone normal.

====''Chao In Space''====
*'''Character Chao''' are unique that greatly resemble three characters: [[Miles "Tails" Prower|Tails]], [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]], and [[Amy Rose|Amy]]. The Knuckles and Amy Chao are only available now through Action Replay, although they were officially released as part of events in Japan. The Tails Chao can be obtained via ''Phantasy Star Online'' or Action Replay. They are immortal, can't breed, and aren't affected by animal parts.

The ''[[Chao In Space]]'' animated short is based on the fictional, in-universe ''[[Chao in Space]]'' films. It features a Normal Chao dreaming about fighting a space battle, and contains many Chao-related references and Easter eggs.

  +
===Books and comics===
Although not official Character Chao, Neutral/Run/Run, Dark/Run/Run and Neutral/Fly/Fly Chao greatly resemble [[Sonic the Hedgehog|Sonic]], [[Shadow the Hedgehog|Shadow]] and [[NiGHTS]].

  +
====Archie Comics====
*'''[[Light Chaos]]''' are Chao that are immortal. These can be obtained by getting a Chao to go through two transformations, then giving it at least one of all 21 animals. When the Chao evolves, as long as its stats are balanced, it will become a Light Chaos. If it evolves Hero, It will be a Hero Chaos. If it evolves Dark, it will be a Dark Chaos.

*'''Glitch Chao''' are glitched versions of the Silver Chao that only appear in the Sega Dreamcast version of ''Sonic Adventure 2''. These Chao have oversized polygons and misplaced features on their body. If the polygons are too large, the game crashes. See [[Sonic Adventure/Glitches]] and [[Sonic Adventure 2/Glitches]] for more information.

*'''Hacked Chao''' are chao only obtainable by means of cheating such as Action Replay or using Chao Editors. Generally this category is used to refer to chao that only appear as Challenge Race opponents such as Omochao, Egg Chao, & small animals. The term can however apply to any chao that has illegitimately high stats or is obtained by means of cheating. A Jewel Tails, Knuckles, or Amy Chao would be another good example of this category.

*'''Bright Chao''' are unique versions of the Shiny Two-Tone Chao that are generated by some sort of quality error exclusive to the HD remake of Sonic Adventure 2. Hence their name, their appearance seems to be very bright. Other nicknames given are names such as "Neon Chao" or "Luminescent Chao". Bright Chao usually appear all white with little to no visible highlights. However, when the Bright Chao is a Dark Chao, you can start to see their colors and only their highlights appear bright.

[[File:Chaoinspace.png|thumb|Chao in Space poster.]]

*In ''Sonic Adventure'', a poster found outside Casinopolis advertises a film called "[[Chao in Space]]". This may be a reference to ''Lost in Space'', and the poster resembles the posters for the movie ''[[w:c:muppet:Muppets from Space|Muppets from Space]]''.

*In ''Sonic Adventure 2'', posters in the City Escape stage advertise "Chao in Space 2", featuring a Hero and a Dark Chao. The poster also mentions that it is "now on DVD".

*Also in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', a billboard with a Chao on it can be seen beside the road in the Kart Racing stages and mini-game. The billboard reads "Drive Safety!" instead of the correct "Drive Safely!"

*Also in ''SA2''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s City Escape, there is a Planet of the Chaos poster similar to the front cover of the 2-disc ''Planet of the Apes''.

*Also in ''SA2'', a neutral Chao is playable in the 2-player shooting mode. In the GameCube version, there's also a Dark Chao who replaces [[Big the Cat]]. Despite the addition of the Dark Chao Walker, there is no playable Hero Chao, oddly enough - the neutral Chao Walker still sides with the heroes.

*In ''SA2B'', a Chao is unlocked as Tails' extra kart in Kart Racing after all of Tails' Missions are completed.

*A neutral Chao is a playable, secret character in ''[[Sonic Shuffle]]'' for the Dreamcast.

*In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), there is a damaged poster that reveals some Dreamcast-era Chao and, although cut off, looks to be Chao in Space III. However, this is unused in the final game.

*In ''[[Sonic Heroes]]'', Chao appear in odd numbered [[Special Stage]]s, where a Neutral Chao and a Dark Chao float in front of the characters in a hot air balloon. The Neutral one throws power orbs to help the characters, while the Dark one throws mines.

**Also in ''Sonic Heroes'', [[Team Chaotix]] are given several missions that consist of finding and rescuing Chao.

*In ''[[Shadow the Hedgehog (game)|Shadow the Hedgehog]]'', dozens of Chao can be found frolicking in [[Doctor Eggman|Dr. Eggman]]'s Cryptic Castle base. They can be attacked, which makes them cry and slightly raises Shadow's "dark" meter. [[Cheese]] can be attacked, too, but once simply touched is considered to be rescued.

