Tangle, this is Blaze. She's a princess from another dimension and guardian of the Sol Emeralds. They're like Chaos Emeralds, but fiery.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog #4

Blaze the Cat is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. She is an anthropomorphic cat from another dimension, where she is the princess of the Sol Empire and the guardian of the Sol Emeralds.

Appearance

Blaze is a lavender and violet-furred, anthropomorphic cat with gold eyes, a small black nose and a white-furred muzzle. She has triangular ears with peach colored canals and a long tail with the end frayed and dark purple. Her fur is longer on each side of her head and sweeps slightly upwards. She has four plumes of hair with dark purple tips done up in a high ponytail by a red hair tie. She also has a red oval gem on her forehead, resembling a bindi.

For attire, Blaze wears a purple tailcoat with dark pink trim, a gold collar, and white leggings. She also wears white gloves with fluffy cuffs and dark pink, high-heeled shoes with white stripes and fluffy cuffs, like her gloves.

History

Past

For some unknown period of time, Blaze has been the guardian of the Sol Emeralds.[2] When she first met Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, Blaze, being a loner, was a bit "defensive" about approaching them.[4] However, Blaze eventually warmed up to them, who became her first real friends. Sonic thus became one of her most trusted allies.[2]

Fallout

Axel Jump

While in her home world, Blaze felt the will of the Sol Emeralds. They instructed her to go to Sonic's world to help prevent a "terrible event". Blaze managed to travel to Sonic's world and ended up in Spiral Hill Village as it was being overrun by Dr. Eggman's Badniks. There, Blaze teamed up with Sonic and new ally Tangle the Lemur to fight off the robots. After they were defeated, Blaze explained her reasoning for coming to Sonic's world. As Sonic believed Blaze was referring to Eggman's recent takeover, he told her that she was "seven months late" from what already took place. However, Tangle noted the Badniks participating in more organized attacks might be the beginning of something worse on the way. Blaze relayed the fact that the Sol Emeralds would not have guided her to Sonic's world for no reason and decided to stay until her purpose became clear, to which Sonic agreed with. She subsequently aided Tangle with clearing out the fires in Spiral Hill Village while Sonic investigated the matter.[2]

Battle For Angel Island

Eventually, Blaze was called to Resistance HQ. There, she and the Resistance's other allies were informed that the Resistance needed their help to liberate Angel Island, which had been conquered by Neo Metal Sonic and turned into a flying fortress. To make matters worse, Neo had also secured the Master Emerald for himself on the island. While Amy presented the group with her battle plan, Blaze offered a more direct approach: let her become Burning Blaze with the Sol Emeralds and allow her to confront Neo. However, Tails convinced Blaze that it was not wise, given that Neo could potentially copy Blaze's powers and become too powerful. Instead, Blaze was tasked with helping one faction of the group break the Egg Fleet's control over the island while Sonic and Knuckles confronted Neo.[4]

On their way to Angel Island, Blaze had a talk with Amy. When Blaze wondered if their lonesome ally Whisper could be trusted, Amy reminded her that she used to be a lone wolf herself. Reflecting on how far she had come, Blaze agreed with Amy that they would win the day after assuring her that she would be careful. When the Egg Fleet then began bombarding their ship, Blaze had to abandon the ship and begin her attack. Using the Sol Emeralds, she became Burning Blaze and started attacking the Egg Fleet's vessels while thinking about how far she would go to protect her friends.[4] She was soon after contacted by Amy, and told her that she would be with the others soon. As her battle against the Egg Fleet continued however, Blaze noticed that her transformation was beginning to run out. Seeking to finish her part of the plan now, Blaze channeled the last of her strength into a massive attack that blew the Egg Fleet's left wing unit on Angel Island off the island. Her powers drained, Blaze de-transformed and landed on Angel Island.[5]

Destroythewing

Blaze and Tangle destroying one of Master Overlord's wings, from Sonic the Hedgehog #11.

As Angel Island began to fall, Blaze took flight, wondering if she caused this. She soon after met up with the rest of her team onboard an Egg Fleet battleship that Tails had secured, during which Amy informed her that the island's descent was due to the absence of the Master Emerald. Knuckles later contacted them to request Burning Blaze's help, but Blaze revealed that she could not transform again due to the Sol Emeralds being low on power. When Master Overlord (a transformation Neo Metal Sonic had achieved with the Master Emerald) then attacked the battleship, Blaze joined her allies in a midair assault on Master Overlord, whom they forced closer to Angel Island while Knuckles focused on removing the Master Emerald from Master Overlord's body. During the battle, Blaze got shaken off Master Overlord, but was rescued by Silver with his psychokinesis. Knuckles subsequently got the Master Emerald away from Master Overlord and brought it back to Angel Island, returning the island to the sky while Master Overlord powered down to normal. With the battle over, Blaze was brought down on Angel Island where she thanked Whisper for her aid.[6]

As everyone got ready to leave Angel Island onboard a repaired Egg Fleet battleship, Blaze and Silver would chat with each other. When Sonic then came to check up on them and hear their next move, Blaze told Sonic that her work here was done and that she would return to her own world with the Sol Emeralds, although not before seeing everyone else home first. She also heard that Silver, who had a nagging feeling that his time was not saved from desolation just yet, planned on staying in Sonic's time for now. Blaze and Silver were then left to themselves while Sonic checked on the others.[7]

Victory Garden

Annual 2019 Silver Blaze Garden

Blaze and Silver growing vegetables in Silver's garden. from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2019.

