The Captive Light takes the form of a bright sparkling light with small stars surrounding it. On the tracks, it appears as a bright and sparkling pale yellow glowing orb.
In gameplay, the Captive Light can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Tikal. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Captive Light if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned user.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Captive Light by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the Captive Light's orb form will appear in front of the user's next rival if the user is behind said rival. If the user is leading the race however, it will appear on the lane directly behind them. If a character collides with the Captive Light (including the user), the player's screen will be obscured by a bright light. The effects of the Captive Light will only last for a short time however. To avoid the Captive Light, the playable character has to either step out of its lane or jump over it.
The Captive Light can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 4, 10 and 16 respectively. For each upgrade, the blinding effect of the Captive Light will be increased.
