The Booby Trap takes the form of a purple, glowing glass capsule with an upside-down yellow question mark inside it.
In gameplay, the Booby Trap can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Rouge and Witch Rouge. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Booby Trap if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned user.
When used, fake Item Boxes will be dropped some distance ahead of the user's current location on all lanes that the user is not currently on. Touching a Booby Trap with a playable character (including the user) will cause the player's Item slots to be blocked. This means that power-ups in these Item slots cannot be used, nor can the blocked Item slots be used to store new power-ups. To unlock one's Item slots, the player must spend some of the Rings they have collected. The Booby Trap can be upgraded for each individual user by leveling them to levels 4, 10 and 16, increasing the amount of Rings needed to unlock the Item slots.
To avoid Booby Traps, the player must either jump over them or run in between them.
