The Burrobot (モグリン,Mogurin?) is a recurring enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are mole-based Badnik models created by Dr. Eggman which first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). Using their drill-like nose, they launch surprise attacks from underground.
Burrobots are seemingly loosely based on European Mole. They have a blue body consisting of a round torso and a large head with round black eyes, grey disks for ear pieces and a large grey cone-shaped drill bit for a nose. On their head they wear a yellow hard hat. Their chest is grey, their shoulders are yellow and round, and their two arms are grey with three sharp fingers on each hand. As legs, they have tracked wheels on each side, which runs between two wheels; one is small and one is bigger.
Burrobots in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I are more detailed. The ear pieces have red bottom placed screws and their tracked feet have a elastic bands between their wheels. In Sonic Lost World, they wear yellow goggles while digging.
Powers and abilities
Burrobots uses their nose-based drills to burrow through the ground. There, they remain hidden beneath the enemies' feet, waiting until the enemy is close enough. Burrobots then attack to from underground with their noses facing upwards.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
Burrobots first appeared in the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog, where they are featured in Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. In this game, Burrobots appear either alone or in groups. Their noses can be seen poking out of the ground so it is easy to spot where they will pop out of to attack the play. As they jump out of the ground, the player can use a well-timed Spin Jump to defeat them.
In the 8-bit version of the game with same name, Burrobots appear only in Labyrinth Zone. Otherwise, they have the same attack pattern as their 16-bit counterpart. However, Burrobots, along with the other Badniks, do not have Animals inside of them.
In the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, Burrowbots have their original design. During the game, it turns out that the Badniks, including the Burrobots, got hijacked by the Deadly Six. In this game, Burrobots appear wide-spaced sections of Frozen Factory Zone 1. When they pop out of the ground to attack the player, they often end up getting stuck in the ground with their drill nose.
A single Burrobot also appear in the underground section of Silent Forest Zone 4. It is capable of attacking the player when they are underground using Yellow Drill. However again, this Badnik can get stuck on floating stone circles should it collide with it. The player can defeat it by ramming into its non-drill spots with the Yellow Drill.
Burrobots also frequently appeared in early issues of Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, as members of Doctor Robotnik's Badnik army. Because of different artists, Burrobots have different looks in the stories. However as Robotnik has designed new digging Badnik models, Burrobots mostly have been replaced. At one time Shorty the Squirrel's friend Hopper actually turned into a Burrobot until he was freed soon after when Shorty turned against Robotnik. Also at one time Tails disguised himself as a Burrobot.
In the Sonic X comic series published by Archie Comics, Burrobots appear in a virtual reality version of the Labyrinth Zone. For Sonic and his group's surprise, two of Burrobots drill out the ground in front of Sonic and one of them manages to wound Rouge by using its drill part. Knuckles then destroys one of the them while Sonic deals with another one as both freeing two Rockies inside of them.[1]
Merchandise
The toy company TOMY has released Burrobot action figurine during the release of Sonic & Knuckles as it also includes a series of twenty-two Sonic figurines and these figurines came in packs of four under the Sonic & Knuckles label and were also released individually under a Sonic the Hedgehog label.
Trivia
Mogura is Japanese for mole while moguri means diver.
In both 16-bit and 8-bit versions of Sonic the Hedgehog, some of the Burrobot's exterior armor is shown to be red, instead of yellow as shown in the artwork due to palette issues. The upgraded appearance of Burrobot in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 uses artwork colors with detailed mechanic parts being colored red.
A Burrobot-like Badnik was considered to be enemy for scrapped R2 of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, but the enemy was not included in the final release.
