— Ben Muttski, Sonic the Hedgehog #254

Ben "Mutt" Muttski is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian dog working as the apprentice to Charles the Hedgehog.

Muttski, from Sonic the Hedgehog #281.

Muttski is a yellow-furred mobian dog with brown spots on his back and over his left eye, brown-tipped left ear and tail, and what appear to be either brown lower legs and feet or brown socks. He has blue eyes and sandals, and wears white gloves and a red neckerchief around his neck.

As a child, Muttski had a similar appearance but he did not have a neckerchief and wore shoes similar to that of Miles "Tails" Prower with sock-like cuffs.

Early life

Ben Muttski was one of many young refugees who fled Mobotropolis with Chuck and Rosie Woodchuck when Dr. Eggman came to power. Muttski developed friendships with fellow refugees Miles "Tails" Prower and Bunnie Rabbot. When he got older, Muttski later became Uncle Chuck's research assistance.[2]

Countdown to Chaos

Muttski and Charles eventually met Sonic and Tails when they arrived in the Wood Zone to see Antoine D'Coolette, and were greatly surprised by the change in Muttski-their memories of the previous reality were of him as a Mobini. Muttski and Chuck later fell victim to one of the tremors they were investigating, falling into a deep chasm. Fortunately, the trio of Freedom Fighters came to their aid, Antoine impressing Muttski in particular by chopping through several falling logs with his sword. Collecting their remaining samples of the strange energy they had found emerging from within Mobius, Mutt and Chuck departed for Spagonia to do further research.[3]

In Spagonia, Muttski and Charles discovere their energy samples had corruptive and mutagenic properties.[4] Shortly after the Shattered World Crisis began, Muttski was contacted by Sonic who asked him to patch him through to Charles. Despite visually shaken, Muttski complied, but returned soon after with horrible news: Charles and his colleague Professor Pickle had been kidnapped by Dr. Eggman's Badniks, along with all their research.[5]

Act Two

Muttski and Chuck, from Sonic the Hedgehog #283.

Soon after the return of Charles, Muttski would listen in to a worldwide broadcast hosted by Sally Acorn and Sonic concerning how they would fix the world.[6] Muttski would later oversee the restoration of the world with Charles, notably concerned.[7]

Muttski is an excitable, happy and upbeat person, and a firm friend of the Freedom Fighters. Even in the middle of mortal danger, he can quickly shift to a cheerful mood, like when he cheered as he was being pulled out a chasm by Tails and then right after was happily impressed at Antoine's performance to save them and much like a real dog, he tends to wag his tail when happy.[3]

Uncle Chuck

Muttski is a dedicated apprentice to Uncle Chuck. He is obviously very close to his mentor, and was distraught when Chuck was taken captive.[5]

  • It is possible that Muttski's name may be based on Ben Hurst's name, who was the main writer of the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series, from which Muttski originated.
