Big the Cat (ビッグ ・ザ ・キャット Biggu za Kyatto?) is a character that appears in the anime series Sonic X and its comic series published by Archie Comics. He is a large anthropomorphic cat from Sonic's world who got sent to Earth for a time due to Chaos Control. Despite his size, Big is gentle and kind but not the sharpest tool in the shed. He spends most of his time fishing and relaxing with his best friend, Froggy.
Appearance[]
Big is a very large and burly anthropomorphic cat with the majority of his body covered in purple fur with dark violet stripes running up his arms and long tail with the end frayed. His feet are covered in dark violet fur up to his ankles as well as the outer tips of his large triangular ears, on his head and around his eyes. He possesses white fur that covers his torso, upper chest and muzzle protruding outwards, and inner ears. He also has black eyes with pale yellow sclera, and a small black nose.
His preferred attire consists of tan gloves, brown sandals with silver buckles, and a brown belt with a gold buckle. He usually keeps his fishing rod with him.
History[]
Anime[]
New World Saga[]
Big was first seen sleeping by a river with Froggy during the night. However, he was awoken by the alarm from Eggman's base when Sonic attacked said base. He later noticed the glow coming from the base when Chaos Control was induced. Being caught in the glow alongside Froggy, Big's fate remained unknown for some time.[2]
Chaos Saga[]
Eventually, Big appeared in Mystic Ruins with Froggy on Earth. While sleeping in the rain, the duo was awoken by something landing nearby and went to investigate. At the site, Big found the purple Chaos Emerald. While he checked the gem out however, Froggy was forced to swallow a part of Chaos, causing Froggy to grow a tail and go crazy. Froggy then ate the Chaos Emerald that Big had found before hopping away.[3]
Going on the hunt for Froggy, Big eventually followed him to Station Square. Here, he literally bumped into Christopher Thorndyke and Cream when he fell while following Froggy, who had bumped into Cheese. As Big recovered, Froggy escaped again. Now in the company of Chris and Cream, Big told them his story over the course of a long span of time. Once Chris and Cream understood his problem, they agreed to help him look for Froggy. Along they way however, the trio encountered Chaos, whose bodily substance Big recognized as the water Froggy swallowed. Big and the others could then only observe as Chaos attacked the city, with Eggman showing up not long after to claim responsibly. Fortunately, Sonic and Knuckles soon showed up to ward off Eggman and Chaos, the latter of whom evolved from Chaos 0 into Chaos 2 during the fight with the aid of Eggman's Chaos Emerald and the Emerald that Eggman took from Cream.[3]
After that, the group took Big back to the Thorndyke Mansion, where Big explained his plight with looking for Froggy. Combined with finding the Chaos Emeralds and the shards of the Master Emerald, Sonic and his friends broke up into separate search parties. Knuckles would look for the Emerald Shards, Sonic went to meet up with Tails to look for the Chaos Emeralds, and Chris went with Big to find Froggy.[4] Figuring the best way to find Froggy was doing what he does best most of the time, Big decided to simply lie back and fish. Chris found Big's idea strange, but it paid off when Big managed to fish Froggy out of the water, only for Froggy to then be kidnapped by E-102 Gamma, sent by Eggman to find Froggy and bring him back to the Egg Carrier due to Froggy possessing both a part of Chaos and a Chaos Emerald. Following Gamma to the Egg Carrier, Big and Chris boarded the flying fortress and searched for Froggy on the various decks.[5]
Eventually, Big and Chris found Froggy in a prison bowl. Immediately after though, a sudden explosion destroyed the floor around Froggy's bowl, leaving it out of Big and Chris's reach. As the Egg Carrier then began to descend, Big freaked out until Chris calmed him down. Big then used his fishing rod to get Chris out to Froggy. Once Chris had Froggy, they and Big fled to the Egg Carrier's outer deck, only to be confronted by Eggman and Chaos 4. Grabbing Froggy, Eggman forced it to cough up the Chaos Emerald it had swallowed, and along with the Emerald he had retrieved earlier, gave them to Chaos, causing it to evolve into Chaos 6. He also gave the essence Froggy swallowed that formed Chaos' tail back to the creature by having it swallow Froggy. Big tried then to rescue Froggy, only for Chaos 6 to swallow both him and Chris too. Fortunately, Sonic and Knuckles arrived and worked together to defeat Chaos 6 and free them from the legendary beast. With the Egg Carrier then heading for a crash landing, Big and Froggy made their way into the X Tornado and managed to take off in it, with Chris and Knuckles only barely hitching a ride on it. Eventually, they crash-landed in Mystic Ruins. Having survived the crash, Big and Froggy decided to head home after Chris and Knuckles made their departure.[6] Shortly thereafter, the duo encountered Amy, who was looking for the Egg Carrier. After a brief chat, Big showed her where the Egg Carrier was.[7]
Big reappeared following Chaos' transformation into Perfect Chaos and flooding of Station Square. Finding one of the now inert Chaos Emeralds after Chaos had drained them, Big returned it to Sonic, who used the remaining positive energy in it and the other Emeralds to become Super Sonic and battle Perfect Chaos. In the end, Super Sonic purged Chaos of the anger and hatred that consumed it for centuries, allowing it leave in peace with Tikal.[8] With the crisis finally over, Big would fish with Froggy in the flooded streets of the city.[9]