*In [[Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)|''Sonic the Hedgehog'' (2006)]], a rusted Chao billboard can be seen being blown around by the tornado in Shadow's glider section of the "Crisis City" stage.

**Also in ''Sonic the Hedgehog'', the first rusted sign Silver uses as a platform in the first section of his "Crisis City" stage says "Chao Garden", though it is difficult to tell.

**Also in ''Sonic the Hedgehog'', there are several rusted signs advertising ''Chao In Space III'', though it is difficult to tell.

*In ''Phantasy Star Universe'' there are rare monsters called "Jao" which looks like a more vicious version of a Chao. Chao and Omochao appear as types of Mags in the series as well. The ''Phantasy Star'' series was also created by [[Sonic Team]].

*In the game ''Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg'', a Chao appears as an Egg Animal for the first mission in the game.

*In ''[[Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]'', Chao are power-ups.

*In ''[[Sonic Unleashed]]'' a mission in Spagonia makes you collect ten Neutral Chao as Sonic the Hedgehog. Also, a travelling salesman by the name of Wentos in the game carries around a Chao puppet in his right hand, acting as if it has a mind of its own and occasionally talks to it.

*In ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games]]'', when training for the Ski Cross event, to complete training, the player must race a Chao to the goal.

*In ''[[Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing]]'', Chao are seen in the audience of the Seaside Hill tracks, and as seen as a trophy.

*Mega Man Star Force Leo, Pegasus, or Dragon versions, features a character known as Mr. Hertz that sometimes appears on the wave roads; when you talk to them, the portrait of his face resembles a Chao head.

*A monster called PuPu in the JRPG series Final Fantasy resembles a Chao, strangely.

*In ''Sonic Generations'', you can see a ''Chao in Space III'' poster when Silver uses Meteor Smash.

*Chao were very fragile to raise in the Dreamcast version of ''Sonic Adventure'', meaning that they could die quickly if they were abused too much to an extent, even if they were still a child. Players can potentially get locked out of 100% completion if they did this to all of their Chao, including the special ones that can be found in the respective Adventure fields.

*In the Chao Garden, a pacifier was going to be an accessory for a Chao, but it was scrapped. The pacifier can still be used via cheats/hacking, but it makes the Chao's head disappear. The reason for this is likely because a separate model of both the Chao's head and pacifier was to be used in its place.

The ''Sonic Adventure 2'' mod [https://gamebanana.com/mods/48840 Chao World Extended] made the pacifier an accessory slot so that both the Chao's head and pacifier are visible.
*Occasionally, a Chao will draw a picture of a normal Chao on the ground. If you care for your Chao a lot, it may occasionally draw a picture of your character. Sometimes they draw a cake or pizza-like picture to show that they are hungry.

*Despite ''Sonic Adventure'' stating that Chao do not like to be in crowded groups (no more than eight), at [[Cryptic Castle]], in ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', there is a group of Chao vastly exceeding eight. Also, in ''Sonic Rivals 2'', Silver stated that Chao live in packs.

  +
*A match toy (dubbed as the "'''unknown (glitch toy?)'''" in Fusion's Chao Editor) was meant for the Chao in the ''Sonic Adventure 2'' Chao Garden, but it was scrapped. However, it can still be used through hacking or a Chao editor. When the Chao uses the toy while bored, it holds the match for several seconds without moving, then the behavior stops; it was likely intended to be used to light the unused firecracker and bomb toys.
**This may have been made to prevent the player from overcrowding their gardens, or having too many to raise. Another reason could be that only eight Chao can fit into a Garden due to memory. For example, if all three Chao Gardens were open in ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'', and the Hero Garden was full. If a ninth Chao was brought in, a random Chao in the garden would be moved to one of the other two gardens.

*Occasionally, a Chao will draw a picture of a Normal Chao on the ground. If a Chao is cared for frequently a lot, it may occasionally draw a picture of the playable character. Sometimes they draw a cake or pizza-like picture to show that they are hungry.
*In the ''Sonic Adventure'' series, Chao made baby noises, and in ''Sonic Heroes'', they could even speak small sentences, such as Cheese saying "It's [[Chocola]] Chao." But now, the only thing Chao can say are their own names, in a Pokémon-esque manner.

Not to be confused with Chaos. For other uses, see Chao (disambiguation).

Chao chao!

— The common phrase of a Chao

The Chao[note 1] (チャオ Chao?) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a mystical species inhabiting various areas of earth.

