I dreamt I was playing the demo version of an upcoming Sonic Boom game. It was a lot like RoL but the combat was removed and the controls were similar to SC/F&I and Sonic Lost World.
The first hub was a forest at night (It looked a lot like the forests of Teldrassil) with secret caves leading to underground ruins for it's stages. Team Sonic had to work together to collect a single Dragon Ring to finish the stage. (I never played Fire & Ice yet so not sure what these rings are used for other than what the article states.) For some reason the friends realise they were being my hypocritical of their behavior which they believed was caused by either the dragon rings or some unknown power.
The second hub world was called "Tuff Towers", it looked like a grimey steampunk/industrial city. I remember in my dream there were these teleport pads that require you to press to work to access the stages. It was then I was aware I was dreaming because I was playing the whole game with my mind. I went over and talked to someone who looked in charge and said that since Tuff Towers is a place about development, suggested I should make the required button I wanted to use to play the stage. After seeing some bubbles from a nearby quarrey lake which excited the locals I went to the teleporter and "dreamt up" a blue X button and I got to play as Boom Sonic climbing a cyclindrical tower with Parkour like abilities while digger bots (yellow robots that looked like digger trucks) erupted from the ground making him loose his rings.
Given the game was WIP in my dream, Those digger bots were rather tough and still wasn't used to the Shattered Crystal/Lost World like controls. Just because it as an awesome dream didn't mean I win at this game. Sadly the dream ended before I could progress anymore but I was very satisfied with it.
Cool

Wow, that actually sounds kinda cool.
Yeah, if I ever decide to make a Sonic Boom fan game will take pointers from this dream. Rise of Lyric would of perhaps been better off if it had Sonic Lost World like gameplay.
Let's humour the idea that for Wii U or Switch there will be a new Sonic Boom game. What exactly would you all like in it?
From that dream I had, I liked the idea of Shattered Crystal/Fire & Ice gameplay combined with Sonic Lost World gameplay. I've also been watching the Kingdom Hearts 3 demo and I like the idea of combat being as fluid and pretty as KH games usually are. It be nice if the clunky combat was replaced with something more KHish.
I would also like revise use of enerbeams and maybe each player have own HP gauge, or at least a team shared one. Single rings can restore the gauge by 1 point but not be reliant on it. As for enerbeams I can imagine different uses for them such as whips, reings for big enemies, a yoyo-pinwheel weapon for Sonic and the ability to activate generators or explode certain containers by concentrating charge your enerbeam.
Also, ideas to be able to switch players in "Team Sonic" for other players such as Shadow, Perci and maybe even Og and Burnbot.
I was thinking a game where the characters actually moved fast through an open-world Bygone Island, with all five members of Team Sonic onscreen at once and able to be switched to at anytime (in multiplayer scenarios, the remaining character(s) would be controlled by AI), though like Mystic suggested, it would be cool if you could switch them out for other characters. Each character would have their own health bar and, if downed, would be able to be revived for a brief window of time. The lives mechanic would make it so that if all characters go down, it's back to a checkpoint with one less life.
Combat would be better and less repetitive than Rise of Lyric-- each character would have their own combos and special abilities (Sonic would have the Spin Dash, Tails would use gadgets, Knuckles would have his ground pound move, Amy would be able to spin around like a tornado swinging her hammer, Sticks would have multiple equippable weapons, etc.) There would even be a Dash Attack available when a character reaches max speed. Think recent action games. Of course, Enerbeams would return and be usable in the environment and battle. Wouldn't be Boom without 'em. Perhaps some RPG elements thrown in, too.
There would be several enemies onscreen at once taken from Eggman's variety of robots in the cartoon, perhaps with some of the larger ones as minibosses. Other villains from the cartoon might appear as well.
The gang would also have team-up moves with each other (for example, Amy hitting a curled-up Sonic like a croquet ball as seen in "Fuzzy Puppy Buddies"), which would do a lot of damage to one or multiple enemies. Perhaps even multiple vehicles for use, such as Tails' Plane or Sonic's Mech Suit.
Other than that, typical stuff (completing story-based and optional missions, finding secrets hidden in the world, etc.), and writing would be largely similar to the cartoon, though with a bigger plot.
Not much special in here that hasn't been taken from other games, but you know what they say about imitation.
A radically alternate idea I considered is a Sonic Boom game thats like an RPG, with turn based combat.

I suspect this going towards Elder Scrolls/ Witcher combat right?

I'm thinking more classic Final Fantasy like combat.
Building on GoldBolt's suggestion, I have an idea for the basic speed levels. Basically, the water running sections in RoL. Unlike the regular running stages, water running gives you better control, is not as repetitive or stiff, and just has a better "Sonic" feel to it. To fit this, levels would have to be a little be less liner than usual, perhaps with multiple choice paths scattered in between. Of course, the Enerbem would be used, but more like grind rails, in that you can switch between two or more symmetrical rails, with obstacles and dead ends sprinkled around. And, obviously, the homing attack, for perhaps enemies leading to higher or lower ledges.
I'd just impliment water running gameplay into the standard gameplay if I can.
Sonic can't swim, in yet he moves faster on water than land.