Following Amy's directions, Blaze came to a ruined city in order to find Silver. Upon finding Silver, Blaze learned that he was trying to grow vegetables in his own garden, but the plants did not want to grow. After taking a look at the plants that did grow, Blaze burned the earth and told Silver to use the ashes to fertilize the soil. She explained to him that the land on which he wanted to grow plants was acidified and heavy as a result of the bombs that had been dropped there. Silver proceeded to execute Blaze's orders, and thanks to her help, he managed to create a functioning vegetable garden.[8]

Out of the Blue

Some time later back in her world, Blaze looked out from a balcony at the Imperial Palace. Gardon came by to give the evening security report, only to reveal that there was nothing to report and all was peaceful. Blaze was pleased with this news, saying that it may be his report for many nights to come. Just then, a crash was heard outside of the palace. When Blaze ran to investigate it, Gardon followed and warned her of the potential danger. Blaze replied saying that if it was something that threatened her in her own home, she would show it who was "dangerous". At the small crater of the crash site, Blaze and Gardon found none other than a passed out Sonic.[1] It was revealed that Sonic had lost his memory and could not remember what had occurred before he arrived in Blaze's world; he could not even recall his own identity but accepted being called "Mr. Needlemouse" by a young girl he met there. Sonic did mention that there was nothing concrete and his memories seemed warped; he dreamt of sea and sky, of golden fire and a sense of falling, and nothing more. Blaze continued to ponder who did this to Sonic and asked herself what was happening on his world at that moment.[3] Later, Blaze greeted Sonic after he returned from a run around the island, while she had Gardon bring her the Sol Emeralds. Believing, as their guardian, that the Sol Emeralds could help restore Sonic's memory, Blaze used their power to transform into Burning Blaze and showed Sonic his memories in her flames. Fortunately, Blaze's plan worked, and Sonic was restored to normal. Blaze then heard that Sonic had just saved his world with the help of Silver, though she repress discontent with how it led to him crashing in her garden with amnesia. Sonic, however, noted that it was in his nature to make spectacular entrances and apologized for all the confusion. Blaze then agreed to send Sonic back to his world, although not before asking him to give Amy and Cream her regards. She also promised Sonic to visit his world someday soon.[9]

Personality

Solemn, calm and collected in battle, Blaze is a noble soul. Initially, she was a bit of a loner and somewhat defensive. However, she eventually warmed up to the concept of friendship and became more sociable and positive as a result of her new relationships. She has since come to cherish the friendships she has made and will do anything to keep her friends safe despite having only known them for a short time.[4]

Despite the dignified bearing she maintains and the impression this may leave on others, Blaze dislikes being referred to by titles such as "Princess" or "Your Highness," and would rather be called by her own name. Blaze also holds a strong trust in the Sol Emeralds, and does not deviate from the tasks they cause her to undertake until uncovering the purpose behind them.[2]

Powers and abilities

BurstHoverIDW

Blaze using the Burst Hover to land, from Sonic the Hedgehog #4.

Blaze has the power of pyrokinesis. This allows her to control fire in different shapes and forms. Blaze can create tornadoes and beams of fire that vary in size. She can envelope herself in fire to perform moves like the Fire Boost, in wich she charges herself as a burning projectile at her opponents. She can also use the Axel Jump, in wich she jump as a mini fire tornado that damages her foes. Offense aside, Blaze can perform the Burst Hover, to create and wield fire at her palms and feet to maneuver through the air.[2]

Blaze is very acrobatic which helps her move more quickly than most and land more precise attacks.[2]

Being the guardian of the Sol Emeralds, Blaze possesses a special link to the gems, allowing her to "feel" their will and harness their power to empower herself.[2][4]

Burning Blaze

By harnessing the power of the seven Sol Emeralds, Blaze can transform into Burning Blaze. In this state, all of Blaze's abilities far surpass her normal ones. She is also able to fly without the aid of her pyrokinesis and is invulnerable to harm. Her pyrokinetic abilities are also greatly amplified.[4][5] In addition, she can use her enhanced flames for psychological purposes.[9] However, this transformation consumes a lot of energy, meaning it cannot be maintained for long.[5]

Weaknesses

Blaze suffers from acrophobia, which makes her uneasy at high altitudes. However, when needed, she is able to suppress her fear.[4]

Relationships

Blaze and Amy are very good friends and have a great mutual respect for each other. At first, Blaze was very hostile towards Amy but they soon learned to be friends. Blaze has also been taking on a more optimistic way of life due to Amy and the others.[4]

Sonic the Hedgehog

The Sonic the Hedgehog I knew was a hero. A paragon. He was as swift and free as the wind. He had no master, but fought for anyone and everyone. There was no challenge too great, no threat too dire that he wouldn't face without swagger and a smile.

— Blaze the Cat, Sonic the Hedgehog #31

Blaze and Sonic have known each other for a long time. They trust each other very well, which extends to their trust in each of their abilities. Blaze in particular considers Sonic a paragon, although she is well aware of his big ego.[3] They have great coordination with each other, allowing them to fight against their opposition with ease.

Later, Blaze even suggested she stay and help calm the flames that still raged on in the town. Later on when the Resistance had to band together to fight against Neo Metal Sonic, Blaze showed off the Sol Emeralds, to which Tangle was very impressed by.