Description

Anatomy

While there is not a defined appearance for Chao, most of them share various common features. Described as cute,[1] they are small creatures, about the size of Wisps,[2] with gelatinous, pudding-like[3] bodies each. In general, Chao have round, waterdrop-like heads with large eyes but no noses, round torsos smaller than their heads, smooth feet with no legs, and arms with no visible hands. Neither their arms or feet have digits. They also have a short tail, small wings, and a floating dot above their heads. It has been noted that, when they grow up, Chao do not show many differences compared to younger Chao.[3]

Characteristics and culture

SonicChannel Chao CoAD 2020

Various Chao at a Chao Garden, from Sonic Channel.

Like humans and other anthropomorphic animals, Chao are highly social and sapient creatures, have very flexible facial expressions, and possess self-awareness. They also behave closely like human infants, and possess delightful, pleasant, and lively mannerisms,[1][4] getting delighted when their owners pat or embrace them gently, or simply carry them around.[3][5] Conversely, Chao do not like to be attacked, especially with a Spin Attack-related move, thrown, or punished.[5] They also enjoy fruit,[5] which is their favorite food.[4]

Chao live in certain areas of earth, known as the Chao Gardens. These gardens are paradise for Chao,[3] and have a nice, clean and shallow pool for them and palm trees with the fruit they eat. Nevertheless, various Chao have demonstrated that they can live in other environments, as long as these have pools of fresh water.[1] The best-known case of this is Cheese, who lives with Cream the Rabbit and her family. Conversely, Chao dislike dried out places like Sandopolis,[6] and are also scared of Dr. Eggman's bases, including the Final Fortress.[7] While Chao are said to live in packs,[8] they hate living in crowded Chao Gardens.[9]

When it comes to biology, all Chao are genderless.[10] They also appear to be oviparous creatures, since they are born from special eggs known as Chao Eggs. Chao are capable of reproduction; when they are ready to mate, flowers will bloom around them. If two Chao with flowers encounter each other, they will make a little dance and generate a Chao Egg. Chao can also mate if they are given heart fruits.[3]

Chao reincarnation

A Chao reincarnation chart, from CHAO Laboratory.

Chao can also grow into adults, though they do not change much in terms of body size.[3] When one "Chao year" has passed (roughly one to three hours), the Chao will create a cocoon and evolve into a more mature form. Like other living beings, Chao have a life span and will eventually die; however, if their owners take good care of them and befriended them, Chao will begin a process known as reincarnation, where they will either show a pink-colored cocoon and be reborn from an egg as a child. However, if their owners treat them harshly, Chao will show a gray cocoon and then disappear for good.[3]

Chao can also have their own alignment, which varies depending on their owners and the way they are treated.[4] By default, Chao are Normal Chao, and change to either Hero or Dark Chao, with a gentle or a wimpy personality respectively.[4] Regardless, all three types of Chao behave mostly the same. Looking at it this way, Chao may be like some sort of water mirror that reflects their environment.[4]

Besides the normal evolutions, a special Chao called a "Chaos Chao" can be created.

Powers and abilities

Chao are capable of flight. As shown during various incidents, some Chao are able to deal great damage to their targets. During Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, Chao have also demonstrated to be able to drive racing vehicles like the Chao Pod, and in other instances, they could drive mechs like the Chao Walker as well. However, they are said to be weak life forms;[3] as noted by Tikal, Chao are too vulnerable without the protection of a guardian.[11]

By giving Chao other lifeforms such as Animals, they will absorb and learn some of the given beings' skills and traits. Besides a physical change to the Chao, this will also cause a vast change in behavior, abilities, and personality.[1] Similarly, Chaos Drives can be used to raise Chao's abilities. On a similar note, as demonstrated by Chaos, Chao can harness the power of at least the Master Emerald to gain deity-like abilities, though the effects of these on another Chao are unknown.

Background

At least one Chao colony has existed on earth millenia before the Chaos incident. On what is now Angel Island, a small community of Chao was known to live around the Altar of Emerald. Eventually, however, contact with the Master Emerald caused one of those Chao to turn into Chaos, a liquified being with deity-like abilities akin in appearance with the Ancients, the Chao's genetic ancestors.[12] With its new powers, Chaos protected its friends from foreign invaders and kept the water around the altar pure.[13][14][15] Thanks to its protection, the local Chao lived singing in peace.[11]

Around 3,000 years ago,[13] the Chao living in the Altar of Emerald met and befriended Tikal, a young echidna from the Knuckles Clan. Shortly after her arrival, Chaos appeared before her. Though the female echidna was surprised by this, Chaos assured her it trusted her. The two soon became friends, with Tikal having become so close to the Chao that she would allegedly go to the Altar of Emerald to play with her Chao friends and Chaos.[13][16][17]

