— Black Rose, "The Devil Is in the Tails"

Black Rose's full profile, from Sonic Speed Simulator.

Black Rose is a doppelgänger of her mainstream counterpart. As such, she is a pink-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog with light green eyes and peach skin covering her muzzle, inner ears, and arms. She has a small black nose, triangular ears on top of her head, and no back spines. She also has two medium-length eyelashes on each side of her eyes. Additionally, her five short head quills point downwards, somewhat resembling a bob cut. She also has three spikes for bangs on her head, and a short pointy tail.

For attire, Black Rose wears a dark brown bandana that covers her left ear. She wears a dark brown vest with golden trim, and under it is a sleeveless, pinkish-white shirt with stitching. She wears a set of dark brown leather gloves paired with golden bracelets on both her wrists, complete with a red belt with a golden buckle, red and white striped shorts, and a pair of knee-high, dark brown heeled boots, which features lighter cuffs, as well as red belt straps with golden buckles, matching her belt.

History[]

Past[]

Sometime after Knuckles the Dread failed to retrieve the Devil's Lighthouse and lost his original crew, Black Rose joined Dread and form a new pirate crew alongside Batten Rouge, Sails Tails, Catfish and Froggy.

Season one[]

TNOAIT 147

Black Rose in shock after seeing Rusty Rose, from "There's No ARRGH in "Team"".

Black Rose and her crew mates first encountered Sonic on an isolated island and proceed to attack him, under the assumption he was part of Dread's former crew. Sonic eventually calmed three of them down, and they agreed to take him back to the Angel's Voyage. On the ship, Black Rose and the others have had parties for multiple days, until Sonic eventually revealed to them that he was seeking the Prism Shard. After hearing a retelling of Dread's first attempt to retrieve the Shard, Black Rose and the rest of the crew headed off to try a second time. When Rusty Rose attacks their ship, Black Rose is shocked to see someone that looks very similar to her. She fights along her friends to stop the Eggforcers. When Rusty is captured, Black Rose is still shocked by their similarities.

Season two[]

Black and Rusty Rose work together, from "Cracking Down".

Black Rose and the others are threatened by the Chaos Council when they visit No Place. When they betray Rusty Rose, Dread orders Black Rose to untie her. She obeys the captain and Rusty Rose is finally free. The two of them work together, having a small but friendly rivalry where they compete on who can take out the most Eggforcers. Like the rest of the crew, Black Rose is shocked when Dread tells her Sonic betrayed them. The conflict is eventually resolved, and the Kraken's crew work with Sonic again. Black and Rusty Rose give Sonic a hand in getting into the Council's Mothership, as they steal the Shard and are ready to leave.

Some days later, Black and Rusty Rose travel to New Yoke City, where they assist Sonic and Nine. A bit later they also go to the Boscage Maze. Both Black and Rusty Rose are impressed by Birdie and Thorn's fighting skills, as they stare in awe.

Sonic asks her about her friends, but Black Rose has no idea where they are. After finding out they are still stuck in No Place, Black Rose quickly offers her help to Sonic. Her counterparts Rusty Rose and Thorn Rose also go with them to help. Black Rose is disappointed in Dread for not coming along. They all use the Kraken to reach their destination. Nine sends Grim Birdies after them, and even creates a huge rock that blocks their way. Black Rose pilots the Kraken and is barely able to escape the rock. After a fight with the Grim Birdies, they are successful in the rescue mission. Black Rose return with her friends to the Yoke.

TDIITT 297

Black Rose becomes the captain, from "The Devil Is in the Tails".

Black Rose arrives at The Grim with the rebels hoping to assist Sonic in fighting Nine. She spends a lot of time aboard the Kraken with Rusty Rose. They have a hard time fighting Grim Birdies and Grim Rouges. When the ship starts to fail, both of them jump out of it. Rusty Rose grabs Black Rose hands and they call each other friends as they are about to fall into the ground. Thorn and Birdie arrive just in time to catch them. The three Roses unite as "sisters", and show their strength fighting some more troopers. Later on, Black Rose is having a hard time fighting Alpha Grim Amy herself. Dread surprisingly arrives to her aid. After saving her, he names Black Rose as the captain, as he puts his hat on her head.

When Nine is in his lab, Black Rose and all the others break into it, confronting him one last time. Nine has a change of heart and restores the Shatterspaces. Black Rose pilots the Kraken once again to take Shadow to the Green Hill Gateway. She catches Thorn, Sonic and Birdie when the latter has trouble flying. The three Roses say goodbye to Sonic, as Shadow is about to take him to Green Hill.

Personality[]

Like the rest of her crew, Black Rose speaks using stereotypical pirate lingo and greatly enjoys pirating. She is fond of storytelling, as she was very eager to tell the story of Dread's first attempt to retrieve the blue Prism Shard and got upset when Sails interrupted her.

Black Rose is very optimistic and cheerful, even to the point of briefly attempting to keep a positive outlook as the Angel's Voyage started to sink. Despite initially showing skepticism or hostility to others upon meeting them, such as Sonic or Rusty Rose, it wouldn't take long for her to be friendly to them after they joined her crew.

At first, Black Rose would show a great deal of loyalty to whoever her current captain was, though even this loyalty would prove to have its limits, and she'd demand that another crewman be made captain if they showed themselves to be a superior leader. However, after finding herself disappointed with Sonic's brief stint as captain and Dread's complete lack of loyalty to his crew, as well as empathizing with Rusty over their mistreatment by their former superiors, she grew out of this mindset.

Powers and abilities[]

Black Rose is capable of sword combat and utilizing cannons, and is shown to also be good at unarmed combat.

Weapons[]

Like most residents of the No Place, Black Rose uses a sword in combat.

Relationships[]

Rusty Rose[]

Initially, Rusty Rose was Black Rose's enemy. When they saw each other for the first time, the two were completely shocked after realizing how much they look alike (as the two are alternative counterparts of Amy Rose), but Rusty's antagonism towards Sonic, and the Angel's Voyage crew by extension, would quickly cement their enmity.

After Rusty was betrayed by the Chaos Council and joined the Angel's Voyage crew, however, Black Rose soon formed a bond with her, often staying by her side and treating her as a friend, much to her initial confusion. She has been known to compete with her alternate self. Sonic was keen to point out that the two are very similar, and while they initially denied this, they would eventually come to embrace it.

Thorn Rose[]

Black Rose, alongside Rusty Rose, was completely dumbfounded upon seeing yet another alternate version of herself after arriving at the Boscage Maze. Later, Black Rose and Thorn, along with Rusty, worked together to save Batten, Sails, and Catfish in No Place.

After rescuing Black Rose and Rusty from certain death during their final battle against Nine and his robot army, Thorn acknowledged the two of them as her "sisters", a sentiment that Black Rose was happy to return in kind.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese dub, Taeko Kawata gives Black Rose a deeper tone of voice compared to when she normally voices Amy.
  • Black Rose is the only dimensional counterpart of Amy in Sonic Prime who hasn't had an antagonistic role at first before redemption.
  • Along with Thorn Rose, the name "Black Rose" does not follow the naming convention for the Mandarin Chinese dubs of Sonic media where "Rose" is transcribed as 羅斯 (Luó sī), but instead adopts a literal translation of 黑玫瑰 (Hēi méi guī). The Simplified Chinese subtitles, however, retain the convention with 黑暗罗斯 (Hēi àn luó sī, lit. "Dark Rose").
