Ben Bates is an American comic artist. He used to contribute to the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. Currently, he is contributing to the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing.

History[]

Outside of Sonic, Bates' work can also be seen in the Mega Man and the New Crusaders comics, the former being Archie-owned, and the latter being from Archie's Red Circle imprint. Outside of Archie Comics he has done pencils for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and My Little Pony for IDW Publishing along with pencils for Teen Titans Go and inks for Scribbenauts Unmasked: A Crisis Of Imagination for DC Comics.

Bates has also worked in animation, having served as a storyboard artist at Marvel Animation, primarily on Avengers Assemble. He later worked at Cartoon Network Studios as a character and prop designer for the show OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes!. For that show, he created the model sheets for Sonic and Tails in the "Let's Meet Sonic" crossover episode.[1]

  • Bates had decided in 2012 to stop drawing interior artwork for the Sonic the Hedgehog series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics as he wanted to ink the pages himself but was not permitted to.[2]