Unfortunately, the Chao from the Altar of Emerald were threatened when Pachacamac, the chief of the Knuckles Clan and Tikal's power-hungry father, sought to obtain the seven Chaos Emeralds on the altar for his people. After learning of this, Tikal immediatly went to the Altar of Emerald and warned Chaos about the future invasion, begging it to take the local Chao away from there. However, it told her it could not do that, leading to the female echidna promising to try to change her father's mind.[18] Sadly, however, Pachacamac ultimately went along with his plans. On a night, he launched a full-scale assault on the altar and had his troops cramble over Tikal and the Chao. Seeing this horrible treatment towards its friends, Chaos gave in into its anger and used the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to turn into Perfect Chaos, killing Pachacamac and his men. Now fueled by thoughts of destruction, however, Chaos did not stop its rampage right there, and instead sought to destroy the world. Fortunately, Tikal used an ancient prayer to seal herself and Chaos in the Master Emerald, which would then be guarded by the few remaining people of the Knuckles Clan for the next millennia.[13]

After this incident, the Chao that lived in the Altar of Emerald were endangered, and forced to leave their original home and look for a new place to live elsewhere. A few were able to barely survive, and some had new, artificial homes built by humans.[13]

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure DX 2017-01-06 23-50-44-403

Various Chao with Chaos and Tikal, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

In Sonic Adventure and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Chao are a prominent feature. One of those Chao, Chaos, plays a major role in the games as their main villain until the end, where it gets neutralized by Super Sonic and reunites with its fellow Chao. Ordinary Chao, alongside Chaos, are also found in Tikal's visions of the Knuckles Clan's attack on the Altar of Emerald 3,000 years in the past.

In gameplay, Chao can be raised as virtual pets in the Chao Garden. The games have three of these Gardens in each Adventure Field: one is found in Station Square, the other in the Mystic Ruins, and there is an island-like Chao Garden connected to the Egg Carrier. However, all of these work basically the same. In order to raise a Chao, the player must first get one from Chao Eggs, which are obtained in many ways. Each Chao Garden comes with two Chao Eggs when it is visited for the first time. Chao take some time to be born from their eggs, and depending on the way the player interacts with those eggs, their Chao may behave differently for the rest of their life.

Chao can show a wide variety of emotions that vary depending on the way they are treated:

  • If the player character treats a Chao badly, they will be upset; when that character carries them, the Chao will make displeased noises and act as if they want to squirm out of the character's grasp. In other cases, they will shake in fear, cry or flee away from the player character when the Chao is approached. In particular, mistreated Dark Chao may behave agressively to the point where they will repeatedly stomp the ground and throw a tantrum or even attack the player character if nearby. Actions that decreases a Chao's bond with the player character include: the Chao is attacked or thrown, the Chao is interrupted while they are doing a certain activity (such as drawing or sleeping) and fruit being taken away from Chao while they are eating them.
  • Conversely, if Chao are well treated, they will happily follow the player character and nuzzling against them to get their attention and act delighted when the player character holds them. Actions that raise a Chao's bond with the player character include: petting the Chao, feed it fruit, give it an Animal, or removing them from the garden lakes while they are flailing in water (if their Swim stat is not high enough).

Chao have seven different ability stats which influence a Chao's performance in Chao Races. The first five stats are visible to the player:

  • Swim: The Chao's ability to swim. Higher values allow the Chao to swim through water faster. Once a Chao's Swim stat reaches 100 or higher, they will be capable of swimming in races and garden lakes. Prior to this, when a Chao's Swim stat value is less than 100, they will flail in the water and be upset.
  • Fly: The Chao's ability to fly. Higher values allow the Chao to glide faster and cover more distance. In Chao Gardens, once a Chao's Fly stat reaches a certain value, they may jump off of certain locations and fly around for a short amount of time.
  • Run: The speed of the Chao on the ground. However, the higher the values, the more energy the Chao will consume. In Chao Gardens, once a Chao's Run stat reaches certain values, they will be able to walk, and then be able run.
  • Power: The speed at which the Chao can climb cliff faces and shake trees.
  • Stamina: The Chao's energy which constantly decreases throughout a race. Once the Stamina bar depletes, the Chao will move much slower. This stat was nonexistent in the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure, as an HP counter took its spot instead.

The following stats of a Chao are not shown to the player in-game

  • Intelligence: Determines how accurately the Chao is able to solve problems in races.
  • Luck: Determines the odds of a Chao triggering luck-based traps in races.

