Reception[]
On 5 March 2021, Schwartz received the award for "Best Animated or VFX Performance" at the Hollywood Critics Association Awards for his performance as Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog.[2]
However, some fans also feel that Ben's performance makes Sonic sound too whiny in places, and instead had wanted either Roger Craig Smith or Jaleel White to take over the role. Jaleel notes that while he didn't get a call or email from the film's creators (but was concerned over the initial CGI), he was optimistic for the film[3] and Roger approved of Schwartz's performance.[citation needed] Ben Schwartz also approved of Roger Craig Smith, and he posted it on X (Twitter at the time) on January 28, 2021[4].
Trivia[]
- He is one of two English voice actors of Sonic the Hedgehog to not also voice media-related to the video game series. The other is Jaleel White from the DiC Entertainment cartoons.
- In Sonic's crossover appearance in OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Sonic describes Eggman as "the worst" in a way that references Ben Schwartz's character of Jean-Ralphio Saperstein from Parks and Recreation.
- This reference would also be returned by Ben Schwartz himself, as a reference is made to the line yet again in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
- Ben shares his birthday with Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who voiced Tails in the games and is voicing Tails alongside Schwartz's Sonic.

Um, you know I, tapped into the character and that's what you guys heard and I did over a hundred episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog because it was a network directive to get the flow from Friday night to Saturday morning. Um, obviously the people who are making this new movie they don't need a flow. And, um, I didn't get a call, I didn't get anything, I'm not going to take it personal. I'm a little concern with the cgi. I saw it. I'm a little concern. But, you know, I'm still optimistic because I think we are all just Sonic fans in general though."
