The Bomb (ボム[1][2] Bomu?), also referred to as Bomb Bot,[3] is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. As the name implies, it is a mass-produced, bomb-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman. The player cannot usually destroy them, as Bombs can self-destruct and inflict damage on a player.

Appearance

Bomb 2

The Bomb in Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit).

The usual Bomb has a simple red-and-grey round body with two mechanical legs. However, the details in its design have varied between games, even between their in-game sprites and official artwork.

Bombs in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) are red with their upper hemisphere covered in a grey metal layer. They also have two sharp-pointed legs in artwork, but in gameplay they have simple blue legs. Official artwork shows them having yellow metal buttons on each side, but in gameplay they have two yellow and blue buttons instead. Also, in gameplay they have a low tube above the body, vents and an ignite wire, but in artwork the latter two are excluded. The Bomb's sprites and artwork in the 8-bit version of the game are identical though.

In the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Bombs' design is slightly altered. They have cubic holes instead of buttons and have legs similar to those in the gameplay from the previous title. In the 2012 remake of Sonic Jump, Bombs look like their artwork from the first game, except they now have an antenna. In Sonic Lost World, they have a red and black color scheme and yellow eyes with no pupils.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)

Bomb-spr

The first appearance of this Badnik was in the original 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog, where it served as an enemy. This time around, this Badnik is referred to as Bomb (ボム[1] Bomu?) in Japanese material, but is unnamed in western materials. In this game, the player encounters them in Star Light Zone and Scrap Brain Zone.

In gameplay, Bombs walk back and forth, either on the ground or ceiling. However, the player cannot destroy these enemies. Instead, Bombs explode into a shower of harmful projectiles when approached. The best action is thus to ignore them. Bombs can also appear in large groups, especially in Star Light Zone. When they are destroyed though, they do not release an Animal or grant the player any points.

Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)

In Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit), the Bomb appears as an enemy again, where it is referred to as Bomb (ボム[2] Bomu?). In this game, several appear in Sky Base Zone Act 1 and a single Bomb appear in Sky Base Zone Act 2. These Badniks are smaller than their 16-bit counterparts.

When approached, a Bomb will explode into four glowing energy balls that will scatter around it without granting the player points. The Bombs also cannot be damaged by Sonic's attacks, so it is best to just avoid them.

In the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Bombs appear in Gimmick Mt. Zone and Scrambled Egg Zone. The Bombs act like they did in the previous title, although they load and explode faster than before when approached. Bombs in this game also respond after the player comes back to the same place.

Sonic Chaos

Is this same badnik or not

Badniks similar to the Bombs, also appear in Sonic Chaos as enemies. These enemies are unnamed in the manuals and supplementary material. They can only be found in Electric Egg Zone.

In gameplay, when the player comes across them, they shake for a second before then exploding immediately after when the player get next to them. Like Bombs though, they launch harmful projectiles when destroyed. They also do not contain any Animals.

Sonic Jump (2012)

In the 2012 remake of Sonic Jump, Bombs are featured in Mountain Zone. In this game, Bombs walk back and forth on the platforms and will self-destruct as the player jump close to them. For first time in the series, it is possible to destroy Bombs from below by jumping into them before they explode.

Sonic Lost World

In the Wii U/PC version of Sonic Lost World, the Bomb returned with a new design. During the game, it turns out that the Badniks, including the Bombs, got hijacked by the Deadly Six. In this game, the Bombs will activate themselves when they see Sonic coming and start following him for as long as they can until they explode.

Bombs can be found in Frozen Factory Zone 2, where Sonic is turned into a large snowball. Here, they move around in small groups on flat routes. The player can destroy them by jumping on them though. However, Bombs can also stick to the snowball like other items in the Zone, which the player must quickly deal out before they explode.

Bombs also appear in Silent Forest Zone 3, where they behave like they did in earlier games. When they detonate, they will release harmful projectiles around them. Also, in The Legend of Zelda Zone, the player must lure a Bomb to a wall where it will detonate and reveal a hidden cave so the player can proceed through the Zone.

Powers and abilities

Bombs walk very slowly and stop in their tracks when the player is in close proximity. When they stop, they automatically ignite their own fuse for few seconds, resulting in a kamikaze attack. When they explode, four black and red glowing projectiles fly into the air. In Sonic Lost World, Bombs can home in on their target once they see it walk by before they self-destruct.

Trivia

  • Bombs are some of the earlier Badniks that are do not have Animals as an energy source in any of their appearance.
  • The Bomb was one of Badniks left out of the western instruction manuals of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), as well they are not featured early on in Archie Comics, which featured most of the other first-generation Badniks (including Splats who was not actually in the game). The only other Badnik to not appear was Spikes.
  • The Bomb's legs are similar to the Roller's and Ball Hog's in artwork illustration.
  • There are enemies in the Mario franchise called Bob-ombs, which have a similar attack. However, Bombs are not as mobile and throw numerous projectiles around after exploding.