When a Chao is newly born, all of its stats will be at level 0, but can be leveled up to level 99. The first four of these stats can be raised by giving the Chao Animals.

Additionally, the player can take their Chao to compete in a Chao Race. This is where stats come in; the higher levels the Chao has, the more likely are they to win in races. The player's Chao will race against seven other Chao to get to the finish line first. Taking Chao to Chao Races is also important for the player to collect five Emblems.

In the Dreamcast versions of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, the Chao will always envelop itself in a gray cocoon regardless if it would die or reincarnate while in all subsequent re-releases (Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and their remasters) Chao will envelop themselves in a gray or a pink cocoon if they would die or reincarnate respectively.

Sonic Shuffle

A Chao is in Sonic Shuffle as a secret playable character, unlocked by collecting certain amounts of Knuckles' pictures in the Sonic Room.

Sonic Adventure 2

Chaohandd

Dark and Hero Chao, from Sonic Adventure 2.

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, three Chao Gardens can be accessed in Chao World:

Chao raising mechanics remain the same from Soinc Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, with the following addition:

  • A Chao that reaches a high-enough bond level with a player character will also happily approach the character if they whistle.

The Chao Gardens in the Sonic Adventure series have the ability to send Chao to an attached VMU (Visual Memory Unit) using the Transporter Machine (renamed to the Chao Transporter in Sonic Adventure 2). This results in the ability to play with the Chao away from the Dreamcast in a mini-games called Chao Adventure and Chao Adventure 2 respectively. The Chao walks on a path and is given a task. If done correctly, the player is rewarded with a fruit or seed which can be taken off the VMU and back onto Sonic Adventure 2 for planting. Seeds can be planted by a Chao with a watering can and a shovel, the latter which can be won in races in Sonic Adventure 2. In the Chao Adventure games, the player can also attach two VMUs to breed Chao, check the stats of a Chao, and name them. In Chao Adventure, the Chao does not age like it does in gardens.

In a similar vein, the Nintendo GameCube version of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle can communicate with the Game Boy Advance versions of Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2 to allow a two-way transfer of Chao gameplay data.

The Chao Kindergarten provides various facilities related to raising Chao.

In Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the player can also take their Chao to compete in Chao Karate in Chao Stadium. The Chao's stats determine their performance in this minigame as follows:

  • Swim: The Chao's defense stat. Higher values allow the Chao to mitigate more damage.
  • Fly: The Chao's stealth stat. Higher values increase the chance that the Chao will dodge its opponent's attacks.
  • Run: The Chao's overall movement.
  • Power: The Chao's attack power. Higher values allow the Chao to inflict more damage to the opponent and knock them further back. Initially, a Chao will only use simple punches or kicks to attack but when its Power stat reaches a certain value, they will perform spinning kicks and wind-up punches instead.
  • Stamina: The Chao's health stat.

Sonic Advance series

Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2

Main article: Tiny Chao Garden

Chao appear in the Game Boy Advance versions of Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2 where they are seen in the Tiny Chao Garden mode of both games. Chao-related game data can also be transferred to and from the GameCube versions of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

Sonic Advance 3

Sonic Advance 3 has a Chao Playground, which unlike a Chao Garden, is not for raising Chao. Instead, it is an area where the hidden Chao that the player has found during gameplay are located. When all ten of the Chao in the zone are found, the player can look for keys spread located throughout that zone's three acts that enables the player to use the Special Spring to play the Special Stage for that particular zone. If the Chaos Emerald is obtained for a Zone, then it will be seen floating in the Chao Playground of the Zone it was found in. The Chao Playground can be visited at any time via Factory Ring.

Sonic Battle

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Chao appear in certain sections of odd numbered Bonus Challenge Special Stages where one Dark Chao and one Normal Chao appear in a balloon and randomly toss a sphere or a mine for the player to collect or avoid respectively.

They are also featured in two of Team Chaotix missions; in Ocean Palace where they must collect one and in Lost Jungle where they must collect multiple Chao.

Shadow the Hedgehog

In Shadow the Hedgehog, there are several Chao wandering in Cryptic Castle. Shadow can attack the Chao to fill his Dark Gauge. Cheese can be attacked as well, but once touched is considered to be rescued.

Sonic Rivals series

Sonic Rivals

Various Chao artwork appear as some of the 150 collectable cards found in Sonic Rivals.

