Bugernaut[1] (ブンブーン[2] Bun-bun?) is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, horsefly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik.

Based on the horsefly, Bugernauts have a small blue body with a pair of large superposition eyes, four big wings and a cylinder-shaped abdomen on their back.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its lock-on continuation Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Bugernauts are found in Hydrocity Zone, and come in two sizes: a larger Bugernaut may be followed by a smaller one, but only the larger one can be destroyed. Buggernauts remain stationary above water surfaces, but will start buzzing around and charge at the playable characters when they approach them.

When the player defeats a larger Bugernaut by using a Spin Jump, the small Bugernaut becomes vulnerable and seeks out the nearest larger Bugernaut to follow it. If there are no large Bugernauts nearby, the smaller one flies away.

Sonic Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Bugernauts appear as enemies. In terms of design, they look exactly like they did in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In these games, they appear exclusively in Hydrocity Zone.

In gameplay, the Bugernauts behave just like in their debut appearance: they will buzz around the player in pairs when the player get close, and the smaller one will flee to a new large one or escape if its partner gets smashed. Also, upon destroying a Bugernaut, it will release an Animal.

Powers and abilities

With their wings, the Bugernauts are capable of flight.
