— Bunker the Tortoise, Sonic the Hedgehog #281

Bunker the Tortoise,[2] also referred to as Bunker the Turtle,[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. She is a mobian tortoise and a member of the Shijin Warriors. She is also the shrine matron of the Shijin Shrine.

Appearance[]

Bunker is a short dark and light green mobian tortoise with a stocky body and a short tail. She has a large black shell on her back with a dark green swirl in the middle. For attire, she wears a yellow gi with red trim and obi, yellow gloves with white cuffs and red-ruffed trim, and black shoes with red and white accents.[2]

History[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Bunker's past, apart from the fact that when Dulcy announced a call to arms, Bunker was one of the few who responded, and joined her cause. She later became the matron of the Shijin Shrine.[2]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act Two[]

Bunker first met the Freedom Fighters when they came to Chun-Nan in search of Zonshen. Dulcy had invited them to lunch after she helped them fend off Silver Sonic. While they ate, Bunker talked with Sally about Zonshen, stating that he frequented the temple grounds to make offerings to the phoenix spirit. When Dulcy talked about her past and how what Sonic, Sally, and Tails taught her convinced her to return home and teach her people the same thinking, Bunker chimed in that it was working to some extent, even if it was a slow process.[2]

Bunker later joined the others outside Chun-Nan's Gaia Temple to look for Zonshen. After witnessing Sonic transform into the Werehog, she noted how pure he was despite his changes, remarking that it humbled her to know that he had maintained his chi so well. She then stated she would make an effort to meditate more. After learning that Conquering Storm had taken over the temple, Bunker joined the others in executing an ambush. After the success of said ambush, Bunker joined her allies in celebrating their victory.[3]

Personality[]

Bunker has a calm and welcoming demeanor, necessary for her ability to sense chi. In spite of her mellow appearance though, she will fight intensively.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

Thanks to her calm mind, Bunker has the ability to sense the chi of those around her and herself. She is also efficient in combat and is said to pack quite the punch.[1][3]

Trivia[]

  • Bunker's appearance is a reference to the Black Tortoise of the Sixiang, a mythical beast that represents the Chinese cardinal direction of north and the season of winter.