Sonic Rivals 2

The Chao play an important role in Sonic Rivals 2. At the beginning of the story, the Chao appeared to have gone missing and Sonic and Tails suspect that Eggman Nega (masquerading as Eggman himself) is behind the disappearance. In the meantime, Silver and Espio try to hide every Chao he can find from Eggman Nega's sight because of the doctor's intentions with the small creatures: he plans to feed them to a powerful beast named the 'Ifrit' which grants it invincibility and to be unleashed into Sonic's world, conquering the world with it. Later, Eggman Nega reveals to Espio and Silver that he has acquired more than enough Chao kept in a secret room of a mysterious mansion. Despite of this, Sonic and Tails discovered the secret room before Eggman Nega does and escorted the Chao away to safety.

The Chao are featured in one of the Battle games of Sonic Rivals 2 called Capture the Chao where the player has to find a route to their rival's base and capture the Chao there before the rival does the same to the player but the player's original Chao must still remain at the base for it to be counted. In Free Mode, there are ten Chao deployed in each act of the six zones and the player have to find and collect them (similar to Sonic Advance 3) to unlock cards. If the player acquires a Chao Detector (which each is unlocked by receiving a card) for a Zone, it can be used to find them easily in each zone.

Sonic Unleashed

In Sonic Unleashed, there is a day mission in Spagonia and a DLC Act in Shamar that both require Sonic to collect ten Normal Chao to complete the act. Additionally, the shy traveling merchant Wentos has a Chao hand puppet who does most of the "speaking" for him.

Sonic Colors

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, a mission in Tropical Resort shows Orbot and Cubot chasing a Chao that they think is an alien and Sonic has to rescue it.

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, there is a Challenge Act called Cream: Chao Hunt where Classic Sonic must collect enough Chao and beat Cream the Rabbit to the goal in Speed Highway. There is also a Challenge Act called Cream: Helping Hand where Modern Sonic must get through City Escape using rings provided to him by Chao.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, the Chao do not appear physically. However, one of the Costume backpacks the Avatar can wear is designed like a Chao.

Team Sonic Racing

ChaoTeamSonicRacing

A neutral, Dark, and Hero Chao, from Team Sonic Racing.

In Team Sonic Racing, a group of Chao consisting of a Normal Chao, Hero Chao, Dark Chao and Omochao appear as one of the playable characters (which are collectively referred to as "Chao"). In this game, they are members of Team Rose and Technique-Type characters. Their race car in this game is the Chao Pod. Neutral, Hero and Dark Chao also appear on the stands in the background of the race tracks, serving as the audience.

During the events of the game, Team Rose's Chao joined Amy and Big on a picnic before coming along with their team to join the Grand Prix organized by Dodon Pa. During the races, the Chao spectators would panic when they spotted Zavok, which alerted the other heroes to the red Zeti's presence. At the end of the game, the Chao helped take the non-flying members of Sonic's friends off the Final Fortress, which had begun to crash, in order to save them.

The Chao-shaped balloons also once again make an appearance during different outdoor events.

In the Nintendo Switch version of the game's story mode, Chao appear as minor non-playable characters that the player can speak to by approaching them. The Chao, however, will only speak in their own language, which consist of multiple uses of the word "Chao". Cheese also once again appears alongside Cream as one of the supporting characters that appear during different events.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, there is a Chao Garden where all Chao that have been found can be viewed and equipped. All Chao (with the exception of Cheese) can be obtained by collecting Chao Eggs and waiting a while for them to hatch. However, as with Sonic Advance 3, the garden is only for storing Chao, not interacting with or raising them. Taken out of the garden, however, they bond with the character they are attached to, and power them up with various effects in battle. A character can only be bonded with one Chao at a time.

Players can trade Chao with each other via the Nintendo DS wireless communications feature which can enhance the battle effects of these Chao.

Sonic Runners

In Sonic Runners, Chao appear as equipable Buddies.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

Main articles: Chao Guardians and Chao Chase

In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, the Chao make an appearance as a part of Tikal's Chao Guardians and Chao Chase power-ups.

Sonic Racing

A group of Chao that consists of a Normal Chao, Hero Chao, Dark Chao and Omochao appear in Sonic Racing as unlockable playable characters with their Chao Pod. They become available by reaching League 4. Several Chao also appear as part of the crowd that watch the races.

Sonic Speed Simulator

In Sonic Speed Simulator, Chao appear as both non-playable characters and notable gameplay elements. In the latter case, they serve to increase the amount of Experience Points and Rings that the player collects over the course of the game.

In gameplay, the player can buy Chao from vending machines, earn them from gifts, buy them directly from limited time shops in Green Hill, receive them as rewards when completing specific objectives during an event, receive them from Spin Wheels, or redeem them from codes. There are as well Chao that are only available for a limited time. These Chao tend to appear during different events where they can be earned by completing event objectives or buying them from stands in Green Hill.

