The Buzz Bomber,[1] also known as Buz Bomber,[2] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, bee-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and the counterpart of the Buzz Bomber from an alternate dimension set in the recent past.

Appearance

Buzz Bombers resemble a mechanical mud dauber with a black coloring around its spherical thorax. The stingers at the tips of their blue-striped abdomens is a rail detonator cannon. Two mechanical devices resembling pale wings give them the ability to hover each. Also, two engines are installed into the sides of the Buzz Bombers. Finally, they have a blue head with cartoony eyes, two mandibles and yellow antennae each.

Game appearances

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Buzz Bombers appear as enemies alongside the yellow Buzzers in Green Hill Act 1. In gameplay, they are more uncommon than Buzzers, and simply fly towards the player without launching any attacks at Classic Sonic.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Buzz Bombers are enemies found in both Acts of Green Hill Zone. In gameplay, Buzz Bombers fly alone or in a group from the side of the screen. When they find the playable character, they will halt in mid-air, retract their stingers, and fire a projectile diagonally downward before flying away. These projectiles can be deflected by using Shield-derived power-ups or through Mighty's Spin Attack. The player is able to destroy Buzz Bombers by attacking them with a Spin Attack-related move. Upon their destruction, they will release an Animal and award the player with 100 points.

Powers and abilities

Buzz Bombers are capable of flight, and are capable of instantly moving at incredible speeds that rival Sonic's, who can run at supersonic speeds[3] (which ranges from 915-3,840 mph). They can also fire projectiles through their stingers.

The Poh-Bee is a melee variation of the Buzz Bomber. These flying Badniks, instead of being equipped with stinger-like guns, have maces attached to their abdomens via chains which they swing around to attack foes. They first appeared in Sonic Mania.

In other media

IDW Publishing

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Buzz Bombers are the counterparts of the Buzz Bombers from another dimension set in the recent past. Like their counterparts, they are Badniks that assist Dr. Eggman, with a past virtually identical to their video game counterparts', up until after the events of Sonic Mania.