Egg Moon Saga[]
Some time afterward, Big, together with Froggy, observed some Chaos Control irregularities that brought more creatures and locations from Sonic's world to Earth.[10]
Emerl Saga[]
Big was later a participant of the Chaos Emerald Martial Arts Mash-Up tournament where he went up against Ella. However, Big was too afraid of Ella to fight her and tried running away from her. Although Ella fainted when Froggy jumped towards her, Big lost the round as a result of leaving the ring while running away.[11]
Archie Comics[]
Wicked Sweet Shuttle Shenanigans[]
Big and Froggy found themselves in Paris fishing in the river, when they were interrupted by fireworks. They watched the fireworks and walked towards them to see where they were coming from. As Big remembered the fireworks, he is alerted by Froggy over to a disguised Dr. Eggman with Decoe, Bocoe and Bokkun. Big agreed with Froggy that he looked like Eggman, but ignored his suspicions as Nelson and Lindsey Thorndyke were unveiling the new space shuttle. Big watched as the space shuttle was shown to the crowd and Eggman unleashed various robots to attack the crowd for a distraction. Sonic, Tails and Amy rushed towards them as Big and Froggy overheard Eggman and realized that it was truly him. Big intervened as Eggman boasted about stealing the space shuttle. Eggman ran away after noticing Big, but is grabbed by his fishing rod and pulled back where Big knocking off his disguise. With his disguise exposed, Big and Froggy followed Eggman into the hall of mirrors with Tails, Amy, Rouge, Topaz and Eggman's robots. He was further joined by Sonic, Chris and Mr. Tanaka as they searched for Eggman in the building.[12]
As they searched, another robot smashed through the building, and Big used his fishing rod to save Froggy. With all of them trapped in the sewers under rubble, Big and Froggy introduced themselves to Rouge, Topaz, Chris and Mr. Tanaka. Sonic, Tails and Amy eventually came to their rescue, but none of them were able to lift Big out of the sewer until Froggy jumped off him and they were able to lift Big easily. Tails, Amy and Rouge rushed to stop the robot while Big freed Froggy using his fishing rod. He managed to save Froggy as the defeated robot smashed through the hall of mirrors and joined the reunion with the cast after Eggman fled.[13]
Later adventures[]
Big would later travel back to Station Square and joined Sonic and his friends for a barbeque. He spent most of the time fishing in the swimming pool, until Chuck Thorndyke directed them to his telescope. He heard Chuck telling them that a meteorite with a Chaos Emerald inside would hit the South Pole. Chris decided to make it a competition that they would race to bring back to the Chaos Emerald; to which Big was picked to be on Sonic's team with him and Tails. Big and Froggy followed their team to the South Pole to grab the Chaos Emerald within the meteorite and worked with Sonic and Tails to grab it. He helped the team by attempting to fish out the meteorite and tripping Vector over his fishing line. His team arrived back first with the help of Sonic, but were unable to find the emerald in the meteorite. Chris arrived last with Charmy and Cream and had retrieved the Chaos Emerald, and thus won the competition.[14]
Big stayed in Station Square with Froggy as Shadow from the Prime Zone arrived. He was fishing on the coastline as Sonic and Shadow confronted Eggman and Metal Sonic, where Shadow would use Chaos Control to leave with Metal Sonic.[15]
Personality[]
Big is always relaxed and easy-going.[1] However, he is rather slow and not very sharp-witted. He spends most of his days in carefree and peaceful bliss by fishing together with his best friend, Froggy, and he finds joys in the simpler things in life.[2][9] Big is not very interested in the problems of the outside world, preferring instead his quiet life back home.[6] Despite this, though, Big is very friendly and open towards others.[7]
Big is inseparable from Froggy, whom he takes with him everywhere. When Froggy ran away during the Chaos incident, Big became very sad, but also determined to friend him.[3] While he can be patient when it comes to looking for Froogy,[5] he is quick to act recklessly when he sees Froggy in danger.[6] Big also does not like violence and tries actively to avoid a fight.[11] He only resorts to violence when it is necessary for the good of his friends, especially Froggy.
As gentle and harmless as Big may appear, it is sometimes hard to get along with him due to his slow-minded ways, which come off as unnerving or uncomfortable to other people.[3] Despite how slow-minded he might be though, Big has enough understanding of technology to pilot the X Tornado (although he quickly crash-landed in it).[6]
Powers and abilities[]
Because Big actively avoids fighting, his true proves in combat is unknown. He also does not have much physical strength, as he has trouble holding up someone at Chris' weight.[6] However, he is an experienced fisherman and tracker, as demonstrated during his hunt for Froggy.[5]
Equipment[]
BIg usually carries around a long fishing rod. This rod is strong enough to carry someone as heavy as Chris at the tip without breaking or bending.[6]

- ↑ The world where Big comes from is not named in the anime and comics. The comics state, though, that Big and his friends traveled across dimensions on a parallel planet, Earth.