The player can equip the playable character with three of any Chao to accompany them during gameplay, although that limit can be increased to a maximum of five with the +2 Pet Slots gamepass. Also, while equipped to the playable character, the Chao will gain Experience Points to level up with whenever the player collects Chaos Orbs, touches Sky Rings, or buys Experience Points from vending machines. Leveling up a Chao will improve the benefits they grant. The maximum level for all Chao is 99. The Experience Points gained for Chao is also not affected by Rebirth multipliers or the effects of other Chao or Trails.

While the player can carry up to twenty Chao by default, they can expand their number of holding shots for Chao by purchasing additional slots with a large amount of Robux. The player can also "enchant" a Chao in Enchantment Shrines, which will grant it one of six (originally seven) buffs. There, the player can, for the price of one million Rings, grant a Chao one of the following buffs: speed enhancement, power enhancement, XP heightening, Ring heightening, Magnet enhancement, and increased lucky draws. But that was prior to the Reborn update, so now the player has to make sure those 5 Chao are at the maximum pet level (level 25) in order to fuse them.

Animation

Sonic X

Sonic X ep 22 1002 59

A colony of Chao, from "Little Chao Lost".

In the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics, Chao were a species native to both Sonic's world and Earth. In this media, only Normal Chao appear (the comic introduced Dark Chao as well) and there is no mention of their lifecycles or their trait-borrowing skills.

In the old days, the Knuckles Clan would injure some Chao during an attack, incurring the wrath of their guardian, Chaos. Generations later, several Chao would appear to make Chaos happy following its defeat at the hands of Super Sonic.

Chao In Space

The Chao In Space animated short is based on the fictional, in-universe Chao in Space films. It features a Normal Chao dreaming about fighting a space battle, and contains many Chao-related references and Easter eggs.

Archie Comics

Pre-SGW Archie Chao

Chao, from Sonic the Hedgehog #171.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Chao were a species native to Mobius and the offspring of Chaos. In this media, their lifecycles and ability to borrow the traits of those exposed to them are fully adapted into the comic's canon. After the cast encounter the Chao during the incident with Chaos, they slowly moved into New Mobotropolis.

After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, the Chao have become virtually identical to their game counterparts.

Reception and impact

Chao and the Chao-raising system have received mixed to positive reviews. In a review of Sonic Adventure, GameSpot's Peter Bartholow stated that with "the Chao-breeding simulation and the minigames, Sonic offers much more beyond the completion of its story."[19] IGN stated that Sonic Adventure "more than has the extras department covered."[20] This enthusiasm was extended to IGN's reviews of Sonic Adventure 2,[21] Sonic Advance,[22] and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.[23] GameSpot's Shane Satterfield was critical of the Chao raising feature in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, stating that "there's little in the way of interactivity" and that "the [C]hao training aspect using the Game Boy Advance is little more than a novelty."[24] However, GameSpy's Shane Bettenhausen praised the feature in the game, comparing Chao to Tamagotchi digital pets.[25] GameSpot's Frank Provo noted the appeal to "those people who might only enjoy pinball in passing" that Chao brought to Sonic Pinball Party.[26] 1UP.com's Chris Baker called the Chao feature in Sega Superstars "ultimately worthless... ...but some might find it amusing."[27] In a review of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, GameSpot's Shiva Stella praised the level of strategy that the game's Chao system added.[28] Destructoid's Jim Sterling voiced a similar opinion, although saying that Chao had been "rubbish" in previous games.[29] In an official Sonic character poll by Sonic Team, the Chao were voted the sixth most popular characters in the series.[30]

A Chao keychain was released as part of a Sonic X character keychain series.[31] Between 27 July and 8 September 2002, Sega hosted events at Tokyo-based department stores to promote upcoming Sega video games. Attendees could download a "Chao Mini Garden" and exclusive Chao to their copies of Sonic Advance. Chao clothing clips, along with accessories based on other Sega characters, were available.[32]

Chao's notability extends beyond the Sonic series and related media; Mary Jane Irwin of IGN used "Chao program" to describe Pokémon Channel in her review of the game.[33]

Trivia

  • The Chao were voiced by Tomoko Sasaki in the periods of 1998-2001, 2004, and 2009–present. From 2003-2005, they were voiced by Ryō Hirohashi.
Chao-pian

A Chao and Nightopian.

