Looks like a regular item. If collected, locks out an item and demands ransom for its release.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Booby Trap is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Trap Item used primarily to obstruct opposing rivals' path.

The Booby Trap takes the form of a purple and glowing Item Box with an upside-down yellow question mark inside it, both as an icon and on the tracks.

In gameplay, the Booby Trap can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Rouge and Witch Rouge. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Booby Trap if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned users.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Booby Trap by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the Booby Trap will drop its Item Boxes some distance ahead of the user's current location on all the lanes that the user is not currently on. If a playable character, including the user themselves, touches one of these Item Boxes, their Item slots on the bottom of the HUD will be locked, thus preventing the player from using the power-ups stored in them and making it impossible to store other power-ups in those slots. To unlock the Item slots, the player must spend a certain amount of Rings they have collected on each of the Item slots by pressing their sealed icons on the HUD while in possession of enough Rings. To avoid the Booby Traps, the playable character must either jump over their Item Boxes or run in-between them.

The Booby Trap can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 4, 10 and 16 respectively. For each upgrade, the players have to spend more Rings to unlock the Item slots locked by the Booby Trap.
