Buddies, also known as companions,[1] are objects that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a type of ability-granting follower that a playable character can bring along in stages to aid their performance.

Description[]

Buddies are floating followers, akin to RC Vehicles, that take various forms. Some of them take the appearance of different forms of RC Vehicles. Most of them however, look like objects and characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, such as Chip, Caliburn, Chao, the Tornado, the Death Egg, etc. For certain crossover events in their respective games however, buddies resembling elements from other franchises, like NiGHTS and Carbuncle, are also introduced.

In gameplay, buddies can be equipped to playable characters and brought along with said characters for their runs through stages. During a playthrough, buddies can be seen floating right behind the playable characters. In stages, buddies each grant unique and special abilities to the playable characters. This can include raising scores or even enhancing item effects.[1] Buddies also have different mechanics and attributes that depend on the games they appear in.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Runners series[]

Sonic Runners[]

Sonic Runners Knuckles Gameplay

Knuckles with two buddies accompanying him in Lava Mountain, from Sonic Runners.

In Sonic Runners, buddies were originally called companions[1] before being renamed in a game update. Twenty buddies were available at the game's debut,[1] which expanded to 94 buddies by the time the game's servers closed.

In gameplay, the playable character can be equipped with up to two different buddies during a stage, each one granting its own ability at the same time. In addition, each buddy in this game has two fundamental attributes applied to it. The first is its rarity level, which can be "Normal", "Rare", or "S Rare" (Super-Rare[2]); the rarer the buddy, the more powerful its ability is.[2] The second attribute is its character type, which can be Speed, Fly, or Power. If a buddy is paired up with a matching character type (for example, a Speed Type buddy with a Speed Type playable character), then the buddy's ability will receive a performance boost that amplifies its ability.[1] In addition, while following a playable character in a stage, the buddy can pick up any Animals it touches on behalf of the playable character. Also, some buddies are bigger than others when out in the stages, As such, the bigger the buddy, the more Animals it has the chance of picking up.[3]

The player can obtain buddies from Chao Eggs. These can be earned by playing the Premium Roulette.[4] The rarity of the buddies earned from the Premium Roulette are determined accordingly:

  • Normal: Only available on the BIG and SUPER roulette wheel within the Premium Roulette
  • Rare. Only available on the Premium Roulette and the Special Roulette, unlocked when the spinner lands on a segment with a grey, Rare Egg.
  • S Rare: Only available on the Premium Roulette and the Special Roulette, unlocked when the spinner lands on a segment with a golden, Super-Rare Egg.

The game also features event buddies. These buddies are acquired by playing the Premium Roulette while an event is underway. Event buddies have extra event-specific powers in addition to their normal abilities. Using event buddies is highly recommended when aiming for the top on the Event Rankings.

Should the player earn a buddy that they already have, that buddy's level will increase by one, improving its ability. A buddy can be leveled to a maximum of level ten. If the player gets a buddy that they already have and it is also at maximum level, the player will get a Special Egg instead. Collect ten Special Eggs and the player will be rewarded with a a Rare or S Rare buddy when playing the Special Roulette.[5]

Sonic Runners Adventure[]

BuzzBomberSRA

Shadow with two buddies accompanying him in Green Hill, from Sonic Runners Adventure.

In Sonic Runners Adventure, the buddies made a return. In this game, there are a total of eleven buddies to choose from.

In gameplay, the buddies' mechanics have been significantly simplified. Although they still grant special abilities to the playable characters during a playthrough, they have no other mechanics beside that. In this game, the playable character can be equipped with up to two different buddies during a stage, each one granting its own ability at the same time.

The player can obtain buddies by purchasing them from the Team menu with Rings while others are unlocked as the player progresses with the game.