  • Chao bear many physical similarities to the Nightopian from the NiGHTS series, another series by Sonic Team. This may be due to the Chao system using an advanced version of the A-life system that was originally used in NiGHTS into Dreams; additionally, the Neutral/Fly Chao resembles NiGHTS in appearance, while the Dark/Fly/Normal Chao resembles Reala.
  • In the cutscenes for Sonic Adventure, Chao had different models from those used in the Chao Garden. They had different shaped wings, similar to those of Hero Chao.
  • Through a secret mission in Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II, a game created by Sonic Team, it is possible to receive a "Tails Chao". This Chao resembles Tails to a great extent and cannot die or reproduce, much like a Chaos Chao.
  • Chao were very fragile to raise in the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure, meaning that they could die quickly if they were abused too much to an extent, even if they were still a child. Players can potentially get locked out of 100% completion if they did this to all of their Chao, including the special ones that can be found in the respective Adventure fields.
  • It is possible for Chao to sleep while they're sitting upright, with their wings tucked in like when sleeping on their back.
  • On the Sonic Adventure 2 official soundtrack, Multi-Dimensional, there is an instrumental song with Chao singing (or rather making Chao noises) in the background. This song plays in Chao Kindergarten.
  • Sonic Adventure states that the Chao Gardens were created in protected environments. Ironically enough, it is possible to drown when playing as the character Tails in either water pool in the Egg Carrier or Mystic Ruins Chao Gardens. It is also possible to die by jumping off the cliff or throw a Chao off to make it disappear in the Mystic Ruins Garden. In Sonic Adventure DX, this was changed: if a character falls out of a garden by using other glitches, they will appear in the middle of the garden without dying.
    • Also, in Sonic Adventure 2, while playing as Tails in the Dark Garden, going to the deepest part of the pool near the cave is deep enough for Tails to be successfully submerged in the water, causing him to eventually drown in the water. Tails is the only character who can drown because he is shorter than everyone else.
  • It is possible to move a Chao from a Nintendo GameCube into a Game Boy Advance without a Sonic Advance game. This creates a temporary Tiny Chao Garden and is useful for moving Chao between Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, whilst also making a clone of the Chao that was transferred. This garden also changes version depending on the game the Game Boy Advance downloaded it from.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure DX, Chao can die while still shaking their heads as they enter the cocoon.
  • In Sonic Adventure DX, a monitor in the Station Square Garden can bring up a hint menu. One of the hints is to watch the Chao's Stamina bar during races, but the stat has no effect on them since it was nonexistent in the Sega Dreamcast version of the game.
Pacifier

The pacifier's effect, from Sonic Adventure 2.

  • In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure DX, a pacifier was originally meant to be an accessory for a Chao but got scrapped; it can still be used via cheats/hacking, but it makes the Chao's head disappear. The reason for this is likely because a separate model of both the Chao's head and pacifier was to be used in its place. The Sonic Adventure 2 mod Chao World Extended made the pacifier an accessory slot so that both the Chao's head and pacifier are visible.
Glitch Toy

The match's behavior, from Sonic Adventure 2.

  • A match toy (dubbed as the "unknown (glitch toy?)" in Fusion's Chao Editor) was meant for the Chao in the Sonic Adventure 2 Chao Garden, but it was scrapped. However, it can still be used through hacking or a Chao editor. When the Chao uses the toy while bored, it holds the match for several seconds without moving, then the behavior stops; it was likely intended to be used to light the unused firecracker and bomb toys.
  • Occasionally, a Chao will draw a picture of a Normal Chao on the ground. If a Chao is cared for frequently a lot, it may occasionally draw a picture of the playable character. Sometimes they draw a cake or pizza-like picture to show that they are hungry.
  • In the Sonic Adventure series, Chao made baby noises, and in Sonic Heroes, they could even speak small sentences, such as Cheese saying "It's Chocola Chao". However, the only thing most Chao can say in recent games is the word chao.
  • In the original Sonic Adventure, E-102 Gamma can attack Chao by locking on to them and firing at them. In all other ports, Gamma cannot attack Chao.
  • While in a Chao Garden, if there is a Chao above you for whatever reason (in the cage in the Dark Garden or flying around), you can jump to hit the Chao, causing the same effect to happen if you were to throw, jump on, or attack the Chao.
  • During the development of Sonic Adventure, it was suggested Chao be called "Chicka Monkeys," so not to confuse players with Chaos.
RoL concept art Chao

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric concept art.

  • Chao were originally meant to appear in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, where they would resemble small dragons.
  • Normal Chao have the Fly Type as their ability type.[34]
  • According to Takashi Iizuka, Chao need very clean and pure water to survive, which is why they are not seen in too many places.[35]
  • According to the Chao In Space short animation, Chao are seemingly capable of feats of incredible physical strength, as a sleepwalking Chao was able to punch Eggman in the face with enough force to send him flying.
