For the Badnik that appears in Hydrocity Zone, see Blastoid.

It teleports from floor to ceiling, leaving a shower of sparks.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Sparkle[1] (スパークル[2] Supākuru?), also known as Blastoid,[3] or Blaster,[4][5] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass produced, grenade-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Sparkle-spr

The Sparkles are small Badniks resembling grenades. They have a silver body with a pair of wide eyes, footstools, and an antenna that creates a spark line between it and the Sparkles' upper point.

Overview[]

The Sparkles make their only appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where they can only be found in Carnival Night Zone. The Sparkles are usually found in small groups within open corridors, where they can hang from the ceilings or stand on the floor, remaining stationary as well. Some also come in pairs. After a set amount of time (usually around three seconds), the Sparkles will teleport from one side of the tunnel to the other, emitting four electrical charges as they do so in a forty-five degree angle as well as emitting a lightning pulse while teleporting. The charges will rapidly slow down to a crawl after the Sparkles teleport.

The player has to move carefully when crossing the Sparkle's path. As long as they are not traveling or emitting sparks, the Sparkles can be defeated by being jumped on, or by using the Spin Dash. A Lightning Shield will protect the user from all of the Sparkle's electricity, but not from physical contact with them.

These Badniks appear to be waterproof, as the water in Carnival Night Zone does not affect them.

Powers and abilities[]

Sparkles are capable of teleporting from the ground to the ceiling by charging up their bodies with electricity, releasing two electrical charges diagonally as a side effect. However, they are completely immobile and defenseless if not given time to charge.

Trivia[]

  • In the North American manual for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Sparkle is named "Blastoid", despite another Badnik in the game going by that name.[3]
    • Additionally, several European sources instead refer to this Badnik as "Blaster", a name shared with another Badnik which was present in the data and North American manual for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but would not make its formal debut until Sonic & Knuckles.[4][5]
  • The Sparkle's name is actually derived from a romanization of "spike" and kuru, meaning "to arrive." This pun is lost in translation, however.
